Hi, this is my first time posting in this forum.

I have just started playing WITP and besides many technical issues about convoys and the production system, etc., which I'm attempting to answer for myself by experimenting, I have a question about Japanese military commands.

Does anyone have a quickie guide to Japanese Army and Fleet areas of responsibility? I haven't paid attention in this first game vs the AI, and I have LCUs scattered around the map without regard to their original intentions, e.g. I have a division of the Southern Area command fighting in China.

(I wish I could find my old SPI Strategy & Tactics Magazine with the Pacific War article, but it's in a box somewhere...)

Are you asking if the command that an LCU is assigned to, actually matters to where it is deployed? It doesn't. An LCU of any command can be stationed anywhere on the map, without any adverse affects.

Or are you asking, because you're interested in the historical reference, and just want to try and keep your units together? (somebody else will have to give you that infor, I can't rattle off the Japanese commands, off the top of my head).

The only thing the HQ matters for LCUs is, if it's restricted. In the case of Japan, that China Exped, Kwangtung, and Home Islands. Those units cannot be loaded onto ships, unless their command is changed to something other than those (they can however march anywhere they want to).

Thanks, Feinder!

What I'm after is a breakdown of the Japanese Theatre and Army/Fleet areas of responsibility, such as Southern Army Group-25thArmy-Malaya, etc. I can glean some information from historical monographs, but the info is patchy. I may have to bite the bullet and order a book...

Doesn't the manual refer to this being important for supply or something?

Well, an HQ unit will draw supplies to itself, and so it will thus benefit LCUs to be with, or near the HQ unit.

But the fact that the LCU is SEAC and the HQ is SWPac, is technically irrelevent. The HQ will help to "repair" dispabled squads in the LCU, regardless of the LCU's affiliation. It -might- repair faster if the LCU is of the same command of the HQ. But that's hard to verify.

For example, the rules state that an LCU will draw supplies for replacements, from any city that it can trace a supply path to (given overland rates), that has 2x the number of supplies. So if you have 2x the supplies at your own base, you can draw replacement squads. Any city connected to you, within supply range, that has 2x supplies will feed you replacements (probably more replacements the closer because of less deterioration, but I haven't verified this). So if you're in Dacca, your LCU is drawing supplies to create replacements from Dacca, and every other city within supply range, with 2x supplies, regardless of the HQ affilitation of the LCU. It never actually says that the LCU must be of the same command of the base or nearby HQ (and I can state that it is true that a unit will draw replaments regardless of command, as long as there are lots of supplies).

But it is true that an LCU is gong to be happier with, or near, -any- HQ because..
a. The HQ draws supplies to itself. Those excess supplies will be drawn by the LCU to build/undisable squads. So even if the LCU is not actually stacked with the LCU, it's still gaining the benifit of more supplies in closer proximity (less deterioration over distance).
b. The HQ has excess of support. If stacked witht the HQ, those excess support squads, help to un-disable squads.

It -might- be, but would be extremely difficult to verify, that an LCU -might- draw replacement squads faster, if it's affilitate with the HQ it is nearby. Hard to test this though, as drawing replacements is such a crap-shoot anyways.

One think I did think of, that I have -NOT- tested, is to see if the HQ bonus to assault strength only applies to units of the same command. That would certainly be an incentive to keep/convert LCUs to the proper HQ (the bonus can be up to 90% increase in assault strength if near a command HQs). But again, I haven't tested it.
