Hi,

I have been looking for a more complex game then the RTS games out there. I have been playing Rome Total War type of games and it has been years since I have played any board games like Blizkrik.

I have been looking at different games offered by Matrix and HHTR and War in The Pacific look good to me. Since I am a just starting out with very little experience in these games which game would be the best to start with?

Are there any other games that you would recommend? I like something that looks good as well as a good game play. I also like to be able to micromanage or switch to macro managment depending on how I feel.

Thanks for your suggetions.

HTTR will be easier for you to get into. You can micro-manage to your heart's content or use the excellent command and control structure built into the game. Since it runs in 'real-time' (but pausible too) you should feel right at home coming over from RTS games, I know I did

Going by your previous games I would leave WiTP well alone. That game aswell as UV to quote someone else makes my brain bleed.

Try UV first.

Download SPWAW as its free.

Buy HTTR or FG or wait for GGWAW. FG is new and cheap and looks very good indeed. HTTR......Ive never heard anything bad said about this game. I had my problems with it but as your from an RTS background you should be fine. Lots of depth and tactics.

Get SPWaW if you don't have it already. Free game from Matrix. Its not a demo but an entire free game, and it kicks ass.

FG is already out, it is Flashpoint Germany excellent game and easy to get into.

GGWAW is Gary Grisby's World at War which looks to be an excellent game check its forum in the Matrix Forums for news and updates on release dates

By far the most newb friendly game (and an all round excellent game to boot) in the Matrix stable is Tin Soldiers: Alexander. After that, Flashpoint Germany is also pretty easy to get into, as is HttR (especially for RTS fans). Whatever you do get the free version of SPWaW; a wonderful game (just don't expect state of the art graphics). If you are willing to invest a little learning time early on, you would probably enjoy Korsun Pocket and/or Battles in Normandy, too.

Avoid War in the Pacific initially... spend some time looking through the forum and you'll see why It's an excellent game, but a very complex and time consuming one (far to much so for me!). I can't see much point in buying Uncommon Valor either, if you get into that you will probably have enjoyed WitP anyway, so you will just have wasted your money.

Depends on what you´re up to. FPG is definelty a game that is aimed at the beginner to advanced player (you can really make it easy or hard, depending on your game preference settings). HTTR can also be easy, but still it needs quite some time of manual reading and training. But once you have learned the basic it´s hell of a fun game. It´s my personal favourite (I love FPG) with regards to the different game engines we publish. But that´s just my two euro cents .

I just made a similiar post a couple of weeks ago. Here's a link to the thread if you want to check it out for some more opinions: link.

I'm coming from a RTS background and was craving something more complex just as you are. Personally, I went with Battles in Normandy which was probably more complex than I was ready for initially. However, even though my initial learning curve was extremely steep, I'm now really growing to love it. I just love how deep it is and how many strategies and completely different approaches can be used. As opposed to RTS style games, I actually take away a feeling of satisfaction from this game because winning actually takes, gasp! Intelligence (plus a little luck)

The other game that was recommended to me was HTTR. I'm sure I'll get it eventually, but I'm really enjoying the pure contemplative, turn-based style of BIN right now. Flashpoint Germany is also now on my list.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I decided to go with HTTR versus BIN only because I found the colors of the HTTR relaxing versus BIN. BIN seemed visually too busy. I know this is not a way to judge a game but games for me have to be visually clean and with good graphics. Since you spend so much time looking at the screen.

I really like to work my way up to WITP but that is going to take some time.

Inexpensive... I believe inexpensive was the word you were looking for

I'm glad someone else thinks that. I commented when BiN was released that I found it very hard on the eyes, but I seemed to be in a minority of one! I don't think they are bad, but "too busy" (or maybe "cluttered") is a pretty good description.

Can't quite understand why you guy's are not recomending Witp on the small scenarios? If the guy can handle Romes legions in RTS against the Germanic Hordes then MacArthur is not exactly a big deal is he?

True, but WitP is a relatively expensive game that requires a lot of time and effort to get value out of it. Elsewhere I've recommended tracking down UV s/hand as a 'taster' for WitP. Personally, I have UV and don't like it enough to justify expenditure on WitP - there's something about Gary Grigsby's games that I just don't 'get' (I've played several over the years).

As Eric said.

WitP is an expensive and complex game that needs an awful lot of time to get the best out of it. There are several better choices for the new wargamer in the Matrix stable - and there's no reason he can't get WitP later.

Reading mashkis' specific requirements again, I think his best choice is probably HttR also. Which is just as well, as that's what he plumped for! Continuous time should help an RTS player feel right at home, and all the management/micromanagement options are there too, and executed superbly.
