AGs are barges

the japs used then to supply front line bases

we used PTs to intercept and sink em

use them with barge hubs to supply smaller otr front line bases

theyre much harder to hit then an AK

If you'd played UV you'd probably already have the answer.

In WITP it is a little harder because the effective range of these creatures is 2-3 hexes ... but they are probably most useful in the Solomons and Northern NG ... anywhere where you have lots of bases within 2-3 hexes of each other ... using a few AK to set up the fuel is nice ... and the rear area bases will need more AG than the forward ones ... so it takes some getting used to and persistence. To get them to the front ... put them in a convoy with a TK and go forth ... it will take them a while to get there. I use them in computer control mode ( not auto convoy ) once they get to their primary base.

Use them in Solomons. A group of barges will be based every two hexes and bring supplies from its base to the next base and so on up to your forward positions.

Another possible use is to bring troops to take small/undefended base behind you main line of advance. No need to send a division or a brigade to take three coconuts farms and a wharf.

Barges are really useful in aera under enemy LBA range.

Agreed. Use them where you need to supply a base, but not willing to loose a AK to do it. No points for either side when sunk.

And yet the AI seems to send them out from Truk to Rabaul.

Counting on the one-hex-minimum-movement rule ?

Yeah I'm puzzled by where I find them - Truk being a classic example!

So I end up sending them with some tanker to keep topping them up until they get to the Solomons? Given yuo can create them in situ then why have them at the start in these oceanic bases?

I think the prior poster covered it best. Use them when they get fuel depleted, as one-hex-per-turn-movers. You would be in very great danger to a tanker to send one alone to refuel them. I'd rather the AG's sit where there are found than have a tanker attacked, but I like the 1-hex startegy better. I'm not even sure if their cargo capacity is worth the fuel they will expend, they're probably so inefficient.

There's another angle to them I just thought. For JA the Kwajalein area is real good for short trips, but another thing you can do is place them in a base that's likely to suffer air attacks, as they can possibly absorb some of the punishment instead of something you actually have some use for. I don't think I would use them to transport in a contested area however, just because I would automatically consider their cargo lost.

Aha, so in that sense they are a bit like the inflatable tanks and plywood structures that were all over the eastern side of England in the months before D-day - no use at all but maybe confused the enemy a bit?

What I'm saying is if you have say two DD's docked, the DD's will certainly get attacked with a port air raid if the raid spots them. OTOH, if you have 2 DD's and 10 AG's, some of the attack is likely to steer towards the AG's, though if they have no point value as someone suggested, that might eliminate them as targets.

Roger Neilson: Yeah, now that I come to think of it, your suggestion, if in fact it was one, though it seems it was meant to be humorous, is, strangely enough a purpose in itself. If enemy intelligence is simply recording the number of ships at a base, and you have nothing there but the absolutely most worthless ships (AG's especially) they will appear just as menacing as any other ship and en masse might look like a port well defended when it's not.

In UV you never got AG unless you created them. So they only showed up where you wanted them. So far, in WITP ( and I've only been allowed to play the Japanese ) I have never created any AG ... never had the game let me. The game seems to be bringing them in where it wants to...so I either ignore them or move them where I want them.

Wherever possible I try to be both humorous and serious.... sometimes it doesn't work. in this case I was after both effects!

I do like the idea of the intell overload aspect, and also what I'd call the marshmallow effect on allied bombing of a port.

Jolly good, as some of you Englanders would say. I sense you may have mastered the art of what I like to call seriously joking, or jokingly serious, take your pick.
