When placing bombers on a primary mission of naval attack and a secondary mission of recon the bombers do not conduct a recon mission, but instead bomb the target. If the target is a hex with a land unit instead of a base no mission is flown. This attack does not seem to score any hits, so I can not tell it is a port attack or airbase attack. Both tactical and level bombers do this.

The planes conducting the mission appear to be intercepted as easily as regular bombing attacks and fly in large numbers instead of the usual two or so planes that usually conduct a recon. There are no animations when these missions are flown. Even if the mission is intercepted by CAP and escorted no air combat animation is shown.

The problem seems universal so it is easy to replicate. I will send a save from a test start in 1.6.

Minor point ... when sending a save that is cross posted here. Please include the text you put here in the email so I know what the save is for

Did you manage to decipher the mess I sent to you?

Did it demonstrate the bug well enough, or did you need better example?

What is the Airfield Strength? If A=1 no 2ndary missions (at least according to the manual).

The air units fly a mission, it is just not a recon mission. It seems to be some sort of bombing mission but does not score any hits. The problem is that this secondary recon mission seems to be treated as any other bombing mission as far as cap interception and number of planes used so the bombers will fly into CAP get roughed up and burn fatigue.

It would be nice to set land based air on naval / recon to cover the sea and gather some intel if nothing shows. As it stands it can't really be used. It tires out the unit and if enemy fighters are present gets the boys killed.

Using non-recon aircraft for recond missions doesn't confer magical immunity. You are still subject to being shot down over the target.

As it should be, however the problem is that units set to naval attack / recon do not fly a recon mission, they fly something else. I have set up a second example to demonstrate and will send the save.

In this save all planes have on both sides have been stood down except;

G1/ 1st Daitai based in Tainan. Mission recon. Target Clark Field. One group of Zeros on escort.

G1/ Takao Daitai based in Takao. Mission: naval attack / recon. Target: Manila. One group of Zeros on escort.

All the fighters at Clark Field and Manila are set to escort 70% CAP.

Results.

In the AM phase the G1/ 1st Datai flies 1 Betty to Clark Field and encounters fighters on CAP. Recon photo sound files play and operational reports are received of photos being taken and returns to base no combat report.

In the PM phase the G1/ Takao flies 18 Betties escorted by 24 Zeros and they encounter 21 fighters on CAP and an air battle takes place (with no animation but kills are reported in operations). No recon photos are reported, bombing sound files play no recon photos are reported in operations and a the following combat report is generated;

Hope that picture works.

Save details are as follows;

Standard Scenario 15, PBEM. File witp020.pws

Allied password: test
