I know - I haven't read every thread.....

I have just loaded CHS and...

But is it correct that Dutch harbor has a 0(0) value for air base? Was Umnak Island 0(5) the airbase for Dutch?

Most of the work on revising the Alaskan base values for my map was done by forum member "Blackhorse". I hope he doesn't mind if I repost the comments he posted a long time ago regarding Dutch Harbor:

In 1940, the Navy decided to build a forward naval base capable of supporting ships and submarines at Dutch Harbor on Unalaska Island. To protect the naval base, completed in August, 1941, the army built Ft. Mears and moved nearly 5,500 men onto the island. However, the army could not find a location suitable to build an airfield for fighters anywhere on the rugged 30-mile long island, so instead based them on Umnak, nearly 70 miles away. Japanese carrier aircraft bombed Dutch Harbor as part of the Midway diversion. Once the US occupied Adak and built a (better) naval base there, Dutch Harbor lost most of its significance.

I hope that answers your question.

Andrew

As a pointless extra, my mothers first boyfriend was stationed as an air force recruit on Umnak. He said it was the most depressing place he had ever been.

And I doubted you Guys...

This would have made my latest PBEM SO much easier....The Japanese have held Umnak and the Allies Dutch...... lets just call Dutch our own littl e Guadalcanal... with 4 BB's (including the Musashi!) and 2 CV's going down in these environs....
