Thanks to Admiral DadMan for this post.

When you use Historical Start, there are no orders to enter, so, nothing to do. Here's what should happen

Japan Player loads Scenario 15.
Enter Password when prompted for it.
The game will then go to the Save Game Menu (because it has already issued the first turn "Historical" instructions).
Choose a save game slot (for example, 003), click on it to select.
Click the "save" button at the bottom of the screen.
When it's done saving, click "Exit" to the bottom right.
Send the save game file (witp003.pws) to your Allied buddy.

Allied player chooses "Load Saved" game.
Then choose the same game file (003), and then the big select saved game button
Enter Password when prompted.
The game will then go to the Save Game Menu (because it has already issued the first turn "Historical" instructions).
Save game to the same slot as loaded from (003).
Click the "save" button at the bottom of the screen.
When it's done saving, click "Exit" to the bottom right.
Allied player sends the same file (witp003.pws) back

Japan player loads the save game file (003) enters password, the game will generate the first turn, and you're off!

The only difference now is when you're each done entering orders, you use the "e" key or "end turn" icon.

Japan player loads 003 file only for both resolution and entering orders.
Japan player sends turn save file (witp003.pws) and combat save replay file (witp001.wps)
Allied player loads 001 file to view results and then 003 file to enter orders
Allied player sends turn save file (witp003.pws) only

(one extra tidbit)

As the Allied player, make sure your run the witp001.pws file *first* as it creates the reports that you view inside the game. If you have run some other turn and jump right into the witp003.pws save file, the reports will be from that other turn that was last run. Loading the save does not create these reports for the Allied player.

The diffrence is you will get the option to make your first turn moves. It will not go directly to the save.

Kid,

What happens on another scenario (other than 15, say for example 16) where
historical start is on. Does the computer just go ahead and run the first turn (which in regards to Sc 15 is the second turn). I guess what I'm getting at what effect does historical start have regarding pbem games of Sc's other than 15 ?

If I remember correctly, the AI will do the first turn.

Saves files are generally about 1.5 Meg per ... this generally means two emails for Japan player need to be sent, one with the turn, the other with the replay unless you and your partner have a better then normal email service.

Do you recommend the "Historical First Turn" option for scenario 3, the 14-day Coral Sea scenario?

We are trying to play scenario 003 with our games at patch level 1.795. We were not prompted to enter a password at the begining of the scenario. What are we doing wrong?

Is the password set by Japan or do i just make one up. The reason why I ask is that when I have the password screen up and try to enter a password it just jumps back to the Main Menu Screen. I dont know what the PW is... Thought I just needed to make on up for myself... Not sure what I am doing wrong...

No, password are different for both the japanese and the allies player. Every player chose his own. There something wrong with your game. As Allies, the game should ask for player TWO password.
Maybe jap player sends you the wrong file.

Bye

Jelloflyer,

your opponed did bot end his turn, he saved it instead. The game thinks it is still the Japanese turn, so it asks for your opponents password. The Japanese player must "end turn", not "save".

Only the Japan player sends BOTH the game file and the combat replay (001). The ALlied player only needs to send the game file. Is this right? Thanks.

That's right. Some people also like to have the various txt files for the reports sent as well

Yes, the Combatreport.txt especially - this is to make sure you are not bitten by the "replay bug"...

Also, as allied, if you get the combat report, often you can go directly to the save game and skip the (sometimes tedious) combat replay. It allows for faster turnover of games.

Wow, four years in and no one has corrected the typo? That should be witp001.pws, shouldn't it?

Loving the game so far!

Yes funny how time flys. I was just looking at my first post as WitP Beta Test Coordinator, that was 6 years ago and I'm still at it.

As allies, you should recieve AS A MINIMUM from the Japanese player, 2 files...the witp001.pws and the witp(save#).pws, where (save#) is the number you and your opponent agreed to save the game.

Move both of these to your C:\Matrix\Witp\Saves directory (if you use the default path). Start the game and load 001, combat save. Watch the action. It should automatically create the combat file, the operation file, and the intel file. After it is done, the game should go the main menu screen. Load the save number you and your opponent agreed to save the game too. Give your orders....execute the turn....send the witp(save#).pws to your opponent.

It is ideal for the Japanese player to send you the "combatreport.txt" file. Compare the one he sends you to the one that is created (it can be found in the Saves directory). If they look the same, you do not have a problem. If they look different, even a little bit, then you have been hit with the sync bug and what you see on the 001, combat save is not 100% correct. Usually, the sync bug works itself out after a turn or so, but could return at any time.

OK, I'm short on coffee this morning , so I apologize in advance for my slowness.

I'm getting ready to Take The Plunge

I clear my entire Saved Games directory ( just to be safe, I know it's not neccesary).

I take the 2 files my Japanese opponent sends me, the witp001.pws and the witp003.pws files (from the example), and copy them into the C:\Matrix\Witp\Saves directory.

I start WITP, select PBEM, select load game, & load witp001.pws, enter password, watch the action.

Game goes to main menu.

Load witp003.pws , password, give orders, (and I get confused here) hit the little red button & watch my turn execute?

Save my executed turn to witp003.pws , and email it to my Japanese opponent?

Gawd help me, if I have this correct (or close) I may need to go make a plea here for a PBEM.
