War Report 3/26/42 The Allies bite back today in a series of naval actions on both sides of the war! First in the DEI, Bettys from a couple locations bombed the enemy troops at Palembang to help with the ground fighting going on there. Althought the IJA pushed again, little ground was gained. In the morning, British carrier aircraft appeared over a transport fleet headed by the heavy cruiser Ashigara. Martins from Batavia were flying with the Swordfish and although the Dutch planes missed, the Swordfish managed to put two torpedoes into the AP Achou Maru, and, far worse, three fish into the Ashigara.Allied airstrike on CA Ashigara The three torpedoes started fires and flooding in portions of the ships, but it was still making a fair amount of speed when a small surface group closed in on the transport fleet east of Palembang. The Ashigara before being hit. The light cruisers Dauntless and Capetown, along with the destroyer Vendetta showed up looking for easy kills among the transports, assuming the Ashigara was out of action from the Stringbag attack. However, Captain Ichinomiya on the Ashigara, sensing this was his ship's final hour, went out as a hero. Steaming directly into the enemy, the Ashigara took many of the shells fired from the British ships, allowing the transports to escape completely unharmed. Along with a couple destroyers, the Ashigara showed true Japanese fighting spirit, pounding the Dauntless and Capetown over and over with its 8 inch shells until all ammo was expended. Each light cruiser was also hit by a torpedo from the destroyer Yugumo. Those and the constant pounding from the large shells was more than either ship could take and they were both sunk. The Vendetta took a few penetrating hits from the smaller caliber weapons and escaped trailing smoke and down one turret.Naval action east of Palembang. Given its distance from Singapore, the Ashigara will likely sink, but it certainly performed well given its heavily damaged state going into the surface engagement. Kates from Singapore also attempted to bomb the Royal Sovereign, but no hits were landed. Feurer Krieg Area Report In the South Pacific, US battleships made an appearance at both Canton Island and Upolu! In the nighttime, the battleship California and four destroyer escorts closed in to bombard the airfield. Coastal watchers reported seeing an explosion when the large ships struck a mine on its approach. Given the size of the ship, the mine certainly won't sink the ship, but hopefully it will take some time to repair the damage.A rare mine hit on a capital ship. A small convoy defended by nothing more than minesweepers managed to escape destruction, likely because the California was focused on hitting the island. A lack of recon seemed to help us, as the California's shells mostly missed the airfield, destroying only one Zero. At Upolu, the battleship New Mexico and the light cruiser Honolulu arrived with escort. An ASW group on patrol crossed paths with the big ships and in two running engagements all of the ships were sunk except one gunboat. The New Mexico hit Upolu also, but there was not much there to damage. An unlucky ASW group is sent to the bottom. All the enemy ships managed to escape without being spotted during the day. Hopefully the next time a raid like this occurs, the light carrier group will be on station to catch these large ships with some aerial torpedoes. At Noumea, the heavy bombers continued to take a heavy toll on the ships unloading at Koumac. Another transport was sunk and several damaged. The slow cruiser Kashima took several hits but is in decent shape. The DD Urakaze took a bomb also. The 38th is totally unloaded now, and in decent shape after its long trip from China. Several ships have been organized into groups to start heading home to Rabaul. The most damaged transports will travel together. Many troop transports are nearly empty of their supplies, so they should finish unloading in the night and be gone by morning. This will still leave a handful of troop ships as well as 8 cargo ships still unloading supplies. With luck they will survive a couple more days to get most of their supplies unloaded.Allied bombers continue their attacks. A half a dozen Liberators from Midway bombed Wake Island at night, injuring 4 soldiers there. Lastly, the Airfield at Suva has completed the upgrades needed to store torpedoes for the Nells and Betty's based there. Sub Ops: No activity to report.
