Eric, would it be possible to have the option to retreat before combat into the city, or to attempt to retreat into the city. I find it very frustrating to have 10k or 20k mil/inf attempt to garrison one of my provincial cities, only to be forced into a pitched battle with 200,000 enemy troops who have covered three provinces before mine move nextdoor, or sometimes even into the city having started their turn in that very province.... IMHO IRL any local commander would run from such an encounter usually behind the nearest big wall...

I dont want to sneak in replacements once the seige has started, but I think if your province is empty of enemy units at the start of the turn, then you should at least have the chance to get your troops into the city... just a thought

That's a good idea. Make city size more useful too. Where it might get problematic is if you have a corps with more divisions than can fit into the city.... allowing the player to send some divisions into the city would take a lot of UI work; probably would have to have the rule that either it all fits or it doesn't. I'll add this idea to my list of things to consider for the features patches.

I would not worry about a corps. I would reason that a corps is a field force, not meant for garrison duties and would / should either fight or attempt to withdraw from the area. It is the small "independent" detachments that should retreat to the city, if there are too many then they could enter the city in stack order and the excess can then fight, or run, or surrender, perhaps surrender is quickest and easiest, avoids another battle and the player should not have sent too many to garrison a city in the first place.

This may help the AI, because I have often seen the AI add its garrison to the defence if numbers are not too dissimilar (It does not seem to worry about "quality"), and then having lost the field battle it looses the province without a siege. Perhaps it would be more willing to strengthen the garrison.
