My transport TFs almost unloaded the troops but many supplies still waiting!. I´ve decided to withdraw as I have enough troops to overun the Tulagi garrison. However 3 APs (3000 cargo ships) will have to stay. They´re so damaged that they won´t make it. And since they got troops inside, we will try to unload them.

Thus, my entire fleet will retreat also. I don´t know where are his ships or CVs, subs are around and Zero pilots are very tired and with low morale. Flying LCAP mission during thunderstorms makes the pilots sick .

Enemy intentions

No idea!. Don´t know where are the CVs...I´m very afraid of those navy pilots. They are quite good putting 1000 lb bombs in my transports.
My recon planes spotted 120 bombers at Irau and 85 at GG. I think he´s planning a big raid over Short or Vella Lavella. This could hurt me a lot so I ordered 2 datais to CAP these places.

Anyway weather avoided a big attack against my transport TF. So I´m a lucky man!. Some air combats over Lae and Buna but I won´t post them because I want to eat dinner now!

Internet is not working well...
Today showed US power, above and under the water . I have ordered my BBs to retreat to Buka. If I hadn´t done it, we would have seen a BIG naval battle!. The ships left at Tulagi went to the bottom of that cursed place. The others managed to flee and escape from enemy bombers (I think)

Next movements
For me, the battle is over. I´ve ordered a general retreat. I´m up 1200 points or so, and with the fall of Tulagi I should add another 100 VP.
My fighters (morale below 50 in most cases) have been spread all over the IJ bases (hate op. losses!) and the same with the bombers.

In two days this scen will have finished and I´ll be very relieved. Tulagi is now (as Lunga) a mousetrap!. If this had been another scen. I should effort myselt to solve this problem but because this scen is almost done, I won´t risk any important assest (ie. BB, CVs) So my CVs are definately going to Truk and should transfer some Zero to important bases, just to protect them!

Allied mauled every single base...and some of them are closed , porving that only few bombers are needed to destroy the runway

Tulagi mousetrap

Yes, I could send more troops to Tulagi but I don´t want to risk my ships. Moreover I spent most of my reserves so I guess there are no troops left!. I´m sure Timtom doesn´t have more troops since I destroyed his crack div. at Lunga (long time ago...)

Vella Lavella out of action
Runaway 81..... Fortunately I got 100 engineers there,. Don´t you think that this is a little bit unfair. When I bombed Irau (same size Vella Lavella) I NEVER reach this results...

This is a study of the pilots of the F1/6th datai during this campaign.

History (game history):

F1/6th Datai had the A6M3 from the first day of the campaign (1st, october). Mainly this datai was based in New Guinea bases, participating in many aerial combats over PM, Lae and Buna.

Enemies were equiped with Kittyhawks and Warhawks. Its most famous battle was the one fought in October the 5th, over PM skies. The datai, together with Oscars from the 24th Sentai attacked PM CAP (Kittyhawks and Warhawks) to support a major air raid of Nells and Betties. After two engagements Oscar and Zero shot down 13 P40 for the loss of only 1 A6M3.

The Zero and its pilots were far more experienced than those from the Allied side so the Datai gained many aerial victories during these battles. However attrition was high and some good pilots died during the first engagements.

So, early in November the Datai received new pilots and aircrafts. But NG area was a terrible battlefield and only two of these survived later in the scenario. It seems that during these days, this datai received some pilots from the F2/6th Datai so it is difficult to track the tour of duty of F1/6th Datai pilots.

During December, F1/6th Datai increasingly started to meet the new P38 Lighting. Dogfights with this aircraft were particulary fierce and many good pilots died and thus the experience of the datai dropped some numbers.

Datai final destination was Short, an important base during the South Pacific Campaing. His role was to escort Betties and Nells that were supporting the Tulagi invasion. The last losses and the high fatigue had caused the reduction of its morale to 32.

The number of victories during these three months were 49, 11 of them were from active pilots. In the final days of 1942, new replacements pilots came with so little flight hours that the final experience of the datai had dropped 13 points reaching a not promising level of 68.

Pilots who survived the entire campaign (pilots that were in the F1/6th Datai from the first day til the end): at the moment I can only find three pilots!!. But I´ll keep searching them...

Pilot: XP at the beginning/XP at the end/number of missions/ victories
High experienced pilots gain little or no experience. Usually they add one XP point for every 1 or 1.5 enemy aircraft shot down.

L. Ogawa: XP 87/89/101/3
P. Nikaido: 83/84/95/1
N. Muranaka: 79/80/91/1

Dead pilots, same as above, final data at the moment of their dead.

R. Ohara: 94/94/28/1
K. Nagahama: 93/93/70/2
Z. Miyano: 93/94/86/3
G. Ibusuki: 92/95/75/3
M.Fujiwara: 84/84/83/1
O. Kawakami: 78/81/75/3
F. Bando: 75/79/75/3

New pilots: Of the 9 new pilots who came in early november, only 2 pilots survived.

L. Matsuba: 56/58/64/0
K. Hanamoto: 59/64/69/1
***this pilot increased 5 XP points***

Died: Some of them archived great successes and gained a lot of experience but this couldn´t avoid their death.

H. Kaneko: 62/66/66/2

Timtom has written clues or advices regarding to Allied strategy in our last scenario. In most of the cases I agree but there are some exceptions. I´ll try to point out some ideas:

1. I was quite surprised when I saw Timtom didn´t have reinforced Lunga. Not a single unit or supply sent. If I had played the allied side I would have tried to defend Lunga with more untits. The best way to reinforce it is, in my opinion:

a) Use the C47s to air transport 1 BF, 1 Sea Bees, 1 AA and 2 more Rgts.

b) Use the DDs to send supplies, vehicles and the CD unit...at least until Lunga is isolated which can be archived in 4 days, when the BBs arrive in the area.

c) Mine Lunga before it is completely isolated

d) Place some PTs in Tulagi

e) Put SS even in coast or shallow hexes. Lunga has to be effectivelly covered by SS. I think I avoided many sub contacts using different Tokyo Express routes. Allied player needs to cover this routes also...best way is to put subs near to Lunga.

More or less what Timtom says, but I disagree with not placing aircraft at Lunga. Put at least one SBD there.
My vision is that if you want to defend Lunga, you have to use every defensive option: aircrafts, ships, LCU, and subs. Imagine this: Jap player sends wave after wave of bombers and ships to reduce Lunga but in one turn one DD is lost to PT action, another day one CA hits a mine, BB torpedoed by a sub, another day one CA which hits a mine is later sunk by SBDs based at H. Field...Look at my AAR. I remember that in one turn I could not send my Tokyo express to close Henderson and SBDs managed to take off. And if you send one Sea Bees and one more BF, they should keep Henderson open more often.

2. In this scen Timtom used his B17 strategically. Superb. Players usually use them as a tactical weapon: destroy airbases, planes on the ground, ships in port... But Timtom avoided the evacuation of Lunga forces and the construction of the base (=VPs). Very good in deed!. Of course there are other objectives. Send your bombers to close enemy airports, precisely when they are weak. When I was LCAP my invasion forces, Vella Lavella or Short were easy and important targets. If you close them NO LCAP over invasion forces any more!

3. Yes, build up Irau as soon as possible. This could change the couse of the scenario. When Timtom built it, I had many problems: my MSWs could not operate around the area, APs were unable to close Lunga, CVs were in really danger...A nightmare!

Regarding to NG, I think Timtom plans were superb but they needed more resources or more time. If you want to invade NG send your forces quickly, just before the IJ player can reinforce the weak garrisons there. When Timtom attacked my forts were so high and my ground forces so many that it was impossible to overun my garrisons. So two options

a) Send some FT TF with forces to ocuppy/help to ocuppy Salamaua, and Finch. Yes they will be visited by Jap LB or Bombardments parties or even your FT TF can be surprised by enemy TFs but you have to take some risks sometimes.

b) Send every Rgt. to Buna or Salamaua so you can overun them!. The more things you want to take the less forces you have to take them!. I had the entire Jap,. fleet and many IJ divisions and I only used them to take LUnga!

In both cases, try to avoid IJ reinforces...subs, surface TFs, airplanes...are welcome. Sometimes you only need a impressive victory to force your enemy to change his strategy. When I lost 20 LB during my air raids to Irau, I decided to call off the air offensive and the invasion!. I had "only" lost 20 VPs but in some way I realized that it was going to be too costly to invade/attack the base!.
