B-29s strike Brunie!!!!
OIL
OH for some oil!
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

tabpub tells me that the invasion fleet that is now off Sarmi was due last month -before my "intervention", so I did gain time!
All along the PNG coast I am pounded -especially Biak -poo -I moved some planes in there -forgot to switch to no reinforcements -and now im going to pay for that blunder.

Some 100 plus Judy, oscar, helen kamis attack today - all are s/d or miss -pt boats

some francis on the other hand just waltz in and miss a bb
Others come in, are slaughterd
9 betty come in -sink 2 MSW, get away
30 oscar Kamis pick on a single AK -3 hit her hard

His death star is 2 hexes south of Weda -near Moriatio -and 35 Kate commit suicide against 235 hellcats
Morotai is squashed by the death star -165 hits

If tabpub sailed the death star through the phillipines nothing would stop him -i hold my breath.
Man, having a fleet in being is SO GOOD

AK vs SS off palembang today -ss loses.

OK, we enter the second half of 44.
territory is shrinking.
My airforce is shattered - its pitiful how few planes I can muster.
BUT
The CV fleet is intact -and equiped
The BB fleet is still potent enough
I have all but a couple of CAs available
And enough DDs
The fleet has a few shots -at least one huge effort left in her

He bombs the usual places -liberators visit siapan for the first time.
His death star retires towards biak
I am squirrilling away planes -hammering dents out of the fleet.

41 zekes in the pool -just need another 500 or so.........
DS lurking off Hollandia -another invasion coming

Tabpub taking unhealthy interest in parishimio - I have plans for here......

57 zekes in the pool

Another invasion coming -hollandia/, biak?
I will not challenge it -the fleet must refit
probably 30 DDs just upgraded -so I have no escorts for at least a month./
A gamble -I am really gambling Tabpub will not leap into Siapan or the phillipines/DEI just yet.

Brunie is hit by B29s
parishimio -i lose the last zekes there, long range P38s win, liberators cannot close the field at this rate of ops though.
Death star strikes Woleai -cover for the PNG invasion I think.
Hollandia is naval bombarded

I sight a lot of ships at Attu -so I am dispatching a reception force north, a few planes -and as the fleet repairs -off they go.
Lets see what we can gather- I am sure if he invades parishimo it will have only a few CVs as cover -most are definately south -so maybe i have a chance to really give him a blood nose.
Lets see.

Sorong invaded!!!
No warning

Im trying to gather some sort of response -just to maintain the facade of mighty strength being husbanded.

have 5 frank daitai on the map, going to deploy first ones tomorrow -they constitute almost my entire LBA fighter strength.

Sad aint it!

The effort against Sorong is a fiasco -his heavy bombers pound the fields I deployed to -still checking A/F signs - and my 60 odd planes that all attacked were all shredded totally -corsairs about!

I have audited the CV fleet -on current repair rates -end of month and we are back to 100% strength.

If we are going to follow history time lines -I may have a fleet for Siapan (if he goes for it), definately one available for the phillipine battles ahead.

Actually do not think Siapan will be invaded -he is coming up from darwin/rabual axis -both axis have met at sorong -I now believe Davao is the ultimate target.
A thrust at the heart of the empire............

Tabpub tells me he thought yesterdays planes of mine must have been the 3rd raters, nope, they were the best i have

A ss of mine actually sinks a ml at sabang today

im typing one handed-on infinite hold here on the phone-our house got hammered by baseball size hail storm this week-no cars left, garage is swiss cheese-i had 36 brocken roof tiles-but 37 spare ones under the house!-so the roof is finally ok-looks like a patchwork quilt though!
trying to get through to insurance is a nightmare.

anyway-back to the war-tabpub hits taipei today with a p38 sweep- i lose 15 fighters to his 5 today
usual bombing in png, and i tried to defend wake today-15 nicks against the liberators-i lost more nicks than bombers shot down

82 zekes in pool

trying to gather franks at davao
fleet elements moving north as they repair.
major oil tanker convoys near legaspi.
its getting grim.

having second thoughts on parishimo- i will regather the fleet here as it repairs though, lots of troops now entering the area
tabpub lands more troops at dilli -again the guns tear into him
More sweeps of taipei - my resistance is almost finished
bangkok is getting hammered by the B-29s, and everything else

Still trying to rebuild the fleet
Still second thoughts on parishimio.

I see tabpub has started his AAR again -could someone really keep at him to keep updating it!

The oil convoy sails from legaspi -2 convoys actually - I sweep the area ahead with some 6 ASW groups -they sink a SS -but one tankers is sunk -and another lost to mines -so only 5 are left!

Invasion Biak!
This completes the loss of PNG
lasted about as long as I hoped for

Lots of ships north of malaya -I suspect the ballon is going to go up here

The plan for malaya is simply -he invades somewhere -ALL troops march to the sound of the guns -the army is lost here I suppose -we go down fighting -same as in indo china.

Invasion Wake!
tabpub rolloing really into gear

I survey the fleet -yes by months end all the CVs will be ready -the BBs will still be tired -the CAs are servicable
I will have a fleet , a real fleet, to deploy soon.

war is a bit slow at the moment
Im having my annual leave totally ruined trying to fix storm damage -hassles with windscreen repairs and insurance assessors
My garage had a asbestos roof -so now I don't have a garage at all -no one will go near it of course!
10/6/44
Biak invasion continues
wake falls -quickly -looks like tabpub has got this atoll invasion thingo worked out.
bangkok continues to be pounded

Little to order today -I actually am still upgrading Kates!

Biak falls
Invasion fleet near north malaya -where headed!

I fly quite a few kami Lilly units to the area
Some franks go to alert
Im going to get hammered i think, no signs of CV's though?

War going poorly -3 months ago I was in a strong position -the battles of the last months have brocken the back of my air forces, grrrrrrrrrr
The troops in malaya will march -all of them -to wherever he lands.

The battle of celebes sea erupts -the ASW groups and tanker convoys are in a bitter, bitter battle
So far I have lost 2 tankers, 3 escorts in 2 days, he has lost 3 SS -i think.
heavy bombers bomb taipei, and honkers
8 seperate waves of bombers over bangkok.
And the invasion lands at medan!

212 AV him, 74 me
I move what air I have into launch fields -Tabpub will be checking the A/F symbols Im sure -guess I will lose a lot of planes tomorrow -but I must try

On the grand strategy front -the entire fleet is now leaving various ports to gather at Hiroshima.
In about 5 days the fleet will sail for its final ride I feel.
I will contest Sorong/morotio? bases with the fleet, davao the LBA back up.
Time to finally fight.

Why now ? You will commit your fleet too far away from your ports.. Couldn't you wait ? The point of your fleet by now is not even to be used, just to slow him down by its very existence.

Hi Veji1 -nice to have a reply
You are of course exactly right
The trick is this -Tabpub has been advancing steadily under his LBA umbrella.
As he approaches Davao he will find himself coming out of it somewhat (I hope)
Im hoping to bite of a spearhead -yes, I will fight -the trick is not to lose anything!
Three months ago when I hit truk I really mucked up - I should have hit his invasion fleet.
But it proved to me that I can with care get into strike range for the surface ships.
Even with the lopsided naval battles japan has in mid 44 -surely 10 or so CA's, and 4 BBs could really hurt an invasion fleet.
This is the objective.
Finally -Im really sick of spending each turn getting hammered, and hammered for nearly 30 minutes of replay -then spending just 5 minutes looking at my stuff.
Time to plot evil plans of my own -more fun!
One final issue that you cannot see
Fuel
Lack of fuel
Soon I wont have enough to do anything!

13/14/15th of the 6th of 1944

By the mid days of June in 1944, Imperial high Command increasingly found itself trapped between impending disasters.
The empire was being steadily squeezed by two great allied thrusts, one south in Indo China, the other coming north from darwin, using the "back side" of PNG.
Both threatened the very cusp of the Empires main problem -oil supplies.
Landings at medan, put the entire malaya penisula under the shadow of the allied air power, and all new that once bangkok fell -as it must eventually one day -this would release a huge flood of allied troops into the Indo china front -siagon would quickly go -and the last oil fields relatively safe from allied bombing would fall under their shadow.

South -although the defenders on dilli were fighting the fight legends are made from -would soon also fall.

Finally, for the last 3 days a savage battle had been played out in the celebes sea.
9 tankers, in two convoys, escorted by some 7 seperate ASW groups, and close escorts, had sailed from legaspi, for tarakan and miri -and although 3 SS had been confirmed sunk, only 4 tankers were now loading with oil.
The only other tanker convoy -of 10 tankers, had just departed japan.

It was clear to all at HQ, that soon oil supplies would dry up, and soon fuel would go from critical to desperate.
During these 3 days, a major planning meeting took place at hiroshima.
Marked ominously by the first sightings of B-29s over Tokyo.
Each command gave their sitrep........
Army remained confident -bangkok it promised would last 2 more months, malaya as many again - plenty of time to get last convoys through.......
But what, it asked -could this contribute to actually giving Japan a honourable solution to the war?
Could it fight in the phillipines?, or Siapan
Yes -6 brand new full strength divisions had arrived , and were deployed.
The phillipines would be an ideal place to fight the final victory battle.

The Airforce all agreed was finished. despite some Kamikaze successes at medan -this could not be maintained.
What air strength remained -and it was pitiful -was now concentrated in the phillipines.
The new Franks held promise -3 groups were concentrated -with over 400 pilots -at davao
Could the Army get the division at Cebu to davao?
It would try.

Finally Navy spoke.
Of all the services, it remained in lethal shape -if it could play its cards right.
It remained concentrated in Home waters -desperately trying to repair the accumalated wear and tear of 18 months of hard sailing.
Fuel was the issue.

If enough could be gathered -if -one last effort could, would be made.
As there seemd little further need for the last 40-50 AP/AKs left to the empire -they were dispatched to all points, to gather fuel from wherever it could be found.
100000 tons of supplies -Japans last -were dispatched to legaspi -the phillipines would have enough for the battles ahead.

The facts were stark .
Fight now -and maybe keep the supply lines open -or not be able to fight in a short time.

The fleet began its plans -the decisive battle beconed.
All agreed, once the allies captured menando/weda or morotio , then the fleet must act.

But how?

From Commander Southern Area
to
Commander Phillipines area
Commander Java area
Commander Siapan defence zone.

Immediate status report of strengths available for "final annilihation battle" davao area to be reported to this command soonest.
Extravagant reports of actual strength are not helpful to this command
Commander davao area to report shipping needs for 102nd division cebu to davao to be reported to Combined Fleet immediately.

We have significant combat forces in this area -and an opportunity to crush an enemy at the end of an extended supply line, and outside his air power beckons.
Given bold action, aggressive fighting, we will inflict a defeat that will bring the Allies to their knees.

Operations room Hiroshima bay -Imperial Fleet command

" Then it is decided"
The Fleet dispositions will be as follows -God willing.
The main strike fleet will be built around Yammato and Mushia, Nagato and Mutsu, and Tanakas 7 CAs.
To get them into range, I propose a CAP fleet to escort. I am assigning CVEs Taiyo, Unyo, Chuyo, Shinyo, Kaiyo -approximately 135 zekes
Add to this Kaga, Akagi, and Taiho -, another 70 zekes, and 108 George fighters. They must get the capital ships into striking range. They can depart from here.

from sesabo Junyo, Hiyo, Chitose, Chiyoda, Ryojo will provide a strike force -I am very keen men to get the new grace torpedoe bombers onto these ships -they give us advantage of range.

From osaka the main strike fleet is to sail - Shokaku, Zuikaku, Hiryu, Soryu, Amagi, katsaguri, Unryu, the two battle cruisers.
I place great faith in the special attack squads onboard these ships

Now gentlemen - the decoy force at tokyo - CVL Ryuho, yamarishio and ise -they are to proceed south as soon as possible -i hear 15 knots is all they can give us.

Finally -the 2 CL/DD groups -they will follow -or should they lead - i suppose they must lead -the enemies use of layers upon layers of PT boats demands this.

Good, then i have decided
We refit and repair for as long as we can.
Commanders for the task forces?
to be decided.
Now, commander -fuel -how much can you gather me for say -the 25th of this month?, or, alternatively -say, 30 days from now?

The major imperial gathering at Hiroshima sent a wave actions through out the empire.
For months it had almost been passive in positive action, now it would make one last effort.

From
Gen Dohihara
Commander Southern Area Army
to
ADM Yammato
Combined fleet
CC
LGEN Sugahara
Commander 28th Army HQ Davao

Sir
Your orders to redeploy the majority of the forces I have under my command to Davao area i concur with -and will attempt to comply to

Forces currently in the soerabaya area include:
This command
4th division -100%
16th division -100%
I require approximately 40000 tons of AP lift, or nearly 250000 tons of AK lift to move these forces to davao -plus necessary naval cover

Further to this Tacobalan currently ccontains 55 division, and Cebu the new 102nd division
I further request transports for these units

Following this - if circumstances allow, a further lift of up to 3 divisions from Luzon, could be attempted

I honourably submit these transport requests to enable your final battle plans to be implimented fully.
If transports are not made available, I will not take any responsibility for any mis carriage of the plan

Further to your requests -davao forces under 28 army command currently consist of
31st division
100 division
47 Ind brigade
32 Ind brigade.
All are reported at 100%

I remain your humble servant
GEN Dohihara

from the personal diary of
Gen Dohihara.

Give up the very things we went to war for with out a fight!
Foolishness!
Utter Foolishness!
For what other reason do we have a navy for than to fight through the convoys .
40000 tons of lift!
or 250000 tons!
lets see Yammato provide that. -I very much doubt that he will.

The reports flowed in
Siapan command reported a quite satisfactory situation
Estimates of defensive strength were varied
Siapan -700 av
tinian -883 Av
guam -568 av

reports from the paluas were however worrying, Ulithi, yap, palua all were manned by only hodge podge of units, morotai and weda only by a Av regiment respectively -8000 men each
nevertheless, the thought that siapan would be avoided and the more "vulnerable" southern phillipines chosen by the allies instead seemed logical.
With little reluctance ADM Genda - 2nd air fleet at davao was informed, what air that was based in the marianas would be given to him.

Yammato smiles to himself

So Gen Dohihara thought he would wiggle out of this one

he surveyed the map, and nodded in satisfaction, a very fortunous series of events had given him a glimpse of hope

Deep in the maccassar straight some 20 AKs were in convoy -emty, and already headed towards soerabaya
Some 16000 tons of lift were available at davao
And 100000 tons of AK lift currently was unloading at legaspi
It was almost everything he had left, anything else was already at sea dispatched mainly to Korea -seeking fuel.
but it would be enough

ADM Genda at davao
This was good
Already he knew Genda was gathering what air lift he could to cebu....

finally there was convoy 16 -9times 4500 AP tonners -currently south of Tokyo -he would dispatch them to legaspi.

Gen Dohihama would get his divisions at davao -even if he did'nt think he wanted them or not...............

Thanks miller 41!
17/6/44
The empire shrinks a little more today, Dilli finally falls to tabpub

As part of the grand final defence plan ADM genda was given command of all the aircraft available within his spere of operations
With a radio capable of transmitting a mere 300 miles -350 at best -he was very careful to set himself up at davao
he could occasionally get further transmission capability from the navy -but "it was unreliable"
On paper the forces directly under his command at davao -or in the fields nearby, seemed adequate
640 fighters, 200 level bombers, and 130 torpedo and dive bombers, with a reserve capable of being flown in of another 200 fighters and bombers

but he knew it was just a paper tiger...
far too few -less than 100 were modern types, and against the allied might, he knew they would quickly melt away

There would be only one chance - a combined strike with the Navy -at the right moment .
Fortunately , in relation to the Combined fleet -Genda was about the only man they would listen too, or trust.
but the timing would be critical...................

Still desperately trying to russel up fuel for the fleet, and getting in last minute repairs.
Tabpub does not seem to be that keen to keep coming just yet, so Ill stay at home a little longer.
More bloody B-29s sneaking over japan at night -testing the waters, my night fighters are going to be as useful as a butterfly net i think

just a huge amount of bombing on bongkok, and the B-29s hit Kuala Lumper resources as well -which to me now means tabpub was bombing the moon.............
I sent 98 Frank, and 20 tony , escorting 27 Lilly to medan, they encountered 11 T bolts, and 11 spitfire
I lost 24 franks, and a tony -taking down 10 and 10
I will now return these franks to davao - weeded out the weaklings
