I apologise if these questions have been answered elsewhere ,but as a Rookie Allied commander vs Japanese AI in Scenario 15, what do I use thes eship types for, and more specifically how do I use them? I am assuming they provide support for subs etc, but I'm not certain.

AVD- Seaplane Tender Destroyers?
AV- Seaplane Tenders?
AG-Colliers?
AS- Sub Tenders?

Thanks for any help

AVD- is just like a Seaplane tender but made out of a DD
AV- pretty much your standard seaplane tender

Both provide a/c support to a base they are in.

AG- small transport, almost like an higgens boat but I think AG's are bigger. I mainly use them as small short range transport ships. Can't really think of any other use for them.

AS- Sub tender; repairs and supplies subs.

AVD's and AV's. Put them in a base where you have Patrol planes operating. The ships provide some air support to help them fly. They are best at a base where you have patrol planes, but no (or little) base force to operate the planes. Let's say you have patrol planes at French Frigate Shoals. You can put an AV there and you don't need to also supply a base force. Also, let's say you have 24 fighter's operating at Midway and you also have 16 patrol planes. The base force may only have 30 air support, so an AV or AVD will give you enough support so that you can operate at full efficiency.

AG's are barges. Generally planes won't attack them (not worth it). So, use them to run supplies to forward bases where you don't want to risk full sized AK's. There are no victory points for the enemy when they destroy your barges (and vice versa).

AS's. These are sub tenders. put them in port wherever you base your subs. The port will have a better chance of repairing subs when AS's are present. Also, if you base subs out of small ports, AS's will allow Torpedoes to be replenished. Otherwise, you need a size 8 port.

Many Thanks Bradley7735. Just the details I needed to allow me to use these ship types properly.

I will read all further posts, though I wont acknowledge each kind contributor.

Thanks to all.

I have a question on the AG's -

The manaul says something about ships leeching fuel from one another when in the same TF. What is the best way to use AG's(and other barges) to move supplies? Their range is so short, what do you send with them to keep them fueled up? Sending an AK along seems to defeat the purpose of using the barges.

You don't. You use them to move supplies back and forth on ultra-short runs, in places like the Solomons and Philippines. All AG/LCVP/LCM TF's.

If you order 6 or 8 AGs to load supplies, and the trip is more than a couple of hexes, one of the AGs will load fuel to help in extending the range. At least that's how it used to work.

I used them much more extensively in the previuos UV game because the short range between islands made them very useful in the Solomons (especially because of the threat from Island based SBDs for fast transport convoys).

AG's are the "raison d'etre" for Wirraways. Use them on Naval Attack and they'll reduce the re-supply rate to a trickle.

I use my large AVs at bases I have patrol float planes to take some of the load off of the local BF.

I normally use the smaller AVs (Casco Class) and the AVDs as additional convoy escorts. When the convoy gets to its destination I remove them and farm them out as needed.

I haven't gotten any AGs yet, but given my past experience with them in UV, I'll probably only use them around New Guinea & Solomons areas.

The Jap AGs only go 8 mph- so it doesn't matter if they have fuel or not because they can only travel two hexes per turn. Too bad they can't do some river trade- then they would have a REAL use.
