In my opinion - Ki 61 Tony.I was really worried about my army fighters.Oscars were better then Nates but weren't as good as Zeros.In IX 42 I was really scared.My Zeros started to suffer significant loses in air combats.My army pilots were poor trained (the best groups had 60-65 experience poitns) but Tony entered to the service.First of all I use him in India.I was prepared to take heavy loses because my Zeros were figting good but Zero pilots were much more well experienced...And what happened??Impressive victory - about 70 Tonys spotted 35 british fighters - as I remember most of them were Hurricanes II.I really kicked their asses - about 20 British fighters were destroyed and my Tonys didn't take any loses - even no one was damaged!!!!

I compared aircrafts statistics and I think that Tony - which is available in the middle of 42,which is strong construction (much more stronger than Zero),is fast,have great firepower and good range is the best japanese fighter in the game - especially because it is available so fast and in many aspects he is better than A6M5 Zeke which is available much more later.What do you think about that???

I specially compared army fighter with some navy fighters (A6M ) because in first part of the game navy has so better aircrafts (zeros vs oscars and nates) that in many cases we could only count on navy fighters - army fighters can't win supremacy in the air

Unfortunately they don't factor in the poor overal maintainability of the aircraft or the difficulties the ground crews had with the aircraft.

It is an interceptor, derivative of Me-109E. Good for point defence. You'll need your Zeros, it is Pacific, not Europe.

noticed in my game (Allied, Aug 42 to 46) that the Tony was pretty good in the hands of the AI

it showed up in China, it toar up one of my I-153 squadrons (I know) so moved over a Cane squadron, that got hit HARD, so flew in another, along with a Spit squadron

they got hammered, so moved over the other P-40 FG, that held it's own, but was doing less then splitting losses with the Tony Unit

brought down the Night Fighter and targetted that base, the next day, the Tonies were flying at night, the daylight B-25 raid, took out most of the Tonies on the ground

now it can not put up decent numbers of planes, so are being picked off a few at a time, but over all, that is one good unit

Me likes my Tonys as well. I am now in mid 9.'42 and so far it does very good over Burma, esp. against Wellingtons and the likes.

What is more - tony is so good that I think about sending some of them to my bases near Pearl Harbour because after some fights in India british fighters were completly shattered (when I had only Zeros they had some big loses that I just resigned from attacking enemy CAPs).Now I have hundreds Tonys (my nates upgraded to Oscars and Oscars could upgrade to Tony) so I can send some of them to "important" places.They fight much more better than Zeros (especially when Zeros lose they "combat bonus" later in the game),have less operational loses and have fine firepower to conduct anti-naval and "ground" missions.Their canons are much more accurate and deadly then Zero canons.Ki 100 Tony and Frank of course are better than Tony but they won't be available soon so Tony will be my primary fighter durning the game.

The tony was a good mid war design-capable of mixing it up with any Allied fighter of the era.

However, the second generation of planes (lightning, mustang, P47, later spits, corsairs and hellcats) were all capable of dealing with it.

A bit limited in range though, a serious liability in the Pacific.

As usual, lack of good radios, maitenance and spare parts affected the tony. Just like any other Japanese planes.

This says it all. There was nothing wrong with the Tony as a design, and the Diamler-
Benz engine copied was one of the wars "greats". On paper is was a good solid A/C.
But the Japanese industry building it wasn't really up to the tolerances and quality
control needed, and the crews that had to maintain it had to virtually learn from scratch
because the Japanese military had used almost exclusively Radial Engines up until the
Tony's introduction. Add in the shortage of spares, and the Tony was left as one of
the least serviceable A/C in the Pacific. It should probably suffer a much higher rate
of "attrition" and "down" time in the game to model this..., but it doesn't seem to.

EVERY A/C in the Pacific had a lot of serviceability problems due to the climate,
terrain, and length of supply lines. The Tony's were unique because it was a
unique A/C for the Japanese at the time. And it was a new design and production
challange for an already strained economy. Servicing it required total retraining
of crews in the field. Production required higher tolerances just at the time the
Japanese production facilities were being forced to use more and more unskilled
labor and their machine tools industry was falling behind the demands being made.
It's almost THE perfect example of the problems Japan faced in the war trying to
match great industrial powers from an industrial base that was too small and narrow.
The could produce some good designs..., but large-scale, high quality production in
the US sense just wasn't feasible.

Seem to me it takes much longer to repair a 4E bomber. Also, you can't operate them from smaller bases plus need substantially more supplies. This does a fair job of representing the complexity of the big birds.

little bit OT

higher value for bombers than for a fighters it's also not modeled. It is not a same if you shoot down japanese/alied fighter with just one pilot or shoot down japanese bomber (3-7 crew)/allied bomber (6-11 crew).

Does anyone knows/made tests how much time take repairing fighter and bomber?

I'm just curious - it was told that repair rate is faster in 1.4 patch...

I also have a slightly off-topic question. I was playing with the Marianas scenario yesterday, and I was having trouble finding a fighter that could help Japanese LBA stave off bombardment TFs forming up six hexes away from Guam etc. The Zeke lacks the range to escort the Betties, and I didn't see any Zeroes in the Japanese OOB for this scenario. Is upgrading the Zero to the Zeke worth it, given the range limiations of the latter?

With the comming patch you'll have the chance to upgrade or downgrade planes. Usually i never abbandon at all my loved A6M2s. They can be very usefull even in the latest months of war

i do, but i try to have always a good mix of planes in my front lines. Consider that by the date the A6M3 become available you'll have plenty of a6m2s in the pool and i hate to waste all those HI points upgrading all my units to the next model
