I do not recall seeing this in the manual, and I have tried "search" without success, can anyone tell me what are the pros and cons of giving or not giving money to the Church when it is requested?

Gee. I'm actually not sure about this.
I -think- that you get a relationship boost with the Catholic countries if youmake the donation, and lose a bit if you don't, but I'm really not sure.

Revolutionary France was hardly a friend to the church, I doubt the Pope would have expected many donations from Paris!

From the playing nations

France had no official religion after ter Revolution (was catholic pre-rev.)
Prussia was Protestant (if I'm not mistaken)
Russia was Orthodox
Sweden was Protestant
Turkey was Muslim
England was Anglican

only Austria and Spain were catholic. So may be in a later version they could change that when only you play these countries you get this message. Come and think of it I don't even no the meaning or effect of this message (answer: hence the original question L-M dooh ).

That donation pop-up works against the Pope.

Every time I see it I think "Oh, Papacy, that reminds me, it's the highest culture province in the game. Hmmmm...".

Next thing you know my personal flag is flying over the Vatican

The Vatican donation prompt only appears for France and Austria.

Napoleon made some pro-Vatican gestures (at least at first) to try to defuse the support that Catholics were giving to the Royalists in the Vendee (as I understand it...)

The list of Catholic countries is:
{
Austria, Spain, Holland, Corsica, Flanders,
Italia, Lombardy, Papacy, Piedmont, Portugal, Sardinia,
Sicily, Tuscany, Veneto, Lorraine, Naples, France_Revolt
};

The amount of attitude increased is the amount of money donated divided by 8; the amount lost when refusing the gift is the amount donated divided by 6.

FWIW, we originally planned to have about 30 such random events in the game but didn't finish due to lack of time.

Thanks for the facts Eric ... I cannot believe nobody had asked before about this, I began wondering about the consequences the first time the event occured.

May we be seeing some more events in the v1.3 or expansion? Could we mod our own? (I did try looking for the vatican event but could not find a file)

You could probably add Bavaria to that list as well.

Holland? Dear Eric, Holland... We fought 80 years to get rid of those Spanish catholics. 1568-1648. Our whole war of independance started with smashing catholic statues. Holland the country of Calvijn (yes I know born in Geneva) and protestants. Holland which send William III to England in 1688 for the "glorious revolution". And still we have those protestant orange marches every year against the catholics in Northern Ireland, courtesy of the Dutch.....in 1672 France attacked the dutch because they thought we were heathens and gave refuge to other thinking and believing french. He got his ass whooped but that's another story.... Anyways if you could scrap the dutch from the catholic list in a future patch, we'd be happy. Also sprach a catholic born but for the rest non believing, heathen dutchie

Eric, you think you have time to add those other features in future patches?

I thought it was strange when I included it on the list originally, but I did it because I found it on a list of majority Catholic countries in 1800 (this was probably either in one of the Penguin historical atlases or in the New Oxford Atlas of World History), and it was under Catholic rule for most of the period.... but I bet that list might have considered "Holland" to be the united Netherlands, which would include many Catholics in the southern part, an area which I believe is largely in our province of Flanders.

I'll take it off the list!
