I've been completely driven out of that area. It is hard enough getting a trickle of supply in. Suicide to base anything on NG or conduct naval operations in the area. the two months of bombing made the port and the airfields unuseable. Any air that was based in the area was driven back by lack of supply, constantly destroyed airfields and severe damage to park aircraft. I couldn't fly cap large enough to be even close to competitive.

I was wondering when that shoe would drop.

SITUATION REPORT: 5-27-43

EASTERN NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN: FALL OF PORT MORESBY

68,000 combatant troops made it ashore by today and launched a devastating shock attack on the demoralized defenders of Port Moresby. 17,000 remnants of the IJA were sent retreating towards Buna and Port Moresby is back in Allied hands since the dark early days of the war in December 1941. The port and airfield there are in shambles but massive numbers of seabees and support troops continue to unload.

The cost was heavy....over 20 MSW, DD, LCT,LCI LST were lost or will soon sink but capturing Port Moresby was the necessary 1st step in unhinging the entie Japanese position in SE New Guinea.

With the capture of Guadalcanal the Allies have pulled within 3000 points of the Japanese. Air to air losses are almost even and ship losses are nearly 2:1 in the Allies favor.

EASTERN NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN: INVASION OF BUNA

Under the cover of 10 BBs and hundreds of carrier and land based aircraft, 32,000 Allied troops wade ashore at Buna and encounter light resistance. The order is given for an all-out shock attack for tomorrow. The Allies must capture Buna before the Japanese troops retreating from Port Moresby arrive.

SITUATION REPORT: 6-16-43

EASTERN NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN: BUNA IS SECURED

The shock attack at Buna is very effective...not only do the Allies capture the base but the Japanese are forced to retreat to Dobodura. Now over 30,000 Japanese are cut off in the jungles of New Guinea.

SOLOMONS CAMPAIGN:

Over 20 MSWs work around the clock to open the sea lanes to Lunga. Transport TFs with seabees are on their way to make Lunga'a airfield operational ASAP.

Congrats on a gutsy move . . . I would have bet that it would take you at least two more turns to capture the base.

Banzai!!

Happiness is sneaking a carrier TF so far into enemy waters and hitting the target. Admittedly not a lot of damage. But it was good for morale.

Lol....I almost forgot that Lunga was in a war zone. Guess I cant be so complacent now. The Japanese CVs are becoming a nuisance. The USN may need to go hunting after them when the current campaigns are complete.

Capt Harlock...thanx for your comments. I had to take Buna immediately to prevent it from being reinforced by the 24,000 troops that were retreating across the Owen Stanley Mountains from Port Moresby. The Japanese commander informed me that I just barely beat them too!

The turns got out of sequence with the Japanese CV strike. I need to go back one turn and then catch up.

SITUATION REPORT: 6-21-43

SOLOMONS CAMPAIGN: 6-21-43

IJN CVs sneak in close to Lunga to pound the Allied transport fleet there. The trick now will be for them to make good their escape. The Allies detached 4 CVs and 5 CVLs that were covering their transport TFs and sent them at full speed to attempt engagement with the IJN. The IJN CVs were last spotted 240 mi NE of Lunga and the seas there are now covered by hundreds of heavy and medium bombers.

Lunga itself now has over 100 Corsairs and P-38s and 50 SBDs.

There really ought to be a laughing like a maniac emoticon, but since there isn't.... His carriers found me, his bombers found me, but I don't know what his fighters were doing....

I may have to offer a do-over if he forgot to take his fighters off covering a specific TF... I Just hope they were missing for a good reason. This doesn't do any permanent damage to the Allies, just sets them back a bit while they repair and load more air groups. Me... I lost some of my best, and I'm not home yet.

Knowing the condition Munda was in when I got kicked out, I would be surprised if you had the base in running order (no runway or service damage) and enough supply to fly out all 200 bombers.

Carriers? Ummm, not enough sortie points? I don't know how those are allocated, but is it possible your bombers used the sortie points and left the fighters grounded?

Too many air groups per deck?

I obviously can't see what is going on on your side, but something of this magnitude would have been seen before....

Actually I have had Munda for over 2 months now and have flown 1000s of sorties....you are thinking of Lunga. Anyway I thought Id put up some typical screenies of my CVs so you can see what was going on:

Hi,

Great AAR guys. I've been catching up on the last months action yesterday and today.

I think there are two reasons for what happened in your carrier battle.

If number of aircraft aboard a carrier exceeds 115% of the capacity only Transfer Missions can be flown according to the manual, page 190, last 5 lines.
Since you have 36 ACs on Belleau Wood that makes the load 120%.

The second one is that according to the flow of Air Ops a unit will join a strike as escort if it doesn't have a different target set. I noticed that your Wildcats on Belleau Wood has PM as target.

Rather unrealistic behaviour but that's the game.

That looks like it could explain Belleau Wood. Could it be the same for the other carriers involved?

Regards
BPRE

Agree with BPRE about Belleau Wood's cap. They are pointed at PM and that's where they went or wanted to go. You have to clear that and check your other carriers.

Yeah, I was thinking of Lunga instead of Munda, same issue however, make sure your fighters aren't set to a specific destination.

I was also wondering, Why do you have your Wildcats set to 30,000 feet?

The CV is currently overloaded the turn after the strike as AC flew there from other CVs due to damage. All CVs had normal AC complement before the battle. The bombers all flew so obviously the CVs could not have been overloaded. I included that last screenie in order to show that sufficient carrier ops were left. The question is about the fighters. The more important question is .....why did only 3 AC out of over 120 fly CAP?

SITUATION REPORT: 6-22-43

SOLOMONS CAMPAIGN: BATTLE OF THE NORTHERN SOLOMONS

The 5th major carrier vs carrier battle of the war ended disasterously for the Allies as none of their CAP flew and CV Wasp and 3 CVLs were damaged....some heavily. The Fighter Direction officers on all involved carriers were relieved of duty immediately. Fresh Corsair squadrons were flown in to replace the battered airgroups and LRCAP of P-38Gs from Munda were ordered. The CV TFs will now attempt to limp back to port under threat of futher strikes from KB and land based air. Hopefully the CAP will fly tomorrow.

CV Wasp will probably be out of the war for at least 6 months. At least 2 of the IJN CVs were damaged in the exchange.

EASTERN NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN:

Invasion forces assembled at the SE tip of New Guinea in preparation for the upcoming assault.

SITUATION REPORT: 6-23-43

SOLOMONS CAMPAIGN: GUADALCANAL SECURED

The last IJA remnants were mopped up today in Lunga. Guadalcanal is finally 100% secured after 2 months of fighting.

The damaged CV Wasp and CVLs continued to withdraw towards Munda. The Japanese threw all their naval and land based air available in theatre at them. The British CVs reinforced with 2 Corsair squadrons stood by their damaged American brothers and helped resist the awesome Japanese onslaught.....over 100 Japanese AC were shot down with no further hits scored on the USN carriers.

BPRE and Gray Company....thanx for your comments. Belphegor and I retested the turn several times and yes I blew it by having a destination set for my fighters...it cancelled out the CAP orders.

And Gray Company...I typically have my CAP at high altitudes to take advantage of the US fighter strengths....if the game is modeled correctly, the Allied fighters should be able to dive on attacking AC and run away...ie not try to turn and manuever with them. Use gravity and keep their speed up. I routinely do sweeps with P-38s at 35,000 ft and they seem to be VERY deadly.
