I have been trying to lay mines in my own (Japanese) harbors for many turns now without success. I am following the manual's procedure of setting my minelayers (MLs) on Retirement with a destination and home port of the base they are in. I have even set to NOT REFUEL. They are not docked. The bases are of sizes from 1-6. I thought my mines would show up in display of the base hex if laid, but nothing is appearing (no mine symbol either).

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Mines can be loaded on minelayers only from 9-10 size ports. Or a port with an MLE and double the required supplies in it

You have to refuel from a 9 or better port. Or, one with an MLE, Allies only.
To check your ML's. Refuel them, then click on the ship for it's data. See if the mines are red. If it is, then you don't have any loaded. Mines will show up on the base screen if it is a freindly port.

I think the Home Port can't be the same as the Destination, otherwise it will just sit in port like any other idle TF.

Set the Minelaying mission. Set the Home Port to some other port and the Destination to the port you wish to mine. I don't think you need to let it move out of the port first.
Then let the TF lay its mines. Once it finishes (starts to sail back to "Home Port", set the Home Port back to the port to reload from.
The manual seems to talk about a ML mission in other than a home port.

That's the ticket.

Halsey, it's ADs that IJ doesn't get. That's why I cried so hard when you sank one of my three on December 10!

Yes, they work like a charm for Japan as well. There was a problem with the early versions of the game, were japanese MLE conversion were never built (always stayed at 180 days).
By now I have MLEs in Rabaul, Kwajlein, Davao, ...

Thanks, the MLs were full of mines, just not laying them

As earlier noted, my MLs had a full complement of mines (loaded in Tokyo), just not laying them. Seems a later thread addresses this. Thanks!

Ah! That must be the trick. I'll try it tonight. Thanks!

Also, just be advised that the "number of mines" does not show up on ports that are only size zero. The mine indicator (little do in upper left) is set, but the number of mines doesn't show on the base screen until it's a size one or better port. The mine -are- there however, but like I said, just not indicated on the actual base screen.

Yes, I remember reading that in the manual. But all my attempts were in at least size 1 or better ports. Thanks!

Historical note to all -- this SOLVED the problem. In one day, just laid 1,540 mines in a Size 1 port

I've had my minelaying subs hunting for a base with mines. They laid their load and needed a refill. No mines in Truk, so we went and visted Oska and Toyko. No mines there either. How can I tell if a port has mines to refill my subs ?

It needs to be size 9 or 10, or have an MLE in it, and it needs to have "sufficient" supplies (my guess is that means it's supply number on the base screen is not in the red).

With Submarine Minelayers, you have to disband the TF, and then create a new Sub Minelaying TF in order for it to load mines. I know, it's wierd, but I do belive it is mentioned in the manual. It has been like this since UV...

Don't get confused about the "mines" number at the top of the base screen. This is the number of mines which are present in the base's defenses. The only thing a large port needs is supplies. THe mines are in there. Go to the port with ML - dock (if necessary) - hit "replenish from port" - the mines should then show up in the ammo readout of the ship (clik on the ship itself, not in the TF screen).

Sometimes (rarely) it is necessary to disband the ML TF and then reform it - the ML should then have mines loaded loaded. THis is GENERALLY true with submarine mine layer TFs.

Another method with subs is to change the TF type to Sub Patrol or Sub Transport then replenish. Then change it back to Sub Minelayer and then replenish. This works but may in fact not be any quicker

As soon as I get one back to base, I'll advise. Already sent them back out for recon purposes.

Yes, disbanding or changing the mission then replenishing got the logistic boys on the dock to give up the mines. Interesting that a sublaying capable sub in port requesting replenishment can get everything BUT mines. While given any other mission and the supply sargent supplies all the mines you need. Guess the supply network in the game is about as efficient as it is in real life (and makes as much snese)
