Hey,

I know this has been discussed before somewhere, but I can't seem to find the thread. My Marine Fighter Squadrons flying F4F-4s show an upgrade path to F6Fs instead of F4Us. What's the deal? How do I get my Corsairs? Playing ver. 1.4 if it makes a difference.

I want my Corsairs!! Sorry, to most people this may not seem like a big deal, but I spent five years in VMFA-314 ('90-'95) and so, playing the Marine Fighter squadrons is somewhat of a big deal to me.

Hi,

Upgrade path at present is F2A -> F4F-3 -> F4F-4 -> F6F , hte only marine corsairs you get will be those that enter the game with corsairs.

One fix is to use the database editor and add additional a/c ie a second F2A,F3F and F4F with the upgrade path of the 2nd F4F to the corsair and then edit the marine airgroups to these a/c
Also ajust the a/c production/replacement rate of the 1st a/c downwards so that you don't give yourself a bonus of extra a/c.

This is what i've done and works ok , but dont forget to clear it with any apponents before starting a game

cheers

Yes, but you do get boatloads of these -- enough to keep a marine fighter pilot happy, I think.

VMF314 arrives around the middle of '44 with Corsair fighters.

Once upon a time in a universe far far away there was a game called Uncommon Valor (UV), in that game Navy and Marine air groups both contained F4F fighter aircraft. While the ship based Navy upgraded to the F6 Hellcat the land based Marines upgraded to the F4U Corsair. Except there was a nasty bug that allowed the Navy groups to upgrade to Corsairs if off loaded from the carriers and this was much abused by players seeking to gain an advantage because of a game flaw.

Now in a universe closer to home we have a game called War in the Pacific (WitP) and in that game we also have Navy and Marine air groups that both contain F4F fighter aircraft. In this game however the "Normal" upgrade path is from F4F to F6 and all units will show that the F6 is the next upgrade in line in all cases but in a bit of computer magic the Marine groups ignore the F6 upgrade and go instead to the F4U automatically if the computer is left in charge of these upgrades. (The human may still mess this up by manually upgrading the Marine F4F groups to F6 but if left to computer control all Marine groups will automatically go from F4F to F4U.

So in our WitP universe it is now impossible for the Navy ship based squadrons to upgrade to F4U's like their cousins did in UV because the data base will not allow that and the game code forces the Marine groups to the F4U…

And they all lived happily ever after… The End

I just asked this question five minutes ago in the OOB thread after not having given it a thought for probably two months...

You're right, though, it is a big deal when you consider that F6Fs don't come in for several months after F4Us do. Also, if all your squadrons are equipped with F6Fs, you are only getting half the replacement aircraft to which you are entitled.

Pry's explanation clarifies all that, though. I just hope the artificial stupidity can handle the details. I hate trusting it to do anything.

Thanks Pry. I didn't know this. When I start seeing Corsairs being pooled, I'll place the Marines on auto upgrade.

Thanks, but can I do this with a saved game, or am I stuck making the database changes and then starting all over??

pry,

Is there anything similar going on with the Allied CV's introduced with partial airgroups? I have a question on that pending in the OOB thread. The later USN CV's come in with the fighters, torpedo bombers, and helf the usual number of dive bombers.

Yes it is supposed to be that way...

The computer is in control of allied carrier air group composition and group sizes from mid 42 untill Jan 1945, so some groups are set smaller (the computer will correctly fill them out once they arrive) and Cousair groups are set to 9999 because the carrier arrives in 44 and the computer will activate them on 1/1/45 when it makes the final composition change for the war.

Thank you, sir! That kind of thing is different from what's in the manual and what one might conclude from looking ahead (intel) or in the database.
