SITUATION REPORT: 1-17-42

CHINA:

IJA and Chinese manuever to surround each other. "Mother of All Battles" to occur in about a week.

MALAYA:

Allies retreat to their final defensive positions in Johore Bharu and Singapore. The Allies have retreated in good order and Johore Bharu will prove extremely difficult for the IJA to capture. Singapore is not only more impregnable but is well supplied and could provide an airbase for future Allied OFFENSIVE operations.

JAVA/SUMATRA:

NO Japanese operations possible for sometime without direct support of KB. Modern Allied bombers and fighters are staging in from SWPAC on a daily basis.

DEI:

Swordfish from Tarakan put 3 torpedoes in CA Mogami off Brunei. Over 30 Martin 139s and 25 Swordfish and Beaufort V-IX escorted by 25 P-40Es are positioned to attack Japanese shipping at Brunei weather permitting. Almost 80 A6M2 on CAP at Singkawang prevent Allied attacks on shipping there.

PI:

Japanese capture Puerto Princessa and invade Taytay. 2 Squadrons of Beaufort V-IX are positioned to attack shipping there tomorrow. Japanese infiltrate Clark airfield and the US Army and Philippinos prepare for a desperate counterattack tomorrow.

SITUATION REPORT: 1-18-42

CHINA:

Japanese reinforce their position 60 mi west of Changsha and now have over 100,000 troops attempting to cut the road and isolate the city.

DEI/PI:

Allied counterattack at Clark is repulsed with heavy losses as Japanese reinforce with almost 90,000 troops. The Allied are now outnumbered 97,000 to 45,000 there.

Japanese capture Taytay.

Allied bombers score hits on Japanese shipping off Brunei and Taytay. With over 25 Swordfish and Beauforts escorted by P-40Es set to strike IJN ships at Brunei only 3 Swordfish flew so damage was minimal.

SITUATION REPORT: 1-23-42

CHINA:

Chinese shock attack on encircled Japanese forces at Kweilin is repulsed with heavy casualties. The Chinese troops will need to regroup before resuming their attack.

PI:

Japanese shock attack is held off at Clark with minimal Allied damage. It will take the Japanese awhile to wear down Allied supply here.

MALAYA:

Virtually the entire Japanese army in Malaya is at Johore Bharu and their bombardment attack was completely ineffective. The Allied counterbattery fire indeed caused more damage.

DEI:

The Allies have quietly massed over 120 B-17s, 30 B-25s and 5 squadrons of Beaufort V-IX in Java and Sumatra over the last 6 weeks. Today marked the start of the 1st Allied bomber offensive to achieve air superiority in the DEI.

100 B-17s and Martin 139s hit Singkawang while another 85 B-17s and B-25s bombed Kuching. Singkawang is now 31% damaged and Kuching appears to have been abandoned. 30 Japanese fighters and bombers were destoyed at a cost of 1 B-17 and 3 Martins plus some obsolete fighters.

SITUATION REPORT: 1-24-42

BURMA:

1st Burma Brigade tries to hold the river crossing west of Mandalay but is brushed aside by the IJA Imperial Guards Division in a shock attack. Mandalay now prepares for the imminent major assault.

PI:

122,000 IJA are stopped cold at Clark with heavy losses.

CHINA:

200,000+ Chinese on the move to break the seige of Changsha.

MALAYA:

Led by elite Australian regiments, the gritty, well fortified 22,000 defenders of Johore Bharu continue to give better than they get in a continuing artillery duel with 72,000 IJA.

DEI:

Another 100+ bomber raid is launched by the Allies from Palembang to flatten Singkawang. At a cost of 33 Allied AC, 41 Japanese planes are destroyed including 21 A6M2s and 11 Oscars. Yesterday there were nearly 100 Japanese fighters at Singkawang....now there are about 40 less than half of which can fly.

With Japanese naval bombers withdrawn from Kuching and Singkawang and with thunderstorms predicted for tomorrows's weather, the Admiralty considers it an acceptable risk to sortie Force Z from Batavia to strike Japanese surface and transport TFs at Singkawang tomorrow. With the bad weather the bomber offensive will be put on hold but the Japanese airforce should be grounded also.

SITUATION REPORT: 1-25-42

DEI:

Force Z, led by Rear Admiral Spooner, is ordered to engage IJN surface TFs at Singkawang. Spotting the Japanese with their radar, the Allies surprise the enemy and land 15" shells on BB Haruna and CA Takao. After successfully engaging 2 IJN TFs, Rear Admiral Spooner orders his ships to bombard the airfield there destroying over 20 aircraft.

PI:

IJA shock attack at Clark Field causes massive casualties on both sides but the fortifications remain intact.

SITUATION REPORT: 1-25-42 CONTINUED

The Allied naval bombardment of Singkawang actually destroyed 36 Japanese fighters: 21 A6M2s and 16 Oscars. Over 100 A6M2s have been destroyed so far....45 of them on the ground.

With the exception of Burma, the Japanese have been basically stalemated across the PTO. The Allies cant stop Japan from taking Mandalay but with 75,000 IJA troops in Burma there are only 75,000 troops available in Malaya. The Allied retreat in Malaya has been pretty organized and Japan will be hard pressed to take Johore Bharu let alone Singapore unless they shift some of their forces from Burma there.

DEI:

Japan controls most of the north and west coast of Borneo but will not be able to assault Java/Sumatra until either Singapore or the Luzon is captured.

PI:

US and Philippino troops are holding up very well against 125,000 IJA. They probably have enough supply to hold out till March but after that........

With 200 Japanese planes based at San Marcelino and Lingayen, Manila has been basically
closed for business. The Allies have lost 8 AKs trying to move things in and out of Manila so resupply here looks unlikely.

CENTRAL PACIFIC:

Since capturing Wake, Tarawa and Apamama in the first couple days of the war Japan has been ominously quiet here. Location of KB is unknown at this time.

CHINA:

Most of the action has happened here but even this theater is looking stalemated. Japan started the war by sending 175,000 troops to Yenen. The Chinese couldnt mass quickly enough so the Allies upgraded all of their Corps commanders in Yenen. The Chinese have been very resilient to continuous Japanese attacks here and now all their troops here have experience in the high 50s/low 60s. Japan then tried to outflank the Chinese in Yenen but Chinese counterattacks thwarted that and now about 100,000 Chinese are tying down 200,000 IJA.

In Wuchow, both sided are facing off with about 55,000 troops apiece so not much happening here.

In Nanning, the IJA apparently sent one of the divisions that start In Indochina here so that makes even fewer troops for Malaya.

In Kweilin, 14,000 IJA are surrounded by 30,000 Chinese and a shock attack has been ordered for tomorrow.

At Changsha, the Japanese are attempting to isolate the 64,000 defenders but 75,000 IJA just west of Changsha have been surrounded themselves.

I think a couple of the keys for the Allies in China are to aggressively upgrade your commanders and try to keep a reserve until the main Japanese axis of advance have been determined.

AIR WAR:

With the commitment of B-17s, B-25s and now B-26s, the Allies are attempting to go on an aerial offensive in the DEI. The Allied fighters cant compete with the A6M2s now so they will either attempt to engage Zeros with B-17s or destroy them on the ground. 45 Zeroes have been destroyed on the ground over the last 3 days. 3 days ago, the main Japanese fighter base in the DEI, Singkawang had about 100 fighters. Now there are 18 left and the base is 73% damaged.

The 1st F4F-3s are just now arriving in the theater.

In China, the Japanese air force has been grounded since the AVG and the Hurricanes ambushed them a couple weeks ago.

SITUATION REPORT: 1-26-42

CHINA:

Chinese attack at Kweilin with 36,000 troops to 13,500 IJA. Even at 3:1 odds, the Chinese suffer 869 casualties to 47 IJA. It will take some time to reduce this pocket.

PI:

IJA shock attack at Clark at 0:1 odds with 115,000 troops to 58,000 Allied and lose 2625 casualties to 448 Allied.

MALAYA:

IJA deliberate attack at Johore Bharu at 0:1 odds with 85,000 troops to 21,000 Allied and suffer 2488 casualties to 739 Allied.

DEI:

Allied bombers grounded by bad weather. Rear Admiral Spooners TF has a range of 480 miles and needs only to sail 420 miles to make Batavia with over 100 fighters flying CAP.. Unexplicably, they sail only 360 miles and miss their CAP by 60 miles. Undeterred by the thunderstorms, the Japanese Nells and Bettys find their prey. PoW is hit by a single torpedo and will be out of the war for a bit.

SITUATION REPORT: 1-28-42

PI:

NO bombardment OR shock attack at Clark today.

AIR WAR:

The main concentrations of Japanese aircraft outside of China are:
1) San Marcelino/Lingayen complex in PI
2) Khota Bharu in Malaya(200 AC)
3) Brunei(76 A6M2s and Oscars)

With good weather today(after 3 days of thunderstorms) the Allies resumed their campaign to achieve air superiority in the DEI/ SE Asia. Today nearly 90 B-17s escorted by 8 Brewster 339Ds from Balikpappan bombed Brunei airfield. At a cost of 8 Brewsters and 6 B-17s, the Allies destroyed 8 A6M2s and 14 Oscars in addition to causing 25% damage at Brunei airfield.

With good weather predicted for tomorrow, the Allies will commence the 2nd phase of this operation with 3 major attacks. 60+ B-17s from Balikpappan will again do an AM strike on Brunei airfield followed by a PM port strike from Tarakan consisting of 22 torpedo bombers and 40 Beaufort V-IX. This port attack will be escorted by 14 newly arrived F4F-3s. Intelligence reports the presence of 2 BBs in Brunei harbor. The final attack will be a massive raid by RAF Bomber Command on Khota Bharu.

SITUATION REPORT: 1-29-42... 3 AM.....224TH GROUP RAF HQ, SINGAPORE

BRIGADIER GENERAL COCHRANE
to the pilots of Bomber Command:

"Gentlemen, we were bombed out of Singapore in early December 1941 by the massive Japanese air assaults staged from Khota Bharu. This morning, the airfields at Singapore now hum with frenzied activity. Over 200 of you were staged to Singapore in the last 24 hours in a joint operation by SWPAC, SEAC and ABDA commands. This will be the largest Allied air assault of the war so far. Your target today will be the massive Japanese aerodrome at Khota Bharu. We understand that over 200 aircraft are currently operating from this base. Your group of nearly 90 Blenhein IVs and Hudsons, 60 B-26s and B-25s, 30 B-17s and 16 Beauforts is targeted to hit the both the airstrips and the dispersed aircraft. Over the last several days, the USAAF has decimated 2 A6M2 daitais at Singkawang and another at Brunei. It is expected that you will be facing only Oscars...but intell reports about 100 of them are based there. You will be escorted by the AVG...the most experienced pilots we have. If you are successful, we will achieve air superiority over Malaya and can reinforce Singapore. If you are unsuccessful, this airbase will again be shut down within 24 hours.
Good luck in this critical mission and godspeed."

SITUATION REPORT: 1-29-42

AIR WAR:

The 3 Allied bombers missions go off as planned although only 23 B-17s out of 63 at Balikpappan participate in the grand aerial offensive....must be something related to morale. The Allies destroy 81 Japanese AC at a cost 0f 12 AC including 8 A6M2s, 20 Oscars and 26 Sallys. Khota Bhahru is 29% damaged and most Japanese AC have been withdrawn. Brunei has been 34% damaged but has been reinforced with AC so now has 95 fighters and 36 bombers.

The AM strike at Brunei was less than expected as 23 B-17s flew out of 63 available. They did however fatigue the CAP so the PM strike of 19 torpedo bombers and 33 Beaufort V-IX made it through unscathed. The torpedo bombers surprisingly were ineffective but the modern Beauforts hit 4 CAs and 2 DDs . CA Mogami was hit with 6 250 kg bombs and left heavily damaged with fires raging from stem to stern as was DD Akikaze. CA Suzaya was left burning with 3 bomb hits as was CA Mikuma with 3 bomb hits.

RAF Bomber Command at Singapore celebrated their great victory with all the pilots drinking Black and Tans as they planned yet another great airstrike on Khota Bharu for tomorrow.

CHINA:

Stalemate with 90,000+ IJA surrounded at Kweilin and west of Changsha.

MALAYA:

Stalemate at Johore Bharu. With the stunning air superiority victory at Khota Bharu today, supply transports are on the way to Singapore.

PI:

Stalemate at Clark Field

BURMA:

IJA moves in for the final kill at Mandalay.

DEI:

Stalemate on Borneo

Overall Japan lost 51 AC today including 2 A6M2s and 8 Oscars to just 11 Allied AC. Khota Bharu is now over 50% damaged.

Almost 10 AC per day are flown into the DEI from Australia or about 300 more by the end of February.

170 brand new P-39Ds, P-40Es and F4F-4s from the west coast will reach Brisbane tomorrow. The majority of these fighters will be stationed in Port Moresby but some will be loaded in their crates onto railcars in Brisbane port and will shipped to Darwin/Derby by the next day. Then they will be reassembled and eventually flown into the DEI.

Todays raid was a complete victory and the Allies now control the skies over Malaya for the foreseeable future. 116 Japanese planes are destroyed compared to 5 Allied. 5 A6M2s are destroyed for a war total of 127. 24 Oscars are destroyed for a war total of 156. 31 Sallys are lost for a war total of 108. 19 Nells are killed for a war total of 92.

For the entire war to date, the Japanese have lost 810 AC to 714 Allied. Subtract the 174 Allied AC that were defenseless and destroyed on 12/7/41 and the kill ratio looks like 810:540.

Japan seeks revenge by sending a 50 plane raid from Brunei to hit Tarakan. The Allies had already withdrawn their naval bombers and fighters from Tarakan so damage is minimal:

Day Air attack on Tarakan , at 33,61

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 13
Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 16
Ki-21 Sally x 15
Ki-48 Lily x 6

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 3 damaged

Runway hits 1

Bad waether is predicted across the region for tomorrow so it looks like the Allies Air Offensive will take a breather.

SITUATION REPORT: 2-3-42

AIR WAR:

The weather clears up a bit and most of the Allied aircraft are to find their targets. RAF Bomber Command at Singapore sends 105 AC against Khota Bharu and 116 AC against Kuching. 56 more AC sortie from Batavia and strike Singkawang. The Japanese retaliate with a 60 plane raid from Brunei against Tarakan(minimal effect) and a 58 plane unescorted bomber raid from Kuching against Batavia.

Overall, the Japanese lose 90 AC against 8 Allied including 10 A6M2s, 3 Oscars, 22 Nells, 29 Bettys , 10 Sonias and 11 Sallys. If decent weather holds for a few days the Allies should be able to obtain air superiority across the DEI as well as Malaya.

SITUATION REPORT: 2-4-42 JAPAN REQUESTS PEACE TALKS

Special envoys Prince Konoye and former Ambassador Nomura requested the United States begin peace talks with Japan.

US military radio intercepts report that General Tojo has been removed as Minister of War. Radio intercepts also reveal that the IJN is running dangerously low on fuel oil.

Meanwhile the war continues.

AIR WAR:

SITUATION REPORT: 2-5-42 CHINA

The Chinese launched their largest offensive operation of the war today with 2 massive offensives at Changsha and Kweilin.

An army of 125,000 Chinese shock attacked 33,000 IJA 60 miles NW of Changsha. The Chinese army won the attack(at a high cost in supply) and 17,000 IJA were forced to retreat across the Yangtze towards Wuhan. Curiously, 13,000 IJA remained behind as a rear guard and will need to be dealt with when the Chinese corps become resupplied. This tightens the noose around the 76,000 surrounded IJA on the road 60 miles west of Changsha.

Farther south at Kweilin, 48,000 Chinese attack 13,000 IJA that had been thought to have been surrounded for a month now. At 14:1 odds, the Chinese scored a resounding victory but the Japanese were able to retreat toards the WEST towards Hanoi over terrain that had been thought to have been in Chinese control.

SITUATION REPORT: 2-5-42 THE AIR WAR

Air superiority attacks continue as American bombers from Balikpapan hit Brunei and RAF Bomber Command in Singapore hits Kuching. The Japanese respond with a strike from Brunei directed against Tarakan and a strike from Kuching that hit Batavia.

SITUATION REPORT: 2-7-42 THE AIR WAR

The air war in the DEI reaches a crescendo as KB is committed to counterair strikes against Batavia. 170 Japanese AC and 128 Allied AC are lost over the last 2 days. When the smoke clears, the Dutch fighter force is virtually annhilated and the pre-war P-40Es and the AVG are heavily attrited. Meanwhile, the Japanese land based Zeros and Oscars are severely depleted and their major airfields at Khota Bharu(100%) Kuching(48%) and Brunei(45%) are heavily damaged.

Signal Intelligence reports heavy attrition in CV based A6M2 Daitais with Akagi and Kaga reporting only 10 pilots left out of 27 on both carriers.

Allied naval bombers based in Tarakan score hits on IJN cruisers in port at Brunei for the 2nd day in a row.

Meanwhile, about 8 modern US fighters a day are staged from Australia into the DEI. With P-40E and P-40B groups depleted, the US is glad to be sending in F4F-3s and P-39s where the planes are readily available and the supply of pilots is virtually inexhaustable.

JAPAN SURRENDERS: 2-8-42

Following catastrophic aircraft losses and land combat stalemate in all theaters, the Allies accepted Japan's unconditional surrender today. Subtract out the 175 Allied AC lost on 12/7/41 and the Allies achieved better than a 1.5:1 ratio in destroyed aircraft. Final dispositions by theater to follow.

Aircraft losses >100 as follows:

Japan:
316 A6M2, 169 Nell, 134 Betty, 153 Sally, 180 Oscar, 104 Lily, 103 Sonia

Allies:

170 P-40B, 102 P-40E
