Hi,

I am writing an AAR in French in another forum, and I was willing to have seals or symbols to represent the main different "armies" during this war, at the top of my different posts (i.e. if I write a paragraph concerning the US navy, I will put the US Navy seal at the top).

For the US, I am using the Navy Seal, and what I believe was the USAAF symbol (the current USAF seal only appears after 1947 if I am right):

Are they correct ?

What would you recommand for US army forces ?

For the ANZAC, I struggle to find a common symbol or seal. But what they seems to have in common is the "Rising Sun" badge. So based on an original enameled badge picture (http://www.diggerhistory.info/images/badges-rsb/rsb-enammeled.jpg), I have created this one:

Does it seem to be correct to you ? Do you have a better symbol for ANZAC/Commonwealth forces ?

For the RAF and RAAF, should I use the badges or the roundels, what is closer to a seal ?

What about the different non-US navies ?

I would like to stick to "round" shape, but I can trade them for a flag if you think it's more accurate to represent it better (like the Royal Navy war flag for the Royal Navy)

Any idea welcome !

The Army and Marine Corps have their own seals also. ( USA) Dont think that cause the Marines fall under the Department of the Navy, they are sailors or use the Navy Seal ).

Prior to 1947 it was the Army Air Corps and part of the Army. In 1947 the United States Air Force was created as it's own service. My Dad was drafted in WWII into the Army Air Corps and was discharged with the option of being disharged with Army or Air Force uniforms. He said it was quicker to stick with his Army uniform.

Yes the Navy and Marine Corps both have their own seals and flags. The Navy one is on a blue background and the Marine flag is on a red background.

Yes. The ONLY difference between that one and the one my Dad had on his uniform was a 13 in the center to signify he was in the 13th Air Force.

Here's two patches I scanned in that I had of my Dad's. I'm not sure what the triangular one is but the circular one which matches what you had was under a training command patch so maybe what you have is a generic Air Corps patch and once assigned to a specific Air Force the number was added to the patch.

For anyone interested in the RAF roundel, there is an history page about it here:

So the correct roundel in the Pacific would have been the dark blue on light blue (without red):

Don't use "UK" as in WITP for the British Forces, should be "British".

Take a look at VI66 banner in the thread "Command At Sea -- The Rising Sun". He has the Navy, Army and Marine Corps symbols there and the Army one is much different than the one I sent you.

The Far East Air Force Insignia patch worn by airmen based in Australia under Major General George Kenny at Brisbane.

I don't know if it was the rocking of the ship or the fact it was a MARINE who told a NAVY sailor a joke like that that had me rolling on the deck.

I have an old pamphlet of my Dad's (dating back to 1947) that shows the 13th Air Force patch if you'd be interested. Also shows all the 13th Air Force bases.

Another thing the pamphlet shows (which will make vets laugh now) is that a Master or First Sergeant made a whopping $165.00 a month.

Dunno if this helps any, but I tripped over this site on the web, and it has the "seals" for the Royal Navy squadrons in the squadrons section. I thought it was interesting, anyway...
