To all you pbem'ers out there.

We know that the game incorporates these so-called national characteristics which, in the old days for example, the Japanese would not retreat - and so on.

But have you noticed any National Characteristics in your opponents?

I really enjoy playing against Russian opponents because they are much more likely to side-swipe me with some totally unexpected tactic.

What is your impression?

By nationality, do you mean the actual nationality of the player, or the nationality that the player prefers to play as?

As far as actual player nationality goes, I'm not sure I can make any blanket statements! I've played people from a number of different countries, and until we've played a bit, it's hard to predict any kind of style or approach for a particular individual based on his country of origin. Depends on the individual!

As far as the nationality the player likes to play as ... well IMO certain nationalities require/attract certain approaches:

Assuming a pbem meeting engagement mid to late war period, USSR, and Japan seem to bring a brawling "pile 'em on regardless of losses!" approach, wheras Germany and Finland tend to favor a careful and conservative approach. US and Brits lie somewhere in the middle of that spectrum.

That's just my subjective impression!

Stuart, if you want to see some typical german tactics applied from a german then send me a PBEM file of your choice! ...currently trying to apply real world tactics from the many tactic manuals I purchased for a couple of months. Works great in the Combat Mission games, but did not try yet in SPWAW.

I would love to see somebody demonstrate a German advance in the western desert using armour and pak front tactics against a superior British armoured force, say June 1942 when the British forces were falling apart against Rommel's onslaught with tired and inferior forces?

Do you think this is possible in the SPWAW model?

btw, by 'superior' I mean a larger force - not necessarily a better force

I mean the actual nationality of the player.

I have been playing by email against (probably) most of the posters on the SPWAW forum since the days of SP1. Most players are, as you say, individual and unique but I accept pbem challenges from my Russian friends with a certain trepidation as they always seem to surprise me with some unexpected tactic.

Only if you set the victory conditions for a scenario accordingly. If Victory flags don´t play a role in a scenario (either through absence or very low point ones), then both opponents are required to destroy as much enemy units as possible to win the scenario. If the other human opponent (taking the Brits) is not aware of what the german player intends then the "luring into pak front" tactic might work. Against the AI it certainly works if there´s no victory flags on the map (or a single low point=30 one). Then you just need to show the AI some of your units and then it starts to hunt them down. Key point is "unit cost". The AI prefers to hunt down the high point ones first, regardless whther they can be destroyed or not.

In a test scenario I had set up a force of russian BT tanks against german King Tigers! In the first version the King Tigers had high unit cost (above 200) and there was only one 50 point VH on the map. Result: AIP Ignored the VH and was trying to hunt down the KT´s with all it had (...without major results off course). Version 2 had the scenario set up with a 200 pont VH and unit cost of the King Tigers set to below 50. Result: The AIP completely ignored the King Tigers and went straightly for the single VH. If you get the point stuff balanced in a scenario, you can pretty much get the AIP behave as you like most of the time.

As said in PBEM/H2H I think above mentioned tactics is only possible when both players know that only destroying enemy units is the key to win a scenario.
