Dec. 7th 1942 has been reached, a milestone to be shure, I gota say that htis is the best wargame I have ever played, while many are certainly up thier this game takes the cake.

Presently the situation has not changed to much from what is shown above, although Sansapor, Babo and Noemfoar in NW New Gunie have been secured.

The Cost:

Japanese Losses:

CA-3,CL-10,DD-aprox. 78,SS-13,TK-7,AO-9,AP-160,AK-15

Allied Losses:

CA-4,CL-12,DD-46,SS-19,TK-3,AK-68,AP-12

Mines have clamed 17 ships, 9 were from Sublaunched mines, many others damaged.

800KG AP bombs have acounted for 3 ships (one PT at pearl,1-DMS and a CA at Darwin)

500pound and 1000 pound GP bombs the Big allied killers of ships by far.

250 KG AP bombs acounted for 8 ships thus far.

Japanese torpedos have been their bigest ship killers thus far.

18 inch MK XII have acounted for 22 ships.

Top Aircraft loss's:

.........................

Theater wise things are prety much as they are listed above, 43 should be an interesting year in the game:

We have now reached early January 43, December was fairly quiet, no real earth shaking events have occured as of lat some miniour moping up actions in NW New Gunie, and this recent atack aganst waht was presumably a Surface action force intent on catching shiping off one of the near by allied bases.

Coast was or will likely be two Japanese Light Cruzers and a few DD's, this force was atacked by scades of land based air assests including 1000 pound bomb slinging B-17's.

Hi, 3/10/43 Brady has been creeping north in lower SRA capturing Menado and landing on Timor. Recntly he also landed and captured Wake Island.
A few days ago he began bombing Marcus with CV and surface TF. I had moved my CV from Singapore to Brunei when I decided it was futile for them to enter enemy LBA range to protest Menado then when Wake landing began they moved to Iwo Jima (closest base I could have fuel moved to soon enough) but were too late to intervene there. So my CV (Junyo,Hiyo, Ryujo, Kaga,Akagi, Soryu, Hiryu, and Shokaku) were in port Iwo when the bombing of Marcus began.
The Allies destroyed over 100 Japanese aircraft while my CV in 3 TF moved east. I figured the enemy would retire towards Wake so I was south west of Marcus at dawn when scouts reported a massive enemy force east of Marcus. Enemy CV reacted to the discovery of my CV and a battle was fought.

Air to Air results 191 Allied 219 Japanese aircraft shot down in air to air combat
AA 17 Allied 61 Japanese aircraft shot down by AA
Japanese strikes were mostly without escorts dispite having 4 CV set entirely to escort mission.

The first wave of Allied aircraft was prevented from attacking however the 2nd wave broke through. A 3rd smaller wave also managed to make attacks

The Japanese also attacked in 3 waves but the light escort resulted in most Japanese bombers being shot down and those that survived the CAP were then subjected to fierce Allied AA fire.

In the PM weather covered the Allied CV and the Japanese were only able to send a weak strike against the transport TF that scored 2 hits on a CVE.
The fate of Marcus will be decided in the next day or so. Hopefully the heavy loss of aircraft will compell the Allies to retire.

Hi, 3/11/43 nothing but a big smoke trail leading back to Wake. Allied heavies hit a few Japanese AK unloading at Marcus.
Soryu and Shokaku have lost flight ops and continue to burn but if they can reach a port out of range they will return by 1944. Going to be hard to replace 200+ IJN CV pilots.
I had protected them just for a battle of this sort and hoped to inflict a major setback. Now I think Brady is just pulling back to refit his airgroups.
Zuikaku was in port Japan during battle but has gotten underway so the next round the Japanese will only be light 1 Soryu class CV compared to last battle. Currently not counting Zuikaku (full airgroups) the IJN has 322 aircraft on the CV around Marcus.
(Nice to fight battles next to bases stocked with CV type groups) The rookie (carrier capable but not carrier trained) groups will stand watch while the actual CV groups refit.
Once Zuikaku arrives Japan will have 400+ ready aircraft. I'm hoping I knocked at least 2 enemy CV out of action for a while.
The Brigade assigned the defense of Marcus Island has not even left the Home Islands yet So it is important to keep enemy transports away for a bit longer.
(I don't really even try to prevent a base capture by putting LCU on them. I just try to make the enemy at least have to make an effort rather then hop around with a division or two. 1 Brigade dug in level 9 with supply can hold against 1 or 2 divisions. (The are also Japanese support troops on all Islands)
The major failure in Central Pacific so far has been with patrol groups not spotting the enemy. The first hint I get is when screen pops up with 200+ enemy CV planes hitting my airfield. Measures have been taken to help prevent these tactical suprises from occuring in the future.

Hi, I continue to be unable to prevent Brady from going where he wants when he wants.
Following our latest CV battle I rebuilt my CV groups using my last remaining reserves of trained pilots. Both Soryu and Shokaku sank before reaching port.
Soon after Brady moved a CV TF up into range of Marcus so Kaga, Akagi, Zuikaku,Junyo, Hiyo and Ryujo in 2 TF went out to meet them. I also sent a surface TF composed of 4 BB with CA/CL/DD escorts to remain on station in reaction range of Marcus should he attempt toland or bombard. Another 125 AC were sent to Marcus.
Well it all unraveled.
First my CV launched 190 bombers against his CV without escorts. None survived to make attacks.
Now unarmed my CV had to retire and Brady followed catching my surface TF.
He bombarded Marcus causing much destruction. Iwo Jima and Bonin were socked in by weather so no Japanese strikes launched.
The following day when they did fly only 2 LBA bombers survived the CAP (Iwo sent 13 fighters to escort 44 bombers all were shot down Bonin sent 27 fighters to escort 24 bombers 2 attacked) Iwo is a size 5 airfield and Bonin a 4. I had hoped for better strikes. Weather and bad luck has pretty much stripped Marcus of any defense from the IJN or Japanese air. Eney transports are 120 miles off to the east (1 was hit by Japanese submarine)
In SRA I keep becoming so involved in Marcus that I am forgetting to route my AK/TK I keep letting them get into range of Menado (rather then sail west up around Borneo out of SRA or around PI and down into SRA)
Now he has begun landing on Andamann Island off the coast of Malaya. At least Japanese LBA opposed it a little today (yesterday Vicky point had weather today Am was claer but PM weather halted flights)

It looks as if Brady will be in Tokyo by June or July 43. The IJN is helpless and my airforces ineffective. I have to think of something to at least slow him down. (I don't want to lose as Japan in 1943 ) I have lost 500 aircraft in the last few days and in return I doubt I have gotten more then 60 At least 1 IJN BB will be lost. I have hundreds of aircraft but my fighter force is showing signs of collapse. I don't know what I can do about my CV bomber groups. This is what happens when I try to play without beer.

Keleun. I am going to make an offer to let you out of out "bet" at this point. As much as I'm looking forward to a week-long Irish wiskey binge, I'm starting to suspect that these two fellows are "throwing" the game just to back up their fan-boy views. Either that or Mogami is playing with his left hand and both eyes closed.

Hi, Mike that makes no sense. Brady is a Japanese fan boy winning the war. I play the Allies more often then Japan. (My screen name is in honor of a cat not the IJN CA)
I am doing the best I can. I just can't seem to be able to prevent Allied progress to the degree I counted on when making my pre war plans. It's not easy to stop the Allies once they have the material and position to operate from. The P-38 and Corsair are wearing out Japanese fighter groups.
If I could just get the Japanese to be able to actually present a combined arms coordinted attack.......However I still have a few cards left to play. I hope to catch Brady off guard at some point in the future. The SRA does not worry me all that much but the Central Pacific has be worried. I thought I would be able to present a better defense. Marcus was supposed to put up a fight but instead around 300 Japanese aircraft have been lost without ever flying a strike. (I failed to have the required surface force to prevent enemy bombardments and instead appear to have lost another 2 BB for nothing) This is a hard game for Japan after they run out of offensive steam.
I would advise Japanese players to insure they provide forces to hold Rabaul/Solomons because it defends NG. Brady gained a year here because I commited everything to retaking Tarawa and aborted attempt at Baker Island. If we were still fighting in South I would not have problems in SRA or Central Pacific.

Hi, The Japanese carrier force finally succeeds in attacking enemy shipping near Marcus.
A little to late as Marcus was captured a few days before. Because of the costly unescorted strikes prior to the enemy landing the IJN CV were unable to prevent the landings. The carrier groups have been brought back up to strength but for the first time in the war are composed mostly of untrained pilots. (The pilots trained on mapo were used to rebuild the groups after the last carrier versus carrier battle and were then mostly lost in the great unescorted strikes)
Since I can't save Marcus I have to try to damage enough enemy shipping to delay the next landings. The IJN is commited totally to the defense of Iwo/Bonin/Siapan/Tinian areas.
The strikes were all at range 5 so only bombs were employed. Japanese floatplanes were even launched to bomb the enemy. (I don't think any floatplanes scored a hit)

Hi, I sent the remains of the IJN on a one way trip to Marcus and quess what they found?
VICTORY. There was no Allied surface TF defending the base nothing but a herd of PT boats. To date 47 Allied ships list Marcus as location they were sunk at. One of the cheapest Japanese victories of the war to date. (cost to Japan 1 DD and 16 aircraft)
The bombardment did fail to close the airfield.

Not bad, Bubba. For the loss of 16 AC and the Hiyodori (a glorified PT boat) you got (at least) 24 AK, 3 TK, 2 AP, 1 MSW, and 8 PT plus several thousand troops.

Keep it up!

Edit: and 19 Allied planes.

Uh oh. The Amatsukaze went down. Was Hara still the ship captain? Did he survive. You know, if he dies, he never writes his book....

Whoa, you dudes are really having a cool slugfest here. Must be having a blast with this game. Looks like Mogami is getting himself butchered as usual.

For the damage on the CVs is it worth it for Japan to lose so many valuable planes?

Hi, Hurrah at last the KB scores a victory. USN CV Essex sunk several CVL damaged and RN CV damaged enemy fleeing south with KB in pursuit.
A battle for Eniwetok has been raging for weeks with Japan still holding the base.
In SRA enemy are spreading like a wild fire capturing empty bases with Japan unable to halt their progress. I keep hoping he will run out of transports.

Hi, RN CV Indomitable reported sunk from damage incurred in recent CV battle. I think Brady is running out of CV/CVL/CVE in condition to operate. The IJN CV might be able to do some real damage now in Central Pacific. In SRA there are simply too many Corsair
The transport bug really hurt me at Entiwetok. 200 Assasult points vanished after air transport and shock attack failed to get 1-1. (a Bde and Eng rgt were lost to bug)

Hi, Brady captured San Jose and began building the airfield. (3 hexes from Clark Field.) Clark Field is a size 9 with oddles of Japanese aircraft. Over the last few turns Japan has actually been destroying more enemy aircraft then it loses per turn. Happiness is blowing up Corsairs on the ground. (I've now destroyed 56 in A2A and 56 on ground) A few small
cheap shot landings have been repelled (He lands 900 guys on emety base and then flies in AV sets CAP and sends transports.) Japanese Paras wiped out 3 such attempts.
Just how many transports do the Allies have????

18 July 1943
Hi, I am going to track a Japanese operation from start to finish and then post it.
Because of the critical situation in central Pacific where a battle for Eniwetok has been raging for some time the IJN CV force is going to sortie. I feel Brady must be stetched to his limit and a serious reverse now will buy time for Japan.

The Japanese air forces remain strong numericaly but quality has declined to dangerous levels. I need a quiet period to train.
Enemy LBA in SRA is too strong but only 2 airfields exist in Cenral Pacific. I might be able to inflict loss to surface and logistic ships.

I've ordered my CV to gather in Tokyo and am refitting their air groups. On hand are
CV Zuikaku,Hiryu,Akagi, Amagi, Unryu,Taiho,Hiyo,
CVL Ryujo
Total Capacity 512 aircraft.

9 IJN BB remain but only Kirishima is ready as escort.
11 IJN CA remain with 10 in condition to sail
6 IJN CL with 4 available
35 IJN DD with 21 of proper type or readiness.

Air group status on July 18th 1943
5 CV have fighter groups on board as of this time.
AI-1 Daitai (A6M3a) on board CV Akagi (max size 27) has 30 Pilots from 99exp to 40 exp Avg is 64 group only has 16 aircraft at moment
DI-1 Daitai (A6M3a) on board CVL Ryujo (max size 28) has 30 pilots from 99exp to 41exp Avg is 65 group has 28 ready and 2 reserve ac
DIII-1 Daitai (A6M3a) on board CV Hiyo (max size 19) has 18 pilots from 86exp to 36 exp Avg is 61 group has 18 ready ac
JI-1 Daitai (A6M5) on board CV Unryu (max size 24) has 27 pilots from 65exp to 53exp Avg is 58 group has 24 ready ac
JII-1 Daitai (A6M5) on board CV Amagi (max size 24) has 27 pilots from 67exp to 51exp Avg is 59 group has 24 ready ac

5 CV have divebomber groups on board
AI-2 Daitai (D3A) on board CV Akagi (max size 27) has 30 pilots from 93exp to 40exp Avg is 57 group has 27 ready and 3 reserve ac
DIII-2 Daitai (D3A) on board CV Hiyo (max size 19) has 19 pilots from 70exp to 43 exp Avg is 51 group has 19 ready ac
GI-2 Daitai (D4Y) on board CV Taiho (max size 27) has 22 pilots from 71exp to 56exp Avg is 65 group has 22 ready ac
JI-2 Daitai (D4Y) on board CV Unryu (max size 24) has 18 pilots from 69exp to 55exp Avg is 60 group has 18 ready ac
JII-2 Daitai (D4Y) on board CV Amagi (max size 24) has 18 pilots from 67exp to 53exp Avg is 60 group has 18 ready ac

4 CV have torpedo groups on board
AI-3 Daitai (B5N) on board CV Akagi (max size 18) has 21 pilots from 88exp to 44exp Avg is 56 group has 18 ready ac
BII-3 Daitai (B5N) on board CV Hiryu (max size 15) has 15 pilots from 92exp to 31exp Avg is 50 group has 15 ready ac
DI-3 Daitai (B5N) on board CVL Ryujo (max size 19) has 19 pilots from 81exp to 34exp Avg is 47 group has 19 ready ac
DIII-3 Daitai (B5N) on board CV Hiyo (max size 13) has 13 pilots from 93exp to 30exp Avg is 52 group has13 ready ac

So I need to find, fill out and transfer to ships 3xFighter groups 3xDivebomber groups and 4xtorpedo groups.
On hand carrier trained groups
Fighters
BI-1 Daitai (A6M2) Hakodate (max size 27) has 28 pilots from 97exp to 36exp Avg is 48 group has 26 ready ac
BII-1 Daitai (A6M3a) Tokyo (max size 23) has 27 pilots from 95exp to 33exp Avg is 54 group has 20 ready ac
EI-1 Daitai (A6M3a) Tokyo (max size 30) has 22 pilots from 90exp to 51exp Avg is 61 group has 16 ready ac
EII-1 Daitai (A6M3a) Tokyo (max size 27) has 27 pilots from 99exp to 37exp Avg is 61 group has 26 ready ac
GI-1 Daitai (A6M5) Tokyo (max size 27) has 11 pilots from 69exp to 59exp Avg is 64 group has 10 ready ac
Divebomber
BII-2 Daitai (D3A) Tokyo (max size 23) has 28 pilots from 93exp to 45exp Avg is 57 group has 23 ready and 4 reserve ac
EI-2 Daitai (D3A) Tokyo (max size 27) has 27 pilots from 99exp to 36exp Avg is 58 group has 27 ready ac
EII-2 Daitai (D3A) Tokyo (max size 27) has 27 pilots from 68exp to 36exp Avg is 56 group hs 18 ready and 9 damaged ac (just received replacements)
Torpedo
3xgroups equipped with B6N but understrength and AC not currently in production (GI-3,JI-3,JII-3) total combined 25 ac. I could withdraw groups (you can't disband carrier groups) to get required ac but then I'd have to employ untrained pilots to fly them.
Lets see what happens. GI-3 has the fewest pilots and ac but it will bring one of the others to full strength in ac.
Now JI-3 (B6N) Tokyo (max size 16) has 16 pilots (just drew 7 from pool) from 67exp to 29exp group has 16 ready ac
DII-3 (B5N) Tokyo (max size 13) has13 pilots from 79exp to 36exp Avg is 49 group has 12 ready 1 in repair ac
EI-3 Daitai (B5N) Tokyo (max size 13) has 19 pilots from 80exp to 41exp Avg is 48 group has 13 ready ac
EII-3 Daitai (B5N) Tokyo (max size 18) has 21 pilots from 66exp to 44exp Avg is 52 group has 18 ready and 1 reserve ac

OK have all required groups just need to bring them to full strength and move to CV.

The IJN is down to just 2 AO for replenshment so I'll need to refuel from bases. Saipan will be refueling base with replacement aircraft moving there to refit airgroups.

Phase I movement to Saipan and refueling prior to moving to contact.
Saipan currently has 50k fuel 56k supply ordering TF to move another 200k
Order minesweep TF (5xMSW) to clear Saipan

1 Aug 1943
Nothing! CV did not launch, enemy did not attack. Weather clear and contacts reported. I will attempt to return to Truk to refuel (200k fuel there) pick up replacement aircraft and return to this area. However will remain here 1 more day before retiring. So far the operation has not yielded the desired results.

3 Aug 1943
CV Hiryu damaged by 2 bombs and 1 torpedo (35/50/27) will attempt to make it back to Saipan. Remaining TF retreating out of range.
heavy loss among fighter groups
Operation has been pretty much a bust. (couldn't get my CV to attack and had CAP set 50-50 so not only did enemy strikes get through half my fighters did nothing

4 Aug 1943
Disaster! CV ac remaining 5 fighters 11 DB and 7 TB. Encountered enemy CV with fighters set to 100 percent CAP. Bomber groups decided now they would fly and were wiped out for nothing over 300 ac lost. Minor damage to several CV. Transfered 27 fighters (A6M3a) to CV Unryu. 15 fighters to CV Hiyo (A6M2)
Airgroups that are able (have a ready aircraft) transfered to Saipan. 41 fighters on CAP will have more tomorrow if TF in range

Entire herd making for Ulithi. All I can do now is try to wreck enemy CV groups when they attack. Hiryu trying to get into Ponape to put out fires. (unless the weather gods protect her she can't stay there)

8 Aug 1943
CV Hiryu sank at Ponape.

Operation must be considered a fiasco. (3 CV 1 CVL for a few LST)

Nice report Mogami, well done I must say.

Based on past operations and the inhearent logistics trail I always have in place for such operations I feal the undertaking of this operation was worth the effort, at least from His prespective, though He was just unlucky. He missed about 20 transports at Eniwetock by two days, and Most of the ships at Kusie had departed South the moment I saw his TF which was about 2 days out.

Allied CV's had just begaine to arive at Midway from repair in Hawaii and the West Coast from earler operations, they sortied as soon as the enemy was spoted and moved into a posation to block the enemy as they retired from the main combat area.

The F4U's(Land based) and the Helcasts and British Coursars and Helcats had a field day with enemy air assests, realy the strikes from the Allied CV's could of been better, but were suifient to force a port visit at Truck and my Land basesed assest were as noted able to acheave signafagant efect on the ships in port.

...................

If Mogami had not gone South for that extra day he would of Missed the Allied CV's.
