-A big formation of 50 heavies attacked Lae at extended range. Lost 6 B-24 while the enemy lost 4 Vals (destroyed in the ground). No losses among the 6 Zeros that intercepted the heavies. Iīve been noticing the B-24 seems to be unrealistic vulnerable, and this could explain the heavy bomber losses to Zeros. Japan lost another sub and starving Japanese troops suffered heavy losses at Tulagi
-Other issues:
1-mapr complains that the new AF system seems to put Japan at disadvantage. I think that itīs also a significant disadvantage for the allies, since they will take much more time to build size 4 AF. I think I will take at least 2-3months to take PM to size 4 and 4 months to take Lunga to size 4. Anyway, I think a tweak to USA engineers could be implemented in v0.52
2-I donīt think the new scenario is more balanced for Japan (the stock Guadalcanal is heavily biased againt the IJN). New changes will include more aircraft replacements for Japan and more worsening of ASW capabilities

More heavy bombers destroyed by the heroic pilots at Lae, now, 6 Zeros shot down 3 B-17īs (one Zero destroyed in the ground). This was a day withouth much activity, both sides are curing their wound, I think.....

-Another raid against Lae this time the allied bombers were escorted by Beaufighters and P-40īs from PM. One Zero, 2 B-17īs and 1 P-40 lost in air combat (intel data). No grounded planes destroyed. Near Guadalcanal, it seems a IJN sub was hit by a CV based plane.

-Lost 5 B-17 (4 to Zeros, 1 to flak) and 2 P-40īs (both to Zeros). One of my B-17īs shot down a Zero. Only 5 planes attacked the airfield, the remaining fled like rabbits.....morale down to 28 for the B-17 sqadron involved. Those raids are too costly and results are poor. Iīm considering to increase durability of heavy bombers in this game. It seems both combat losses and efficiency is too high for 4E bombers, if I fix one itīs reasonable to fix the other too....

-No attacks made by my 4e bombers. Theyīre resting and losses are being replaced. At least we took less losses than the replacement rate for these planes in August. The Japanese sub force achieved another sucess after being badly beaten near Guadalcanal. One of my AKīs was heavily damaged. Not sure if it will sink or not....

-Balance sheet: first month

1-The new base size system seems to decrease significantly land based operations in small scenarios. I dont know what will happen in the bigger ones
2-The changes introduced in the ASW didnīt work well. Itīs possible, however, that subs could be useful against crippled warships and poorly escorted convoys. They can sink undamaged warships (2 DD and 1 CA lost to IJN subs) but at a very high cost (12 IJN subs lost)
3-Too early to say Iīm happy with heavy bombers. They need an increase in durability, particularly the B-24, but it seems the changes in payload worked (however, they werenīt able to fly missions with full payload due to the small size of PM)
4-Betties didnīt achieve too much but mapr has been cautious with them. For some strange reason, they seem to fly antiship missions armed with bombs instead of torpedos (this saved my cruisers at Guadalcanal)
5-A lot of things must be tweaked. I need to adjust the logistics, maybe decrease the number of aircraft support crews for USA (to simulate higher requirements from bigger aircraft), increase the aircraft replacements for Japan, increase a little bit the range of the A6M3 (to allow them to fly escort missions from Rabaul to PM, or were they unable to do so?), create replacements for Japanese land equipment.

-Some ASW action....allied ships bombarding enemy troops in Tassafaronga. Iīm not willing to allow Japanese troops in Guadalcanal. Almost no action over New Guinea...Score show a draw (1685 for Japan vs 1600 for allies). It seems the capture of Guadalcanal could be enough to give a victory to the allies (if they expand the base enough)? Let us see what happens....

-A disastrous day for the allies. My surface ships didnīt arrive on time to protect a small transport fleet unloading troops in Guadalcanal. Result was the lost of 2DDīs, 2 PGīs, 1 PT and 1 AP. Fortunately the bombardment itself was ineffective. My PT boats were able to put a fish in a Japanese heavy cruiser, but it wasnīt enough to place him in the range of my CV planes in the following day. A massive attack of heavy bombers against Lae results in the lost of 5-B-17īs, while the enemy lost 2 Zeros and 1 Val destroyed in the ground. It seems things will become hotter from now. Another night raid with G4Mīs against PM resulted in 3 losses for Japan and no losses for us.

-The enemy attacked a TF unloading troops and supplies in PM with Zeros and Betties. Results were disastrous for the Japanese. No less than 16 Betties (13 A2A, 3 Flak) and 14 A6M2 (All A2A) were lost. Allied losses were only 9 planes. One AP and one MSW sunk, another transport heavily damaged. The performance of the A6M2 in long range escort missions is simply abysmal.....meanwhile the remains of the transport group decimated yesterday were finally able to disembark survivors in Guadalcanal.

PM was hit again by Vals from Lae, this times heavily escorted by A6M3. Fighting at their normal range, the Zeros had little troubles in wiping out the inferior allied fighters. The allied lost no less than 31 fighters over PM. However, the Japanese also paid a heavy price for their victory, losing 20 Zeros and 4 of their precious Vals. The heavy losses for Vals flying from Lae will put troubles to the Japanese when they start to use their carriers.
The allied High command intends to close Lae as soon as possible. Medium and heavy bombers will be sent to PM when the improvements in PM airfield are done.

Another bombardment session by IJN surface ships and Iīve learned that Gilli gilli cannot be defended. This raises obvious questions on to what point it is possible to keep Port Moresby too. In the standard Guadalcanal scenarios, the B-17īs from Australia can impose some damage to IJN warships attempting to bombard PM, not to mention B-25īs and B-26īs operating from PM. But in this mod...who knows??? Of course there is always another alternative....
And, of course, more subs sank, one of them is the S-40 that was being repaired in Gilli gilli.....

-The Death Star 2 (as powerful as the Death Star destroyed in Midway, but unable to operate out of LBA range) gave Gilli gilli a rest. On the other hand, PM now have a 4 size airfield....in a few days, level bombers will start an offensive against the enemy bases in New Guinea. Unfortunately, I have few fighters to escort these bombers....meanwhile, Japan lost another sub....

-Second day of offensive against Lae. B-26īs achieved nothing, but a huge 4E bombers raid from Australia destroyed no less than 18 planes in the ground (12 Zeros and 6 Vals). More two Zeros destroyed in air to air combat and two B-17īs lost.
-My note: Despite flying at extended range and with 55% additional decrease in payload, 4E bombers still did a lot of damage.

-Meanwhile, USN DDīs still hunting the remnants of the once powerful Japanese submarine force......

-Heavy bombers had a rest today for repair of damaged planes. The task of locking down Lae was handed to B-26īs, which didnīt perform very well. Three B-26īs and one P-39 were shot down, with no losses for Japan. Some hits in the base instalations. Another IJN sub lost. Planes from Lae attacked ships at PM with a few losses to each side.

-The allied commanders are quite dismissive of the offensive power of G4Mīs, given their poor performance (up to now) in the campaign, even if heavily escorted. Todayīs events forced us to rethink the situation, as 50 Betties with heavy escort decimated an convoy at Port Moresby. The depleted fighter groups at PM were able to shot down 7 Zeros, 3 Betties and 2 Vals in this terrible day, but 6 P-39īs and 5 P-40īs were lost to enemy fighters. Fortunately, the enemy seems to be short of longer range A6M2 and Lae is becoming a dangerous place for A6M3īs.

-A huge surface fleet was located by our recon planes. Instead of executing the usual bombardment in Gilli gilli, the enemy ships moved to a position 300 miles east from Port Moresby. A night bombardment run is expected for the next night. A desperate attempt to stop the enemy ships was made by B-26īs and Beaufighters from Port Moresby, withouth success, now PM is defenseless against the enemy force. The enemy attempt to lock down PM inaugurates a new chapter in this campaign, since the imperial navy seems to have given up Guadalcanal.

-The feared bombardment of Port Moresby didnīt materialize...what happened is that the enemy TF was detected one day before I posted the bad news, and so I have time to move a small TF with 4 CVīs just to 3 hexes from the expected location of the enemy ships after their bombardment mission. It seems the Japanese commander noticed this small detail and decided to cancel the mission.....but now itīs Guadalcanal that is exposed to a night bombardment, as a lot of IJN surface ships were seen in Shortland. My guess is that the enemy now will use his fast battleships to shut down the Henderson field.

-The IJN achieved a sounding victory in the what will be named the first Guadalcanal naval battle. Their superior forces sunk 8 DDīs and one CA, plus another crippled DD sunk by a submarine. No Japanese ship was lost, althought three CAīs were heavily damaged. USN CVīs were in position to attack the returning Japanese ships, but the Kongos are invulnerable to the 500lb bombs carried by the SBDīs while the TBFīs achieved nothing. Fortunately, the bombardment of Henderson field was largely ineffective. Guadalcanal will be a dangerous place for the next weeks, it seems.....

-After their poor performance yesterday, the USN Carrier crews dispatched one heavy cruiser, two destroyers and one minelayer today. The warships were struggling to return to their bases after the Guadalcanal naval battle. The minelayer was quietly doing his job in Vella Lavella when he was surprised by a few SBDīs. So the result of the naval battle is: 1 CA 2 DD lost for IJN and 1 CA and 9 DD(!) lost for USN. Meanwhile, B-26 from Port Moresby were able to sink more two Japanese transports. It was a great day for the allies!!!!
