Don't give up on trying to drop into windows. This morning I cranked up the computer, started the game and just for the hell of it, I tried "windowskey-d". It worked!!! And it is working right now.

The only thing I can think of is I shut my computer down last night. So I started this morning after a reboot.

Weird...

GGWaW doesn't have windows' mode
Alanb

Check again. W@W has a windowed mode, both in the options menu and using the -w shortcut.

I cant find options menu from Grown of Glory , found it but there's nothing about running the game windowed
What does the -w shortcut mean ?

Yes, it doesn't appear to be entirely consistent. 9 out of 10 times, I can alt-tab out with no problem (other than the game stays in the 1024x768 reso) but during one game, it didn't work at all and I never could determine why that time was different than the rest.

For those of us who have widescreen monitors, fullscreen 1024x768 looks terrible, my monitor makes the screen fit a 1280x800 screen distorting the text badly. Unfortunately a showstopper for me as I would really like to buy this game.

Yea, a windowed mode is pretty much becoming a requirement these days. I run two monitors, 20" 1280 x 960 (normal aspect) & 23" 1920 x 1200 (wide aspect).

All the newer laptops coming out are switching to wide screen displays to pick up on the DVD player market. It is becoming a core market requirement to support either wide screens or a windowed mode. I understand this is more work on the development side, but it does translate to more sales.

Couple this to hardware LCD panel makers seem to have become fixated on strange resolutions such as 1280 x 1024 or 1280 x 768, none of which scale nicely. I'd settle for a windowed 1024x768 fixed res vs an adjustable res.

Yep. My LCD looks ugly at any other resolution other than 1280x1024...I can play, and I can read...but it plays havoc with my eyes after a while.

I don't know why or when game developers decided to lock resolution. It appears to be a new thing, as I don't recall having the problem in the past.

Running XP and Windowskey +d doesn't work.

Let me be more specific:

In the game, both alt/tab and windowskey/d bring the taskbar to the bottom of the screen. However neither left nor right clicking on the manual app does anything; the map stays on the screen.

This is exactly what it does for me. I'm running a 1.8 Ghz Athlon with Win2K and 756MB of RAM and Adobe Reader 7.02. So probably somewhere middle-of-the-road.

I was frustrated by this, but I wanted to play so much that I finally gave in & printed the manual. But I have a slow printer, so it took maybe a couple hours to print (since I wanted to print front & back). So ... I finally set it to run while I slept. Since this was about 4:30 or 5:00 am and I'd printed the tutorial manual, then had to play at least that much. :)

But general comment - FABULOUS game! Good balance of a lot of things. Now if I can just figure out how to mod and add another general to Sweden ... :)

Alt tab and window key + d never works on the first turn for me, but after I run the game a turn or two I don't generally have a problem getting both to work.

Well, some game programmers manage to write games that alt-tab just fine. Others never seem to figure it out. On the same computer. Usually a company is very consistent. Either they always have trouble writing games that Alt-Tab, or they never have trouble.

Something weird is going on with this one, because it seems to come and go. It doesn't work, it does work, back and forth.

BTW, there's something weird with your dialog boxes when Alt-tab does work. Any open boxes in the game will be open over top of the other programs after you alt tab. And its not just an image. You can click Close to get rid of the box and it doesn't bring the game program back to the top like clicking on an element of the program probably should.

ALT-TAB doesn't work for me, but I still have a workaround. I run Paint Shop Pro, set it to do a screen capture, and then, when I want to get out of CoG, I do a capture. At that point, I can switch to the pdf manual, or whatever.

We believe that the Alt-Tab issue has been addressed and a fix should be in the first update.

I will try to work on a Windows mode. I looked over the code that initializes the graphics last night...it may be possible, not entirely sure yet.

Just thought I'd report back that something magical happened after reading this forum. I eventually (though I'd tried a few times before) got it to alt-tab. Like someone said, once it did it the first time, it wasn't a problem after that. But it did take quite a long time to do it. Think it was because I just decided to wait to see if it would work. I could always see the taskbar at the bottom, but it just seemed to let the mouse move but not accept any input. I could alt-tab and the list of programs would appear, but it wouldn't go to any of them. Finally, though, even though I'd tried that before, I tried Ctrl-Alt-Del and waited for a while. Then I tried to access the task manager, and it worked! After that, it alt-tabbed fine between the game and other things as well, not just task manager - including the manual. Maybe it was using the Quick Start which I hadn't tried before ... ? Maybe it was trying to minimize the game, maybe it was ... using task manager to Switch To ... not sure. Will try to repeat again tonight.

First try tonight didn't work, but I suspect it will again if I wait. Just wanted to report a success.

P.S. Still love the game!!!

Seems the key for me is quickly minimizing everything just as you click the Quick Start to begin the game. Even if you use Quick Start & everything else is minimized, even a folder with a shortcut to the Quick Start keeps it from alt-tabbing. Don't know if that is helpful or not.

At the risk of bringing up an old issue, this thread should end with an acknowledgement that ALT-TAB works with ver. 1.1.

Thanks.
