Thats the easy one. I think he's asking about that thingy in the background. When I saw that it reminded me of the "Duncan" from that Jules Verne story about Capt. Grant (forgot what its called in English).

AX would make sense - that would be an auxillary. AK is generally a 5000+ transport.

Anything "-X" is planned or projected (remember CVX?), so an AX would be a planned auxiliary. I like IX - unclassified auxuliary.

D@mn! She's apparently still around - from http://www.enterpriseintegrators.com/flint/HistoryOfShips/
Flint School Ships:

"The Black Douglas kept it's name and it's hull and little else for war time service. In 1942 a new 600HP turbo-charged Enterprise Engine from Seattle, Washington was installed. The large deckhouse structure was added with a gun on the bow. The masts and bowsprit were removed, also. Unlike TeVega, the sails didn't contribute that much to speed. The Black Douglas' basic configuration was not altered much until 1972.

"Designation: PYc-45 Black Douglas IX-55 Black Douglas Class" It had a class of it's own.

"HULL 131 BLACK DOUGLAS
3-Masted Staysail Auxiliary Schooner Yacht for Robert Roebling.
150'long, 32'beam, 17'-7 1/2"depth, 12'draft, displacement 331 light ship, 416 full load, 3-masted staysail schooner with 2 auxilary diesel engines, 325 horsepower, masts reaching 116' above deck, 9111 sguare feet of canvas, 60 tons of ballast. Keel laid November 22,1929, launched June 9,1930, delivered July 29,1930. Transferred to the United States Navy in 1942 for World War II. Designated PYc-45 and assigned to submarine duty off the Pacific Northwest coast. Returned to owners October 1944. Later to United States Fish and Wildlife Service as a research vessel. To Bureau of Fisheries in 1960 as a research vessel."

Eventually renamed teQuest.

Shown below in 1949. In 1972 apparently partially restored to a sailing schooner.

LMAO here - great post!
Alternative Title: "Saving Private Ryan from The Pirates of the Caribbean"
Opening sequence: Johnny Depp waving cutlass drunkenly overhead. Pan to Matt Damon. Voiceover, Tom Hanks saying "Earn This!", Damon draws his .45 auto and charges up the gangplank...

Too much caffeine, you think?

Steve.

Problems with the IX-55 Black Douglas id:

The description states she is a 3 masted vessel. Here is a picture of her before the war:

Anyway - as you can see from the photo above, the Black Douglas appears to be a much larger vessel. Not to mention the three masts.

So - did AKs have sailing sloop auxillaries? I don't remember of ever hearing of this.

EDIT: Hey, Ron, maybe this is one of those ship's boats that haul the cargo to shore when there are no docks!

Perhaps a sister ship to the USS Joanna, (I'm just showing off), this could be a US Army cargo ship, or possible anyone of a number of schooners used to haul cargo in the South Pacific, possible New Zeland or Austrailian.

Right..so you convinced me it isnt the Black Douglas

That leaves several possibilities:

1) The Hull number isn't 55...maybe 95?

2) The designation isnt AX

3) It isnt USN...mayb RAN or RN???

My guess would be one of the australian army small ships (during WW2 43 Army craft were allocated the AK prefix, 38 Ketches and five Schooners).

The Abel Tasman maybe?

Do you mean USS Lanikai?

The lines seem wrong. Great story though. When in the service of the USN..she had a 3 in rifle. Perhaps she was modified (likely)

Sounds good - an Australian schooner.

Any good sources for Australian WW2 army ships? (This sounds like an oxymoron)

This is the best "name that" thread yet. I tried web searching with "95" and various other keywords but didn't find a close match. (That doesn't mean it's not 95, though). It is definitely not AK95, the USS Murzim. Also wondered about the U.S. Army "ghost fleet" cargo ships - it could be one of those or one of many former private/merchant ship converted for service in the USN (and other navies, too, I would imagine).

Somebody mentioned the masts - I guess one could have been removed but this looks like it's supposed to have two masts.... Any guesses as to the location of the photo?

I'm still stumped/intrigued.

Well, there is an IX-95 Echo - a New Zealand "scow", built 1892, transferred to Navy under reverse lend-lease (?), delivered cargo at Noumea en route to Efate in New Hebrides. Based on this island at Port Vila, she served as a supply ship for the Army in the New Hebrides and adjoining island group. - (returned to NZ 12 March 1944).

Hyperwar calls her "a converted yacht: 340 tons" which about fits this ship, i think.

Well, despite doing multiple searches on Google, etc., i can't find a picture of IX-95 Echo. Anyone have a 1943 edition of Jane's around? Maybe that has a picture of her. But since she was a transport, not a "fighting ship", maybe not.

Unfortunately, the descriptions of this ship are rather meager - aside from tonnage, "scow", "converted yacht", and "screw scow". This could take in a lot of ships.
