i am awaiting the (maybe) day that you explain how the dogs teeth came to resemble Yosarrian's... (which was a good thing esp. after the dental police almost nabbed Y.)

I think it is a case of structural homology among mammals and no small dose of bad luck for Tojo and good luck for Yossarian. This was meant to symbolize the apparent randomness of death in war and the sense of guilt among the survivors. The author had no intent to defame Armenians or any other peoples of the trans-Caucasus or Asia Minor.

Great stuff!! (as usual)

So, is the battle for the DEI still ongoing? Are the Allies in full counteroffensive mode, or is this just an opportunistic attack taking advantage of the Japanese preoccupation in the DEI (or, is it DIE for the Japanese...)??

Presidential Daily Briefing, Oval Office, July 29, 1942

Present: POTUS, Mr. Hoover, Gen. Marshall, Adm King, Adm Leahy, Sec Stimson
Absent: Mr. Truman, (sent out to get coffee and to see if he could find some kind of fish eggs)

POTUS: "Good, now that Truman is gone, lets get down to business. I detest that self-righteous, populist, diletante. If I hear one more hackneyed aphorism from that product of two centuries of consanguineous marriage I swear I may decorate that $20 back-country suit of his with patrician vomitus. I never want that nimrod to be cleared on the Manhattan Project, is that clear?"

All: "Yes sir"

POTUS: "Very well. <turns to Hoover> Bill tells me you are the reason I can't have my sea urchin eggs. Is that right?"

Hoover: <appears obviously surprised> "Sir..are you saying..have you also been served canned sea urchin roe from M&M Enterprises? <his voice rising in pitch in apparent alarm>

POTUS: "How should I know, it comes to me on ice. It is really quite delicious."

Hoover: "But Mr President, that product, and it's distributor are suspected in the Japanese "Go -gan" leader abduction plot. You may be in jeapordy"

POTUS: "Oh not that again. Didn't you hear about Presidential Directive 1.8? Gen. Marshall, Adm. King, are we OK on that? Any abductions since 1.8 went into effect?"

Gen Marshall: "No sir"

Adm King: "No, Mr. President"

POTUS:: "Well, there you have it. Mr. Hoover, I want my fish eggs back and I want it now. Is that clear?"

Mr Hoover:: "Yes sir, but what about the war profiteering angle?"

POTUS:: "Oh Christ! Now you sound like Truman. Why not throw Henry Ford in the klink too? I want my fish eggs and I want a case for Churchill too. Period. End of discussion. The color of innovation is green Mr Hoover, and it has pictures of my predecessors on it. "<turns to Marshall>

"Now, General Marshall, how are things going in South Java? In particular, can you tell me if the Japanese have been pushed back from a position called...hold on...<pulls paper out of pocket>.....a position called "Kittyhawk West".........

**************Office of Gen. Kenney, SPWPac Air Boss, 7/29/42, 15:20*************

Gen. Kenney: <speaking to his valet, his brow furrowed> "Staff Sargeant, an odd thought just occurred to me. When exactly was Gen. MacArthur supposed to be back from his Flores inspection?"

S Sgt. Kemp: "I believe it was yesterday afternoon sir. I will confirm that for you. Sir, where would you like me to put the imported fish eggs the General suggested you try before he left for Flores?"

He is AWOL. In retrospect, we deduced, by looking at old game files, he was gone before we upgraded to 1.8 (upon FDR's instruction, of course).

*************Oval Office, 21:05, 7/29/42****************

FDR: "What do you mean 'missing', General? The commander of my Army and Navy in the SWPAC has been misplaced?"

Gen. Marshall: "Well not exactly, Mr President. His Catalina failed to show at the appointed time and no radio contact has been achieved. He was touring the partisan operation in Flores for 10 days or so and, it seems, with all the attention directed on the Milne Bay operations, nobody noticed him missing."

FDR: "Do you mean to tell me, General Marshall, that after moving Heaven and Earth to get him out of the Philippines, he takes a risk like that during our first major offensive operation in the Pacific"?

Gen. Marshall: "Yes Mr. President. I believe you have succinctly summarized the situation". <pauses> There is someting else, sir."

FDR: "Yes. Go on please."

Gen. Marshall: "Well, Mr President, I believe we must consider the possibility of abduction. It seems he left for Flores BEFORE you issued Presidential Directive 1.8"

FDR: "Good Lord. This could be very damaging to morale. We need to hush this up. I want his wife isolated and get somebody in there familiar with the partisans to find him. Meanwhile we can spread the word he has been recalled to Washington for emergency consultation."
