Heh, in my game, the Long Island spent the first six weeks after arriving in docks after having been hit by two torpedoes from a Jap submarine during her very first plane ferry mission.

I always keep a strong ASW group with her. She's a fragile old girl.

I use a mix of flushdeckers and DMS/MSW's. Eight usually for a TF composition of nine total with the CVE. I like protecting the airgroup on board her.

Since she's slow, the slower PG/PC's are good to use too.

Currently, I have Long Island bringing back the fragmented squadrons from my "Coral Sea" off the east coast fo Oz. I had to sent it with an AO because my planes kept transferring to the nearest base for "I & I." Thus, I am so far from any Allied bases that sub attack is unlikely, but I have 6 DD's just in case.

Am I correct in reading the other messages that the VR's on the CVE's are to be used as replacements for the regular CV's. To increase their experince, set them to training at 90 or 100%. Right??

The VR's will fly transfer range to any CV based group needing replacements.
The training mission is a good one to set them on.
Supposedly their experience is going to be increased. Either in 1.6 or Pry's scenarios. Can't remember which one right now.

Guys, thanks for all the good info on these "mini" carriers. I can finally get to read through it all tonight and start planning accordingly.

The only thing that's missing from the game regarding CVE's is the ability to put them in ASW task forces, thus creating an Atlantic-style hunter-killer group. I'm not sure if that tactic was used in the Pacific, though...

What I did was put the Long Island in it's own CVE TF with a dive bomber squadron on ASW. Worked out well in helping to spot subs for the ASW groups.

I've done the same thing with her... Put Dauntlesses on her, with about 6-8 ASW capable ships. The Dauntlesses spot the sub, I detach 4 DDs to go to the spot, and sometimes I even get lucky with a hit from the planes...

Patrolling back and forth over the convoy lanes helps.

No. Units that are carrier capable cannot be trained to be carrier trained. It's fixed in game. One can use carrier capable units on carriers, they don't perform worse, but may suffer higher ops losses.

Thanks for all the great info. Now if I can just get a game going I can see how good it works.
