Burma Front

Southwest Pacific Front

-7/11: The allies on Darwin prepare to assault the japanese defenses in Ceram island (Operation Dagger).
-7/17: Dagger operation, day one. The allies disembark over Bulla. The japanese launch heavy air attacks with medium bombers from Amboina and Macassar bases and the CVEs Natoma Bay and Kitkun Bay are damaged.
-7/17: A few hours after the start of Dagger operation, the japanese navy forces at DEI (RADM Tanaka), based at Soerbaja, leaves that port with the battleships Fuso, Yamashiro and Hyuga, the heavy cruisers Takao, Haguro, Nachi and Mikuma, light cruisers Tama, Oi and Kiso, and the destroyers Akatsuki, Hibiki, Usugumo, Hatsuyuki, Yayoi, Satsuki, Okikaze, Numakaze and Fuyo. Your objective is catch the allied transport forces near Ceram Island.
-7/19: Dagger operation, day three. The allies disembark over Amboina. This time the japanese bombers sunk a LCI.
-7/19: The submarine Billfish locate the Tanaka forces in Java Sea. At once, the allies leaves Darwin with the battleships Richelieu, Idaho and New Mexico, the cruiser Vincennes, the light cruisers Achilles, Adelaide, Boise and Dragon and five destroyers.
-7/21: The allies notice the task force from Darwin do not reach Amboina beachead in time and give the order to retire the amphibious groups to evade the japanese trap. RADM Tanaka make a recon of Amboina aproaches but no one allied ship is trapped. However, the BB Yamashiro is torpedoed by a TBM from CVE Liscome Bay. Tanaka decide retire your ships to refuel and repair in Balikpapan base.
-7/22: The 6th AUS INF DIV take Amboina. The japanese defense was only around 4.000 men from IJN support units.
-7/22: The main allied naval forces remain at anchor near Kai island waiting recon news of Tanaka movements.
-7/25: The 5th AUS Tank Bn. take Bulla without fighting. The damaged allied ships retire to Darwin.
-7/26: After refuel your ships and send the damaged BB Yamashiro with a short escort to Soerbaja, RADM Tanaka leaves again Balikpapan to catch the allied shipping south of Ceram.
-7/30: The Sparrow bn lauch a small amphibious operation against the undefended Sorong base.

South/Central Pacific Front

-7/2: VADM Smith leaves Noumea with 8 battleships, four heavy cruisers, three light cruisers and ten destroyers to bombard japanese defensive positions around Lunga.
-7/6: The american bombard task force inflict heavy damage over the japanese defenses on Lunga. 3.300 japanese casualties. Only the DD Callaghan was hit by some shells.
-7/7: VADM Smith retire your ships undamaged to Tarawa to refuel. The second target of your force is now Kwajalein, another japanese heavy resistence point.
-7/8: The 37th USA INF DIV avance to Rabaul outskirts after a long march from Gasmata.
-7/14: VADM Smith reach Kwajalein at night and comence the bombarment, this time the american admiral decide use the destroyers also in the attack. The consequence is the sinking of the destroyers Cowell, Bennett, Anthony and Franks by the heavy coastal gunfire. Another four destroyers get heavy damage.
-7/14: The 1st USMC Division take the Lunga airstrip.
-7/21: The allies disembark the 27th USA INF DIV over Kwajalein. The japanese resistence was stiff and the allied losses are heavy.
-7/23: The allies reforced the Kwajalein invasion with the 77th USA INF Div.
-7/26: The Kwajalein atoll is secured by USA forces.

Burma Front

-8/2: Huge japanese air attack against Andaman Is. The british shot down 76 planes in this total japanese failure. The damage on base was minimal.

Southwest Pacific Front

-8/1: Heavy japanese air attacks against the allied shipping around Sorong (New Guinea). However, the allied CAP shot down seven and no one ship is damaged.
-8/2: Sorong night action:RADM Tanaka surprise the allied transport and cover group and win a minor victory. The allies lost the CA Chester, the destroyers Phelps and Bagley and a MSW. The nipons only suffer minor damage.
-8/5: The Sparrow Bn take Sorong base. The japanese 2nd Sasebo SNLF withdrawn to Hollandia.
-8/23: The 5th AUS INF DIV reach Koepang after a hard march from Dili.
-8/25: A surface task force from Darwin bombard Koepang with the battleships Richelieu and Idaho, four heavy cruisers, six light cruisers and eleven destroyers.
-8/25: The japanese start a night air campaign with the new plane Ki-102a in the Burma theatre. The first target is the Jamshedpur air base. The attackers return without losses but the damage is very light, some Liberator VIs destroyed on land.

South/Central Pacific Front

-8/15: The RADM McCain leaves Lunga port with the carriers Saratoga, Intrepid, Benington and Ticonderoga, the light carriers Princeton, Cowpens, Monterey, Cabot, Bataan and San Jacinto, two battleships, three cruisers and ten destroyers to launch heavy air attacks against the japanese bases on Truk and Rabaul.
-8/17: The 188th USA Glider Bn take Buka after a light fighting.

-8/20: The last japanese defenders near Lunga (8.000 troops from 16th JAP INF DIV) are anihilated.
-8/21: The 187th USA Glider Bn take Kavieng after a shot fighting.
-8/21: The american carrier group near Truk launch a huge air attack against the japanese base. 115 dive bombers, 126 level bombers and 148 fighters almost destroy Truk. 46 japanese planes are destroyed, one submarine is sunk and many merchants and transports are damaged.
-8/23: Another air attack over Truk. In the port are sunk another submarine, two minelayers and some merchants.
-8/25: The last 3.000 japanese defenders over Kwajalein are destroyed.

Burma Front

-9/5: New allied defeat in front Calcutta. The british suffer more than 5.000 casualties, the japanese only 800 and the offensive is again stopped.
-9/26: The british decide take Tavoy in a surprise amphibious operation from Trimcomalee. 53 transports leave that port escorted by the carriers Indomitable, Illustrous, Battler, Begum and Shah, three battleships, two battlecruisers, eight cruisers and eight destroyers.

Southwest Pacific Front

-9/1:The 188th USA Glider Rgt. take Arawe (New Britain) without fight after a shot trip from Buin.
-9/8: Heavy air attack over Balikpapan oil industries by Superfortress based at Darwin. 40% production is stopped.
-9/17: The 1st USMC Division disembark over Finshaffen (New Guinea) and take the base without fight. The allies reforced the position with the 637th US Tank Bn.

South/Central Pacific Front

-9/2: American carrier planes sunk two japanese merchants near Ponape.
-9/2: The 3rd and 4th USMC Divisions embark in Lunga. Your objective is Rabaul. The japanese air power in the zone is almost destroyed but the amphibious group will be escorted by the RADM McCain with four fast carriers and three light carriers.
-9/3: The battleships Maryland, Colorado, California, Nevada, Mississippi, Washington, Indiana, Massachusets, Alabama, Iowa and New Jersey, besides eight cruisers and six destroyers bombard Rabaul. The japanese submarine I-32 is sunk inside the port. Only the light cruiser Phoenix was damaged.
-9/3: The 77th INF DIV take Ponape after a short fight. The 4.100 japanese defenders are destroyed.
-9/9: The RADM Brown, after supply your ships in Lunga two days before, bombard Lae base. The damage is very light but the japanese suffer 500 casualties.
-9/13: The 3rd and 4th USMC Divisions disembark over Rabaul. The allies launch at once a general offensive against the japanese defenses. At dusk the japanese 21st infantry division show a stubborn resistence and the allies call off the attack.
-9/23: The RADM McCain leaves Lunga with the carriers Randolph, Hancock, Saratoga and Hornet, the light carriers Princeton, San Jacinto, Monterey, Cabot and Bataan, two battleships, two cruisers and 12 destroyers to launch heavy air attacks against Truk.
-9/26: The 27th USA INF DIV reforced the allied positions in Rabaul.
-9/29: RADM McCain carrier group start the air campaign against the Truk airstrips. In the first day of operations, 200 allied planes attack the japanese base and 90 japanese planes are destroyed. Only 20 allied planes are shot down.
-9/30: Second day of air operations against the Truk base. The japanese fight without hope and another 70 defenders are destroyed by the Hellcats. Some Bettys try to catch the RADM McCain group but all of them are shot down by CAP.

STATE OF THE WAR-MONTH RESUME-WAR DIARY

Burma Front

-10/2: Huge air attack from Rangoon against the British carrier group that protect the amphibious assault over Tavoy. Swarms of Hellcats shot down hundreds of japanese bombers without damage on ships.
-10/4: Another huge air raid against the British operation carrier group. This time the japanese cause light damage to BB Queen Elizabeth and CVE Battler at very high cost, 43 japanese bombers do not return.
-10/5: The british troops take Tavoy after a short fighting against a engineer japanese unit. Five transports damaged by japanese bombers this day.
-10/6: RADM Tanaka leaves Singapore with your surface force to catch the british ships near Tavoy.
-10/9: The Tanaka ships are sighted by british near Victoria Point and heavy attacked all day. The three battleships are torpedoed, BB Hyuga, BB Fuso and BB Yamashiro, the Fuso get the worst damage and your speed is reduced to 9 knots. RADM Tanaka retire to Singapore.
-10/25: The 19th UK INF DIV take Moulmein after a short trip from Tavoy. The british trasfer five squadrons from D.Harbor to Tavoy, mainly fighters and some Mosquito recon planes.

China sector

-10/20: The Chinese troops launch a surprise attack against Sian and take it. The japanese troops retire to Homan.

Southwest Pacific front

-10/20: The american troops, after a rough trip from Finshafen, reach the outskirts of Lae.
-10/22: An allied task force leaves Darwin to disembark the 43rd INF DIV over Koepang. Four CVE, six heavy cruisers, five light cruisers and 14 destroyers form the cover force.
-10/28: Start the amphibious assault over Koepang, only some LCI are damaged by coastal batteries.

South/Central Pacific Front

-10/1: New air attacks against the Truk airstrip from American carrier group. 23 japanese planes destroyed on land, only 5 allied planes lost.
-10/1: Continue the amphibious assault over Rabaul. Tiny japanese defense.
-10/2: Heavy infantry fighting in Rabaul beaches. The 27th and 37th INF DIV sparhead the attack.
-10/3: After three days of attacks against Truk, the RADM McCain carrier group retire your ships to Lunga.

OPEN MOVES (24 NOVEMBER 1944- 25 NOVEMBER 1944)

CHRONOLOGY

11/24/44:

-Morning: 1st japanese airstrike against the american carrier forces east Mariana Is. Target is TF 52.2. 15 Ki-49 bombers with a escort of 22 zeros and 20 Ki-61 try to reach the VADM Towers's naval force protected by 130 Hellcats! All japanese planes are shot down with no damage on allied ships. Only 3 Hellcats are destroyed.
-Morning: The TF 52.1 and TF 52.3 launch attacks against the Guam airstrip. 75 dive bombers and 34 level bombers with a escort of 32 fighters destroy on air and land 9 japanese planes. The american lost 15 planes, mainly by AA fire. A PG and a AK are damaged in the port.
-Morning: The Kido Butai leaves the Palau port a go to Mariana islands.

-Afternoon: The 2nd japanese airstrike, this time against the TF 52.1 is carried away by 13 Ki-67, 7 D4Y and 42 fighters (mainly J2M) and a torpedo hit the starboard side of CV Saratoga. The damage is minimal and the nipons lost 37 planes.
-Afternoon: The 3rd attack from Tinian by a couple of Ki-49 and 17 fighters is easly slaughtered by the american CAP.

11/25/44:

-Early morning: The B-29 (500th BG) based at Rabaul bombard the Guam airstrip. The japanese reaction get some success and 6 superfortress are shot down.
-Morning: The 1st japanese raid in this day target the replenishment group, around 120 miles south Guam. The AO Winnoski is hit by two bombs. The Hellcats shot down 6 attackers.
-Morning: The american carrier planes attack the Tinian airstrip with 63 level bombers escorted by 64 Hellcats. The japanese only have four planes in CAP. After the attack the japanese lost another 8 planes. The attackers lost 2 aircraft.

-Afternoon: 2nd japanese attack against the TF 52.1. Nine Ki-67 with two fighers. No damage on ships and four japanese bombers shot down.
-Afternoon: 3rd japanese attack and the most dangerous to date target the TF 52.3. 27 Dive bombers, 22 torpedo bombers and 11 level bombers escorted by 44 fighters. The american CAP was 45 Hellcats. The japanese, for first time, get through. One bomb hit the BB New Jersey's deck. Another breach the CV Intrepid's deck and cause a small fire. The worst is for the CV Enterprise. The ship was torpedoed two times and cause the blow up of one ammo depot spread a huge fire and heavy flooding. The ship was doomed.
In this attack the japanese lost 68 planes, the american only 9 Hellcats.

-Dusk: The CV Enterprise, still on fire and escorted by DD English and Ulhmann, return to Rabaul at 11 knots.

MAIN ACTION (26 NOVEMBER 1944- 28 NOVEMBER 1944)

CHRONOLOGY

11/26/44:

-Early morning: The american search planes locate the japanese 240 miles SW Guam.
-Morning: 1st american attack over Kido Butai. 25 dive bombers, 32 torpedo bombers escorted by 40 Hellcats and 55 FM2. The japanese CAP is 53 Zekes but the american get through anyway. 31 A6M5 are shot down and the attackers cause heavy damage on CVL Ryuho and moderate on CV Ikoma. 52 allied planes do not return.
-Morning: 2nd american raid. 27 dive bombers, 20 torpedo bombers and 36 fighters. The japanese CAP was only 9 fighters and in consequence the damage was more serious. The Ryuho rested crippled and the CV Aso and CV Ikoma get three or more bombs and both are out of combat with their flight deck closed and huge fires.
-Morning: The 3rd raid was little but the effects, without japanese CAP, are the worst. 25 Helldiver and only 11 Hellcats cause damage on CV Akagi (some fires) and again on CV Aso and CV Ikoma.
-Morining: The 4th raid was carried by 15 TBF and 14 Hellcats and the CVL Ryuho was torpedoed one time. The flooding in the ship was severe and your speed reduced to 9 knots.

-Morning: The 1st japanese raid target the TF 52.2 and was a total failure. 22 Judys and 17 Zekes are totally destroyed by the 60 Hellcats on CAP.
-Morning: The 2nd and main attack get some success. 91 Judys, 32 Nells and 32 B7A, escorted by 37 Zekes hit with a bomb the CV Wasp and the CV Randolph but the damage on those ships was minimal. The worst was on the BB Massachusetts. The battleship was hit by 3 bombs and a torpedo and suffer a moderate flooding and your speed reduced to 18 knots. Your combat capacity is not affected

-Morning: The japanese land based aircraft spent the day on attacks against the amphibious groups and, generally, get more success that the KB. Three CVEs was heavy damaged by bombs and torpedoes; the Shipley Bay, Sitkoh Bay and Steamer Bay. All must return to Rabaul at once.

-Afternoon: The wheather cancel all carrier attacks in the afternoon but the american replenish group rested in a position of good wheather, some 100 miles SW Guam and was attacked with bad results to allies. The DD Bell was sunk, splited away by a torpedo and another four destroyers was heavy damaged with two AOs, the Lackwanna and Tallulah.

11/27/44:

-Early morning: The TF 51.1 bombard Tinian with moderate effect. The japanese lost almost thousand casualties on land and 17 planes are destroyed but the base continue operational.
-Morning: With the first lights the Battle of Philippine sea enters on 2nd day of operations. Again, the americans reach first the japanese ships. The american carrier groups maintain a position 60 miles SW Guam and the japanese have your two divisions around 180 miles W of Mariana islands.
-Morning: 1st american raid. 26 dive bombers and 36 torpedo bombers escorted by 60 fighters. The japanese CAP was 67 fighters but once more time, the attackers get through. The CVL Zuiho is heavy damaged and the CV Soryu, BB Haruna and BB Hiei get a bomb each. The american lost 37 planes and the japanese 26.
-Morning: The 2nd and 3rd american raids was a failure. The japanese ships was not damaged and the attackers lost 27 planes. The slaughter on japanese side was huge, however.
-Morning: The 4th attack (with only 3 TBM and a couple of SB2C) cause serious damage on CV Soryu. The japanese carrier was hit by three bombs and the fires spread very fast.
-In this stage, the japanese CAP was so tin that only three or four fighters rested to confront the continous allied waves.
-Morning: The 5th allied attack clippled the CVE Chuyo, the CVE Taiyo was torpedoed and the CV Soryu is again hit by a bomb.
-Morning: In the 6th attack, the allies are without escort. The CV Ikoma (however is dead in the water, 100 miles away main group and in company of one destroyer) was damaged again.

-Morning: The japanese only launch a attack this day. 35 Judys, 37 Nells and 9 Grace escorted by 24 fighters attack the TF 52.1 with the expected results. The american CAP was 60 Hellcats and 53 japanese planes are destroyed. The CV Wasp was hit by a bomb and the CV Saratoga was torpedoed again. However, both ships continue fighting.

-Afternoon: With the japanese almost without planes and heavy defeated, the allies launch another raid without oposition and cause heavy damage on CVE Shinyo and CV Katsuragi. The CVE Shinyo sinks in minutes and the CV Katsuragi was crippled.

11/28/44:

-Early morning: The american Task Forces try to catch the japanese defeated near Ulithi atoll. The japanese simply try to return to Peleliu without more losses. The american have more success.
-Morning: 1st and definitive american airstrike. 98 Helldiver, 52 TBF escorted by 77 Hellcats. The japanese CAP was 28 fighters but all of them are very soon shot down. The CVE Chuyo was sunk, heavy damaged the CV Shokaku, CV Taiho, and CVE Taiyo. The BB Kirishima, BB Yamato, BB Haruna and CA Tone receive some bombs but continue without problems.

-Afternoon: The japanese reach a safety position near Palau (because the allies return to protect the amphibious assault on Tinian and Saipan) but some carriers are virtually doomed, like the three "Unryus".

-Afternoon: However, the near (to american carrier groups) japanese base of Peleliu, untouched to date, launch a small attack against the TF 52.4 with 2 G4M2 and 33 Ki-45KAIb and get a unexpected success. The BB Alabama was hit by two torpedoes that cause moderate flooding and reduce the speed to 17 knots. The CV Hornet also was hit by a bomb but the damage is minimal.

11/30/44:

-Early morning: a few miles away from Peleliu, the CVL Ryuho finally sinks.

12/1/44:

-Afternoon: The CV Enterprise is abandoned and sinks around 60 miles N of Truk. The destroyer English rescue the survivors and return to Rabaul.
