A couple of thoughts on what went wrong

1/ Going back to tarakan for what fuel I could get - I gather tabpub was going to come north anyway -but I may have been able to escape.
I tried to combine the fleets -but the second one seems to have decided to go to Djangles -2000 tons of fuel was there . -a combined fleet may have done better.

2/ Impatience cost me the war -the whole Timor thing was ill concieved and down right dumb -If Id waited a month with him stalled at woleai -a chance to overwhelm a part of his fleet may have offered.

3/ Expanding and building lots of carriers is fine -but if you capture no oil - how the hell are they going to operate!!!

4/ What to do now?
I have 4 judy units on map -a couple of bomber units, some shattered fighter units, and thats about it -all these in the phillipines
The home islands have about a dozen fighter units, six or so bomber units -none full -and the battleships.
If I get the CA's away -I might -i think tabpub will swing after the oil convoy near legaspi -I still have some sort of surface groups -but not much.

The army is the only thing left - quite a few troops poised near davao -in davao ect -this must be his next landing -and soon!

Any one out there got any clues on blockade runners????

If he has high experience 4E bombers on naval search, blockade runners are in trouble.  They seem to hit just about everything.

If you can thread your way through his subs and his search planes, they might have a chance.

Hello,

Let me first start by saying that Herbie ranks #1 in my book for having to deal with all the problems and such from the program; such as the disappearing divisions, the pilot pool overflow and the kamikazes striking landbases and the like; yet he soldiered on and put the best face on these things that he could.

Now, we come to the Celebes Sea and the loss of the IJN carrier component. I had been following the progression of his carriers along the coast of Borneo (by the repeated sightings of my subs by his carrier air). I figured that they were heading North to the Formosa Straits on their way home to Japan; so I had set groups of subs to cover that route. But when subs in the Sulu Sea area reported carrier air sightings there, I figured that he was going to make trouble for the landing at Mendano; so the carrier TG's at Sorong sortied to cover that area.

Now, as I recall, all that came into the area was a small surface task group that did some damage to a couple of freighters carrying supplies and CB units which were pretty much wiped out by airstrikes the next day by carrier and land units. But his carriers were seen to be hanging back near Tarakan with a heading to that port, so this indicated that he was low on fuel and seeking to replenish there; I wished to proceed up there the next day, but my groups were low on fuel also and dropped back to rendezvous with my oilers near Mendano. The next day, they were ordered to proceed up into the Celebes Sea as deep as they could to intercept them; I thought that he would proceed at full speed into the Sulu, but as you will have seen he was unable to.

You have seen most of the combat reports on this, so I won't go over them again. After the second days strikes, Bunker Hill was damaged by a search bomber, so her group left the area; the other 3 split up to cover an arc near the following ports, Tarakan-Jolo-Davao. During this day, surviving ships were found and struck including the last of the fleet carriers Taiho and Katsuragi(sp) off Davao harbor.

As I mentioned to Herbie in an email, I know that he would have preferred to use his carriers at a time of his choosing to interfere and damage my next landing; but, this was one of the very few times in the last two years where our carrier groups have been in close proximity to each other and that I have not been tied to covering an ongoing landing with my carrier groups. This freed me to make a move against his fleet without worry of him striking at loaded shipping with combat troops aboard.

The Woleai situation would have been a better place for his fleet carriers to come and try to damage me, as I had no closer base than Truk, 500 miles away. But, Woleai would not have happened if his carriers had not been operating in the Timor/DEI area at that time.
With them there, Woleai was landed on to secure my shipping lanes from Truk to Sarmi/Biak on New Guinea; my error on Woleai was using two Army Divisions to land there, they don't have the engineer assault value that Marine divisions have and got hung up on stronger than anticipated resistance. 1st Marine Division was then loaded for Woleai to land there, but I neglected to have the already landed units ordered to attack on the day of their landing. So, they attacked alone and achieved no result; they have been withdrawn and a siege ensues there. When 1st Mar is recovered a bit, they will have another go at it later on.

During the entire Pacific campaign, I have been following along the lines of RK Turners April 1942 initial war plan; which called for converging attacks by Central and South toward the Truk/Rabaul area and then along the NG coast toward the Philippines. Operations in Timor or the Aleutians were merely diversionary or flank guards.
Now, the success of the Anglo-Indian armies on the Burma/Indochina front have certainly helped the cause of the entire war; not only due to their attrition on IJ air/ground assets, but by allowing American air units to operate to cover the South China Sea, channeling shipping toward submarine concentrations. And now with the control of the supply line from Rangoon/Bangkok to China, "Matterhorn" (old code name for bombing campaign from China) can now be envisioned. To date, only 2 or 3 groups have been used against the Home Islands in a sporadic manner; 5 more groups are in Asia at this time resting to join the 3 in China, when they do, we hope to see 4 groups per strike package over the factories of Japan. Whether they can get good results without fighter support will be seen....
I will now go to work on the turn and read some of the older pages in this AAR (I have gotten thru page 3, love reading some of the early war stuff from 2 years ago....I had forgotten some of it....and seeing what Herbie thought of what was going on...).

The debacle continues

Its soooooooooooo painful.
A troop conoy is sunk by his CVs in the celebes sea.
4 heavy cruisers -Mogami, mikuma, suzaya, Ashigara are pounded by CV air, and liberators -hao I hate those planes - these cuisers are caught with no Ops points -having refuelled at last. So the fuel goes down with them as well!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
CVL Chiyoda must post a record for hits - double grrrrrrrrrrr

To the north east of Legaspi -the tanker convoy -the whole purpose of this sorry tale -is abandoned by its escorts -they flee to Japan -as a CV task force comes North.
Tomorrow I will have every fighter left not in the Home islands over Jolo - there are still warships here -I will fight on!

7th of the 9th 44
Ever reached a stage in a game where it all just gets so awful you wonder what could possibly go wrong next?
thats this moment!
B-29s over nanchang
CA Chikuama -torped by a ss north of Jolo
CVs katsaguri and Taiho both sunk , finished off at davao by a deluge of bombers
CA maogami south of manilla -and a DD, smashed by Liberators flying from China

Another big CV strike at the ships at Jolo -the CAP tries hard -42 george, 42 zeke - it goes down in flames - well they are low 30's experience -and CAs haguro, ashigara are sunk

I have 60 bombers attack him -6 get through! -and miss 2 enemy CVs.

The empires defences have collapsed -totally.
Will any thing escape?

Just a note as well -the pilot bug continues - it steals pilots again and again -I give up on trying to do anything with pilots -average experience is about 40 now for all units!

i have about 300 planes, all types scattered through the phillipines -all basically fragments
As the last ships try for the North -some fuel is at legaspi now -some -not much -but we will go for it - these planes begin the hops north, trying to cover the retreat
tabpub -low on op points he says -retires -but it wont be for long

189 B-29 hit matsue -the CAP shoots down 6

RUN AWAY!!!

If i get anything out of this fiasco i will re assess my options once in the home islands - but first its save what I can - CHINA air forces are the big menace -reaching now to the phillipines -and hitting anything that floats.

9/9/44
We continue to run away

Battle for Malaya entering final stages too.

CV Franklin hits a mine -thats nice

B-29s over the home islands -night raid at 6000 feet!
51 hits on Kitakushu -and the night fighters could do little

Worse news -enemy CVs racing north into Phillipne sea -cutting them of from the home islands
The vice is closing -CA nachi and 3 DDs are blown into pieces by Liberators operating from japan at Aparri - I hate heavy bomber naval attack - but I think in late 44 its a fair thing -it happened IRL

Mallacca falls in Malaya - no news escapes from there

11/9/44
It gets worse -the CVs park off Aparri -while another TF parks of Legaspi
I have 6 trapped CA in the phillipines left -trying to get fuel to dash home.
I will send them to Manilla for the dash home
His CVs are busy today sinking wrecks, cripples, PGs, MSWs, whatever has had the bad luck to be in range

12/9/44

I get fuel from the fuel convoy at legaspi - His northern group of CVs has moved up towards Okiwana!, the other one still a bit south of legaspi -maybe there will be a break in the traffic -and I can dash home!

13/9/44
NOPE!
I flee towards manilla, while 40 odd fighters and some Kamis smash against his CAP .
I have all the george fighters I have in the phillipines -4 units worth -but experience is shot!

14/9/44
Well, there is no escape -his CVs come right intothe Luzon bay area -and attack my ships in Manilla
despite 60 CAP -he blasts through -CURSES!!!
Chikuma , Mogami,Tone, Suzaya all hit hard

I have no choice, the survivors will dash to the pescadores -and hope the liberators won't get them

I am pulling out the remnants of my air back to the HI - then a re assessment!

The great defeat continues -but I wil fight on

With no other choice -the surviving ships dash for home around the top of the phillipines -while the cvs remain and continue to sink my merchant and small ships around legaspi

Luck ain't with me.........
the liberators come in -and so do the p40ns -but its manily straffing, and 500lbs bombs
Kumano, Mikuma, tone -are all hit -multiple bombs -but at the end they can still do 28 knots -they may make it at last!

And just to show what might have been if the pilot bug had not come - 63 oscars at legaspi escort 11 jills into a navy attack from Aparri

all oscars die against the 53 hellcats -but 8 jills get through -and 3 torps into BB washington
Nice.

I am now finally all but have air forces all back into home islands - will soon after a bit of a re organisation begin to shuttle them into the phillipines - I fight on!

AFTER A FEW COMPUTER PROBLEMS -WE RE COMMENCE

The cruisers may make the dash -they are not attacked today as they skirt the south of formosa -I hope they will make the home islands tomorrow -bad weather in China today!

Tabpub continues bombing all over the map - kendari looks like the next invasion target, and his CVs head south towards Legaspi again -where he keeps hitting cripples and the like
I lose 4 PC/PG/MSW to SS today -and about 6 more crippled ships.

The great return to Japan of scattered air groups continues -but a reverse flow back to the phillipines of groups restored and re built has begun -all my Zeke reinforcements have been turning up as AM3a's -as the zeke pool is empty -but I had about 300 AM3a's left -so at least this feature is working

At the experience level these guys are though -plane model won't make much difference!

In manilla 3 crippled cruisers are still pumping out water, putting out fires ect -the next mission -get them home!

The invasion of the phillipines cannot be far away - I need 2 weeks to re organise I think -then I hope to offer at least some resistance
Also, the blockade runners have to begin -this could be fun -not!

A small crumb of comfort as the CA's reach the home islands -safe? for a while!
129 B-29s bomb Osaka at night -62 manpower hits -nasty -the CAP is non existant!
usual bombing in malaya -down south

Blockade runners dispatched.

I begin to load 3 brigades and 2 full divisions in the home islands -for the phillipines -its a lst effort to get them there.

18/9/44

129 B-29s attack again tonight -Osaka again -121 manpower hits!!!

19/9/44

Southern phillipines -he begins to bomb davao -, and the convoys sail
Another 3 heavily damaged CA's get away from Manilla -can I get them home too?
I have a pipeline of planes coming into the phillipines - an effort to get it done -but I hope to at least keep the invasion honest!

tabpub tells me -here comes trouble -as if i ain't in it deep enough now!
I am using Okiwana as a stepping stone to the phillipines for air groups transitting north and south -today liberators from China visit -its painful -watching the liberators shoot down zeros -lost 6 in the air to the bombers today!

I keep sending planes south -invasion phillipines is coming.

Lots of B-29 raids over japan at night -I do have some LRCAP nightfighters -they have little impact

davao is bombed -and here comes the southern philipine invasion -several huge fleets are coming north!

Almost on cue - Woleai has fallen at last to the extra marines who finally cracked the defences. bummer.

Examination of defences - Djangles, 1 and a half divisions - davao -4 divisions, and Cotabo? to the north of davao -3 divisions of troops.
It will be a Djangles landing -all I can do is hope the troops can keep him tied down for the next month or so.
the fleet cannot sail -still too little fuel to do so.

man -this is hopeless -today I had the majority of the air power i have in the area attack -
mostly Jackc-at 50 experience -the best i have got now -and nothing returned to the airfields at all -and no allied planes shot down iether!

Cursed stock air routines!
Mind you 300 hellcat CAP aint going to be penetrated iether!

very depressed, the high command pulls the air groups back -and waits for an opening.

25 and 26th of Sept 44

Well there are only 2 things to relate now -as the empire is shrinking rapidly.
The invasion of Djangles continues -about 6 or 7 divisions of troops are coming ashore -all under the masive CAP cover he can bring

Im prostrate against the power of this invasion -and the rest of the phillipines are now really exposed -basically a lack of supplies and AV support -I had to take some home to defend the home islands

Both nights B-29's and now Black widows are operating over the home land -my night fighters are now intercepting OK -just not scoring any hits

I have moved about 200 fighters into the phillipines north -just going to wait another 2 days -and hopefully his planes might be a bit tired.

3 divisions are enroute to Aparri - most of my turn involves plotting the ASW escorts, and LRCAP - so far so good -halfway there !

Oh -the british CV's have declared the south China sea theres -are swanning around miri -hunting -they sunk 3 pg today.
Nothing left to sink south of Manilla now!

B-29's over tokyo tonight - not too much harm done.

he has over 500 carrier aircraft over Djangles today -plus LBA attacking -iots endless replay time!
yet the first attack today only reduces the forts to 6.
It will fall tomorrow - and the phillipines are in terrible peril now!

British CV's swanning around in the south china sea -hit tay tay.

Aparri recieves a LBA visit - my cap did OK, but a PG is sunk.

well yesterday was crud -today was a little better
71 superforts make a daylight attack on japan today -and meet 20 george and 17 tony -none over 40 experience - and yet for 3 fighters i take out 17 forts, about time we shot some down.

t bolts begin ops in the southern phillipines
3 divisions arrive at naga - under heavy CAP -It will be good to get them, and all the supplies they have , ashore.

47 units reported Djangles

And here comes invasion palua islands!

So, fleet still off davao -another smaller one coming to palua.
And surely his planes are getting tired -and not all fields are suppressed..

Well tabpub notes all the suddenly filled airfields -and takes advantage.
Of all the features of WITP -the instant knowledge of occupied fields -this surely is the one AE must address..........

Naval bombardment davao - carnage!!!! -100 plus planes destroyed
Cebu field attacked -more planes destroyed

But not all fields can be suppressed
Biggest day of the war......................

120 fighters, 30 bombers attack his CVs - 140 CAP
I lose THE LOT -he loses 16

14 judy kamis -2 hit msw -it sinks
20 fighters, 20 bombers - all s/d
2 oscars, 21 judy, 7 helen -all kamis -1 helen gets through -and rams a AK
32 zeke -all lost
19 sally attack -and hit 2 AK
9 lilly attack -2 ram the BB penny -and bounce off

then over near YAP
40 fighters, 3 betty -20 CAP -2 betty survive -and miss

Then off palua- 29 oscar escort 40 kami zeke and 7 betty -and the 66 fighter CAP fails to stop them

CVE kadashima bay?? - 1 torp -3 kami hits!
CVE Nehenta bay? - 2 kamis -ammo explosion!!
CVE Rudyerd bay? - 1 kami -heavy damage!

And in the south china sea -enemy CVs beat off an attack - but I sink 1 DD, 2 AK with Sonias!!!! near davao.

The cost

44 planes lost for him
655 for me

(thats more than I am building for 6 months -so we can see where this war is headed)

I was pleased about my timing -man -if i had experienced pilots (pre bug that is) -and oil..........

well done japanese electrons -a classic defence

China -the front has collapsed -and vast numbers of Japanese troops are trapped - cursed zone of control! -6 divs trapped at Hsingyang

getting to the stage now that I just fast forward the replays -too many bombs -too many ships, too many disasters

Still, I am getting my planes ready in the home islands for another effort -we fight on!
