This is an AAR for a CHS 1.2 extended map long campaign. We have promised not to read each others comments so I will be somewhat candid.

December 7th Air Raid Pearl Harbor....

Daily Summary from War Department to President: December 7th 1941:

Lots of ships damaged, but none sunk in harbor. Target Ship Utah scuttled to free up repair efforts for BBs.

Long range plans.

1. Establish supply bases from Christmas Island to Suava. 2ed Marine CD and a Marine Fighter Squadron left San Diego today. A second convoy of 5AKs and 1 TK sails to Christmas Island to Establish the first refuel/resupply point.

2. Shelter the fleet until Japanese Intentions Clear. IJN First Air Fleet presumed astride lines of communication between CVs and PH. Ordered each CV TF SSW towards NZ at best speed. Avoid contact with the enemy.

3. Establish Defensive Perimeter in Phillipines, Manila-Clark-Batan. Hold all three as long as possible. Will probably withdraw to Manila for last stand to retain Maximum Supplies. Also P40s at Manila largely untouched. President is considering effect on public morale if Mac. is lost in Phillipines.

4. All possible TK/AKs in SEA area directed to Plambang. We will conduct massive sealift of all possible Oil and Resources to ports in OZ.

5. Delaying actions in Malay Pensilia with planned withdraw. Force Z will only contest landings that seriously threaten to cut off land forces.

6. Reorganize the RN merchant forces in the Indian Ocean. Massive relocation of merchant shipping to Aden, Middle East, Korrochi, and Bombay. Fast transports will carry one load of supplies in transit to US West Coast. Remainder will ferry supplies and fuel to Oz.

7. Naval forces in SEA area are concentrating at Singapore (z), Phlambang (Dutch), Sorreibo (Dutch) and Tarrikin (US). Will seek out carelessly escorted taskforces, but otherwise avoid contact. Forces in being may be more effective than actual contact.

On December 9th the Japanese launched yet a third days worth of attack on Pearl Harbor. One of the BBs in the harbor rolled over in its birth and sank. Two others are listing heavily and fires are alight everywhere. The USAAF forces on the island are a shambles. The airfield is nealry shut down and only a few planes take off and are promplty shot down.

The two US CVs have joined together south of Johnson Island to form a single CV TF and a single surface combat task force. Admiral Halesy has taken command of both ships. A major argument is ongoing about turning the two CVs back to Pearl. After three days of strikes it is estimated that perhaps 80 aircraft are out of commission. Certinly they must be fatigued. While the battle rages the CV in San Diego has sortied.

In Singapore force Z and escorts have docked to avoid torpedo attacks. This has reduced the effectiveness of AA fire and both capital ships have taken significant structurtural damage, reducing effectiveness by about 20%. We are considering reloacting the RN forces to Plambang or Batavia.

Land forces have withdrawn in good order towards Manila/Clark Field in the PI and towards Singapore in Malysia.

The major strategic decision to be made is whether or not to move CVs into the Dutch East Indies perhaps a week ahead of the Japanese First Air Fleet, or to turn back and fight.

I really need some help. My opponent and I have a sync problem. What is worse after I run the combat replay (the .001 save file) and load the next turn I get no combat report....nothing. The settings say combat report on. Sometimes the computer locks up entirely after I look for the non existanct combat report. Obviously AARs are hard to do when you dont know if you can belive the combat replay and cannot even generate a combat report.

The only action between three days of PH raids and Dec 12th is Air Landings In Malasia. One base was already abandoned, the other not. I will counter attack at the occupied base. Meanwhile all other forces are racing to the tip of Malasia just north of Singipore. We will make our first stand there and retreat into Singipore for our final stand in this area.

Meanwhile, the Naval HQ in Manili was secretly shipped out abord retreating AKs and APs. It has almost made safe passage to the DEI. I have tired to load all 400-500 capactiy AKs in PI with supplies to send to Manila. These have drawn the wrath of baby KB, and many have been sunk, but during the carnige the other ships escaped.

I've also noted some japanese movement in China. One of the sothern sities was occupied by a single Japanese unit. I have changed the Army and Corps equivalent commanders to more compentent ones and ordered a bombardment attack. More training is needed before we can launch a real one.

The US CVs were halted at Johnson Island for a possible counter attack after three days of attacks on PH. They have been ordered to return to PH. The CV on the west coast is also sailing for PH. We should have 3 CVs in the harbor within three days. I should have recovered some CAP capability from LBA by then as well.

My opponent is not reckless.....he is following a very historical course in that he is risking very little. He lands forces within LBA cover or under cover of KB. Since I cannot really stop him he will eventually gain the same territory as the more agressive opponents, but with very little attrition.

One more detail. Several days of iron bombs on force Z in Singapore resulted in 20% system damage for POW and Repulse. It is not true that the ion bombs do no damage. After slipping out of Hong Kong Harbor and refueling in the DEI, Ive set sail for Colombo. I'm not abandoing the DEI, but I want to repair the RN capital ships and prepare to defend India if needed.

Finally combat reports.....writing the AAR will be easier...

December 14th. One week after Pearl Harbor.

KB is sited WNW of PH taking the northerly route back to Japan.

Two large taskforces are created to get cripples and damaged ships back to the west coast. One group heads for Seattle and the other to San Fransisco. The sight of perhaps 50 damaged ship leaving Pearl is hard on the morale of the troops. However, by divinding the repair work up it is hoped that perhaps within 1-2 years two essentially destroyed BBs can be refloated and repaired.

The USNs three CVs are converging on Pearl and will all dock within two days if all goes as planned. Patrol aircraft assigned to the South Pacific and Bombers heading for SE Asia have transited Pearl for points west.

In the DEI/Phillipines

Japanese forces finally landed on the southern PI at Cagayn. Japanese continued daily attacks on Clark Field, but Manila Airfields are untouched. Very large stockpiles of supplies remain there with small freighters unloading every few days from outlying islands. About 1/3 get throught the barrier.

Hudsons transfered from Malay to Borneo reported air attacks on Ryujo (twice today). and a small surface TF headed for Borneo (twice also). The surface force was also engaged by Dutch Martins. All to no avail. However 2 small AKs heading for Manila were heavily attacked.

China.

After a change of command, 15,000 Chinese troops were ordered to attack IJA forces at Wuchow. Becuase of the low experience levels only probing attacks (bombardment) were made. The Chinese move small airgroups within range of IJA ground troups in preparation for gournd attacks. We will see if we can avoid killing our own troops.

Maylasia an Indian brigade preparing to leave Kuatan instead attacked IJA paratroopers. What was presumed to be a small efforts appears to have been two complete regiments. Although outnumbered the Japanese easily repulsed the attack. The brigade is ordered to resume marching south.

ASW and Other Comments.

Two IJN subs have been reported sunk near Pearl. This was due entirely to air power. The force has diminished from perhaps 20 subs to about 5 in two groups. An ASW force comprised of the remaining DMSs at Pearl (5 ships) are clearing one area SW of Pearl in the path of Halsey's CVs.

Finally, the cadres of the newly created South Pacific command embarked on three APs for New Zealand. We will post pickets on the island chains and heavily fotify Oz, Nz, and PH. For this reason we did not want to risk placing SP command at Sava, Pago Pago, or some other area that might later be taken. We are committing to concentrating enough force that, come what might the major cities in OZ, NZ and PH DO NOT FALL.
