A coupla questions about objectives...

Does setting an objective only benefit amphibious assaults? Suppose I want to march overland from Port Moresby to Buna. Does it do any good to set Buna as a Future objective?

How about a unit I want to leave in Port Moresby. Does it do any good to set PM as an objective for the unit even though it's already there?

(1) I believe preplanning speeds overland travel rate. (2) I believe having a destination set to current base will increase defense value of the unit at that base.

Not sure about that, but planning does benefit all combat in the objective hex, whether as attacker or defender. A "nearby" HQ unit (whatever that means) having planned that objective will also help - p 147 in the printed manual.

The objective tab does provide a combat bonus for an attacker. It is particularily evident for the defender if he is defending a base to which he has fully "prepared" for.

I've always wondered if objective planning only has effect on the objective. In other words if I set an objective, wait till my planning pts get to 100, set off by road to get there, and then meet the enemy one hex short of my objective. Do I get any bonus at all for fighting in the vicinity of the objective or does it only apply if I'm on the objective.

Until and unless someone in the know says otherwise, I would assume that units get no bonus for being "near" their objective.

I think you're right about that, dtravel.

One other thing. I wish you could set open country hexes as objectives. There are several natural defensive positions (the hex NE of Rangoon, for example) that it would be nice to augment.

you only get the bonus at the base hex you are planning for.

sorry

Neither side gets a bonus. So look at it as a straight up dogfight. HQ's are your only option for a combat bonus outside of a base hex.

Thats what I thought. Would be useful to be able to set non bases as objectives.

That option would really help the Chinese Army. It's probably too much to ask for though.

It would be a real pain keeping track of which units planned for what hex. Let's see was that 63,42 or was it 42, 63.
