So for some unknown reason my patrol guys refuse to fly regularly, and what happens? Enemy BB force sneaks up to a level 6 airfield full of crummy planes and causes fireworks. "What, a Chinese New Year?", "Naah, just some Betty-poppin'".

After that, I checked my patrol squadrons, and although most of them are H6K4, E13s, E7Ns etc., set to Naval Search at 50-100%, 6.000 ft, max or normal range, their fatigue is very low, number of missions flown is 0 or 1, and expirience at about starting level. So it's obvious they thon fly at all, or when they do, send a plane or two (out of 9 or 12 planes in a chutai).

Is there something I overlook? Pilot/Leader ratings? But how can ALL the leaders be lazya$$es, in absolutely EVERY patrol/float plane chutai?

Mine fly, as far as I know. The solution du jour for plane groups not flying is that the number of pilots is less than the number of aircraft. Check that to start.

Another thing I would check is the forecast each day. You could be grounded by weather. Weather in many parts of the Pacific is not conducive to flight ops. Someone around the boards has a sig quoting a marine on Guadalcanal. It goes something like "March 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17: It rained today".

Finally, I do not think the mission count increments each time you fly. If you did, most patrol groups would have literally hundreds of missions after a single year. More likely, the mission count is done like with CAP, where it randomly increases one mission in 5 or 10, or only increments when the plane spots a task force.

They are flying, they just didn't spot the bombardment TF. Nothing stops Naval Search happening except possibly the base having 0 supplies. If an air group was doing nothing you would see the fatigue drop to 0 for all pilots after a few days.

The "not enough pilots" bug only applies to Naval Attack, like clouds.

Ok, after some testing, seems they fly after all. Fatigue hovers around 5-8 (having them fly patrol only up to normal range) and expirience is slowly going up.
I guess Oznoyng is right about not counting patrol flights as "missions" on a 1 to 1 basis.
Weather was also a factor, my naval attacks won't fly as enemy TFs were covered in cloud icons.

On with the questions - does the altitude setting effect op losses for naval search? I.e. setting them to 1k ft as opposed to 6k or 10k ft.

nope also applies to escort, cap, etc....

Sorry, you are indeed correct if it is a CV air group. For LBA what I said is true (I think).

I'm surprised no-one picked me up on the clouds thing ...

Experience plays a part in a VP units ability to spot TFs. If they are in fact starting levels experience that may have also played a part. Also if the weather was dog squeeze the day they missed the Bombard TF you wouldn't have even seen the cloud that obscured the TF from sight. Sounds like you opponent is wiley and understands the weather/spotting system.

As for counting missions, my guess is that patrols will be counted as missions when they see an enemy ship. So you can fly forever in an area remote from the main action and never have a mission credited.
