This is 2nd AAR between moses and Tohat with a bit of role reversal, tophat is the <Jap imperialist>while moses is that <decadent westerner>.Scenario 15

House rules, good question actually....no taking blind advantage of the japanese 1st turn movement bonus.
Only 1 port attack on turn #1 and thats at PH!!
No attacking Chinese forces unless they start the game in the hex with you or move into a jap hex. This policy stays in effect untill Singapore Falls for me.....so moses rush more boys in there!
I don't know what we are doing about the 2nd Marines anymore, thought 1.3 was going to address this with giving the Div more starting disruption? At this point I say just use it,get it out there so i can get at it!

Starting Goal:
Economic Independence and Security consistant with National Pride. Don't everyone scratch their head at once now, this is just my personal guideline spelledout so people who bother to read this have an idea of what i'm trying to achieve. And if anyone thinks or cares to comment on a particularly boneheaded move i make be sure to hit me over the head with how I just blew my chance at my goal!

In startingoff as the Japanese I did the following to my Production:

All Claude production was switched to A6m2 Zero
All Nate production also switched to Zero's
All Nell production switched to G4M1 Betty
I need to check and see if I switch my Jake production to Kates or not.
I did also increase Kate production.

Engines:
All Nissan to Nakajima
Hitachi to Nakajima
Tokyo I kept producing Ishikawajima
All Kawasaki production was halted and shifted to Nakajima the exception to this was maizura<which kept kawasaki production and should meet my needs on this engine.>

I did not expand vehicle or armament industry as of yet.

I also on turn #1 had not come to a conclusion about what ship construction policy to follow. What hulls to halt and what hulls to accelerate, which leaves me now with a production point deficit. To solve this problem, which was again brought home to me by reading Tanaka's and guv's threads on ship production. Also irrelevant pointedout in stark terms the problem the jap player finds himself in early on regarding being short of production points for his Naval shipbuilding.
I have decided at my next opportunity, that would be turn#3 to "Halt" work on the Shinano and use the production points saved to wipeout my deficit and to accelorate some other hulls. Now my reasons for going with halting work on Shinano were the following:
Ship is sucking 180 naval production points into a black hole.
I won't see this ship untill the war will have been decided, late 44' or early 45' depending on where I find the points to pay for her.
The ship only is listed at 60 a/c capacity and for the points just doesn't seem economical.
Halting production on this ship i'll probably never see anyway solves a host of production problems and gives me options. Its a No-brainer,we halt production.

Ok there are my basic changes to Industry before the game begins.....please feel free to comment or give advice at anytime. Also for all you prospective jap players out there read:
1) accelerated ship thread by guv
2) Why does no one talk about what they do with production/research.
3) Zen and the art of japanese production.

Now as to my opening move....i'm ofcourse blasting PH.

Wake Island is going to be assaulted as well,i don't want PBY's coming out of there and spying on my dispositions. Conversely i do want to have my flyingboats based out of there spying on the U'S fleet. Also denying Wake as a sub base or refueling stop is important in my estimation.

Malaya:
Sealoff the peninsula from burma, then march to singapore takingon all comers. take that "big stick policy" and just beat the Brits,Auzzies,Indian and commenwealth troops over the head with it till i reach water.

Borneo:
Isolate it from allied airbases before taking the oil&resource facilities to minimize damage from bombing.

PI:
Get this cesspool of Allied troublemakers cleanedup and use the PI bases as staging points dig into the SRA and NG.

Guam;
pick it off with light forces fast.

I scewedup my air attacks.......i had my altitude set too high,a number of bombers should of been at 7,000 ft not 15,000 to get some better accuracy.
Also in changing my orders around i seem to have neglected CAP over my Malaya invasion forces!!
Not all my invasion forces made it to the beach this turn, this will become apparent over the next turn or so.

quote:

[/quoteSo I choose to speed up the CVL Shoho at 135 points. 45 normal points/day * 3 = 135 points
Not quite. You already paid 45 of the 135 points for Shoho (the part for "normal" construction) as part of the original 1260 points.

quote:

That leaves me with 144 points left. So I choose to speed up the Unyo at 40 normal points/day*3=120 points. 144-120= 24 points. Not much else you can do with 24 points.
Except Unyo, a CVE, is a part of the merchant ship construction program. You cannot affect her here (but if you could, your calculation would have been faulty for the same reason as for Shoho; you already accounted for the points for "normal" construction).

So, to pick up your example where you went astray:

180+185 = 365 points
365 - 86 = 279 points left

Less 90 to accelerate Shoho, leaves you with 189 to play with. You could even reinstate Musashi...

]

Thanks Tanaka and irrelevant i was making the same counting error....so I'm stopping Shinano and speedingup shoho first,i'll have to take a look :
180 pts for stoping Shinano - 86 points my current deficit = 94 points left.
Accelerate shoho = 90 points,as I have already invested 45 points,so i have 4 points leftover.

Ok,
upon further thought i'm going in more for a longview on shipbuilding, accelerating the Shoho just doesn't give me enough benefit for resources allocated.

No major surprises yet however my inattention to Air-ops details needs to be nipped in the bud before disaster falls.

I thought I would hold at Wake so I left my fighters there set on navel attack. They failed to attack and TOPHAT had another ground unit in reserve. So the fighters are dead.

PH must be disappointing for Japan. Nothing sunk but a single PT in two days of bombing. My fighters had a pretty good day as only 18 zero's showed up at PH. I actually got 10 bombers in air-to-air. Glad I didn't stand down my decimated fighters on turn one. I like to lay some minefields early around PH to give the JP one more thing to worry about. He attacked my DM with 6 kates (about right) and 73 fighters!! Better yet my DM survived with moderate damage.

Every ship in the JP navy appears to be attacking the PI. He's got good ASW and air coverage and he's bombarding everything in sight. All I can do is wait for him to run out of ammo. He is landing a lot of troops over the beach. I usually take a beach or two and then land the bulk of forces. He's taking a lot of disruption casualties that could have been avoided by delaying for a day or so. We'll see if getting the troops deployed quickly was worth the extra losses.

Yes indeed I'm taking losses, however alot of those in the reports are inflated and i want those boys off the ships ASAP! Cleaningout the nest of vipers in the PI is worth loosing afew boys. Also the Allies get 2 more PI Infantry Divs on Bataan over the next several weeks and I'd rather see about finnishing this business before that.

PH was a disappointment yes but damaging alot of ships, straining PH's ability to repair and running down your supplies doing the repairs makes me happy. Send those cripples off to the westcoast and the repair facilities there, rush some supply convoys to PH!

This was abit of bother since my carrier covering force went off for refueling, however i do see where they were and my complacent attitude has been smacked away.

Now HongKong is still holding on:

Ground combat at Hong Kong

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 33344 troops, 314 guns, 15 vehicles

Defending force 12000 troops, 74 guns, 4 vehicles

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 3

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 3)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 3

Japanese ground losses:
111 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Vehicles lost 1

Allied ground losses:
271 casualties reported
Guns lost 8
Vehicles lost 1

I do think in the next 2 days this city will fall but we shall see.

Still have to get to Clark on the main island yet.

No great force seems to be in Malaya. The PI invasion force seems rather small. No invasion activity anywhere else. So far I have positively ID'd 4 divisions and I think I see one in Burma and Songria. Where are the other divisions????

Pearl Harbor has been placed back on alert. Went back and checked Russian bases to make sure they were digging in. He's not attacking in china. We shall see.

Hong Kong is hanging on well. I think there is a lot of luck involved. I think you did the attack exactly like I did in our other game. For me it fell on the first attack. Now you've attacked twice and its still standing firm.

My British BB force is a little bummed. For the risk they took the payoff of one CL sunk is a little weak.

dec 19th 41'

Ahh,well the master plan has had afew pitfalls but such is life.

PI:
Luzon......48th Div is still fighting ashore at San Mercelino vs 21 PI and a baseforce.

Ground combat at San Marcelino

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 24742 troops, 390 guns, 1 vehicles

Defending force 3781 troops, 22 guns, 0 vehicles

Allied ground losses:
101 casualties reported
Guns lost 4

This is the 3rd turn he's had some reasonable losses and the plan is to have him out by Dec 21st.

At Tuguegaro same problem and same schedule to oust the PI inf.......

Ground combat at Tuguegarao

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 20521 troops, 244 guns, 7 vehicles

Defending force 4607 troops, 44 guns, 2 vehicles

Allied ground losses:
5 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

We'll see if I can clear him as fast as I'd like to..........

Mindanao:

Daveo is now a secure Fleet and airbase we are planning to make good use of it to command the surrounding sealanes.

Cagayan in the north is also controled and will be a nice northern base to help cleanup that mess of island bastions in the PI SEA!

DEI:
Haven't landed there yet............

China:
Now that HongKong has fallen we are moving forces into position to attack in the North,Center and south.

I love defending in those PI mountain hexes. About time you attcaked in China. Giving me a two week grace period makes it to easy on China although perhaps a bit more historical. You're going to have a real fight on your hands now.

Why are you continuing to produce the Ishikawajima engine? There is no airframe that uses it in the game. What will you do about Aichi's and when so you can get the Judy? There is some cheap expansion of industry that will cost you nothing for the armaments and vehicles that start at 0 which is a "free" upgrade of the factory. I would also stop RD on the Dinah III KAI and a few late war fighters to something more usable which could also streamline the production system.

Also.....you can do some serious damage in China to help your war effort if you plan it well as well as capture industry and resources.

There is an easy pickings base next to Bali with resources as well as a first turn Lingayen option.

The later war subs (RO and the I-360 and above with all those transport points) could be turned off when they start to suck up shipbuilding points.

I would turn off about half of the merchant shipyards and even convert many of the smaller ones to naval shipyards.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Well it makes the game more historical and more of a challenge in China, worrynot the boys are on the move. Not everything needs to be won in December 41'. I remember well some earlier AAR's where the chinese massed forces and got themselves slaughtered for their trouble.

Already in the works but you can't halt construction of those untill they sttart to burn points...checkout irrelevants spreadsheet on naval production.

not even considering doing this! At this time there are more merchant ship points created than used but later in the war this is reversed. i'm accelerating some hulls right now..........CS,CVE and msw all going to my ASW effort.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/24/41

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 122 encounters mine field at Hong Kong (43,42)

Japanese Ships
MSW Kyo Maru #1, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Himejima Maru
MSW Hakata Maru #7
MSW Choun Maru #8 So much for being able to clear a harbor.......to compound the disaster the ship sank later in the day!

Then there was actual proof that the Allies had subs out at sea! How'd i findout you might ask,by sending an unescorted group of fast transportships! works everytime it does!

Sub attack at 29,55

Japanese Ships
AP Midori Maru, Shell hits 5, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS KXV

Then ofcourse we had the daring daylight PT-boat raid on Viggan!

Day Time Surface Combat, near Vigan at 44,49

Japanese Ships
DD Yamagumo, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
APD APD-1
APD APD-2, Shell hits 5
DD Chidori
DD Manazuru
DD Hatsukari
DD Tomozuru
MSW W.11
MSW W.12
PG Aso Maru
PG Kamitsu Maru
PC Ch 4
PC Ch 5
PC Ch 6
PC Ch 10
PC Ch 11
PC Ch 12
AP Arizana Maru
AP Hayo Maru
AP Kumakawa Maru

Allied Ships
PT PT-34, Shell hits 12, and is sunk
PT PT-35, Shell hits 18, and is sunk
PT PT-41, Shell hits 1, and is sunk

Unfortunatly a good DD took a torp in her side, but with any luck the Pt threat is fairlywell contained now 2 other boats were sunk before and only 1 undamaged is motoring about.

More troops have landed in the PI and i'm shooting for Jan 15th as a cleanup date here on Luzon. Mindanao has me entrenched at Daveo and cagayan already i just need to track his division and 2 base units down now.

Malaya:
Well I'm still at Alor Star slugging it out:

Ground combat at Alor Star

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 19342 troops, 283 guns, 7 vehicles

Defending force 15355 troops, 103 guns, 0 vehicles

Allied ground losses:
24 casualties reported

his response:

Ground combat at Alor Star

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 8903 troops, 79 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 44746 troops, 573 guns, 96 vehicles

Despite this I'm still optimistic about Malaya,it's simply not being reflected on the battlefield yet.

DEC 25th thru 26th:

Alot of jockying for position was done on the 25th and resting of airunits.

On the 26th things started to "happen" again:

In the DEI a sub hunter group smacked me around:

Sub attack at 21,58

Japanese Ships
SS I-156, hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
DD Banckert
DD Paul Jones

While on the other side of the Ocean:

ASW attack at 118,64

Japanese Ships
SS I-15

Allied Ships
DD Ward
DD Downes
DD Selfridge
DMS Wasmuth
DMS Elliot
MSW Bobolink
DD Fox
DD Brooks
DD Gilmer

A SearsTower ASW stack doesn't touch me while 2 tin cans walk depth charges up my deck...lol.....is ASW combat off or was it bad luck in shallow water? I'll keep an eye on it!

Another of my sub attacks:

Sub attack at 23,51

Japanese Ships
SS I-158

Allied Ships
AK Boelongan

No joy here but atleast the Transport didn't depthcharge me!!!!

Ahh atlast abit more success:

Sub attack at 42,52

Japanese Ships
SS I-124

Allied Ships
AO Trinity, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

My covering/Bombardment Force off of Mersing malaya......I screwedup the aircover, the damn Army pukes never tookoff! And look what happens:

Day Air attack on TF at 24,49

Allied aircraft
Swordfish x 4
Vildebeest IV x 21
Blenheim I x 6
Blenheim IV x 6
P-40E Warhawk x 15

Allied aircraft losses
Swordfish: 3 damaged
Vildebeest IV: 9 damaged
Blenheim I: 4 damaged
Blenheim IV: 3 damaged

Japanese Ships
BB Kongo
BB Haruna, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x Blenheim IV bombing at 6000 feet
4 x Vildebeest IV launching torpedoes at 200 feet
1 x Vildebeest IV launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x Swordfish launching torpedoes at 200 feet
2 x Blenheim I bombing at 6000 feet
4 x Blenheim IV bombing at 6000 feet
4 x Vildebeest IV launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x Vildebeest IV launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x Vildebeest IV launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x Vildebeest IV launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x Blenheim I bombing at 6000 feet

Some drunk Kangeroo herder drops a Torp and gets nothing but "MAGAZINE"...and so goes Haruna. <mybe Mag Hits are too easy>

The Imperial Army is now ashore just North of Singapore and Intends to stay. Australians have met us on the Beach and the fight is on! We shall see what can be made of this opportunity on land.As it is we certainly need to work on the Allied Airforce in the area!!!!!

I saw the ships coming last turn and have guessed Mersing. Troops are enroute to this location already. This could be an interesting battle. Lucking out with that torpedo hit is sweet. I havn't run the turn yet, have you actually landed yet?
