Ahem, well - you kinda limited my suggestions, but I do have one for you that is garunteed to work - no fooling.

Exercise, working out. Hit the weights and hit the track...it WILL work if you put the effort and discipline into it....not that it'll be THE - MOST -FUN you ever had, but it will pay off oh so nicely in many was for the rest of your life.

Hi marky,

Totally agree with Big B, go for exercise - jogging, swimming, etc. Cut down on stimulants such as coke, pepsi, coffee and tea, smoking is no-no . You are young - you have many years ahead and keeping fit is one good and cheap way to live a life- healthcare cost is very expensive. I wish I do what I say. Maybe I will run the marathon.. after practising for many months of course - boy running sure make me feel sleepy.
Cheers!

Any free clinics or can you afford to go to a doctor? I know a girl who has insomnia and she was given some medication to help her.

Also ... you under any kind of stress that could be making you not be able to sleep? Stress can do wierd things at times.

The most iimportant thing I've found, and I'm not so hot-wired anymore, is to simply try to eat and do the same things at the same times every day. IOW, the most important points are like an hour before you go to bed and when you're actually in bed. Don't do anything in that last hour that might excite you. Do the calmest thing you have to do at that time. I need not say that you also should watch what hours you take on caffeine and what not. Avoid sugars big time at that hour till, or even earlier. Also don't eat anything that late that will conflict possibly with your stomach, like hot sauces.

In my case regularity of that last hour and going to bed the same hour help immensely. I'm working 3rd shift right now and it's quite a breeze if you do this. I would also urge that you DON'T take naps at any point of the day. Just find some way to stay awake such as a short loud noise to change the pace of what's around you, then get back to whatever it was you were doing. Also know that if you wake and just can't go back to sleep, that the next day's sleep will very likely be much easier.

I suspect you're greatest enemy, however, is the one-more-turn menace, of whatever game you may be playing. In my case I've stopped playing on the computer at least 45 minutes before I hit the hay (yeah, the results on the computer can excite at times). Despite everything else I've said, if you can conquer the one-more-turn menace and go to bed at the same time EVERY NIGHT your worries are largely over. Nerves will still hit you every once in a while and wake you up, as they do me now, but that happens irrespective of your sleeping habits to some degree. I know it must be difficult for you, afterall I remember being 20 and there was no such thing as sleeping regular with me, and I wanted to stay up late simply because my job at the time demanded it, but also because since I was living with my parents then it was just simply at time for some freedom, but then I didn't realize the advantages of a consistent sleep either.

The best advice yet:

Just login every time you're ready to go to bed. Put the monitor by your head in your bed if you must (preferable to falling asleep in the computer chair, since falling out of chair could cause permanent sleep or ruptured limbs) and stare at the following smiley endlessly until you can't stare no more:

Smiley to stare at>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Failing that perhaps Matrix could come up with a screensaver of fence-leaping sheep or something to help insomniacs.

Thanks Charles_22,

Work stress can really get to one. On the other hand a lot of us just don't have enough sleep, well at least quality sleep. That is modern day life - demands of being a father, husband, co-worker, WITP PBEM partner etc. Relying on sleeping pills is bad (provided you can get a doctor to prescribe for you).

Cheers!

Hi,

I suppose the weather plays a part. Here in Singapore, the weather is hot and humid practically all year round, so if you don't sleep in air-conditioning - you just can't sleep!I don't sleep in a/c because of sinus while my wife and daughter sleeps in a/c. I think up in US or Europe the weather should be condusive to sleep esp the winter months.

This a little personal but, The advice given to me while in the Navy was:
1-Read for a little bit.
2-Rub one out.
3-Repeat as necessary.

Steps 1 and 2 may be switched.

Get in a hot bath and make certain that you lower you head into the water so that hot water hits your ear drum. Hold that position for about a minute your nose and mouth should be above the water line.

Make sure you go to bed at the same time every night and get up a the same time everyday. Don't watch T.V. and make sure your room is dark. Try reading an old boring text book, seriously. Exersize in the morning when you wake up, not before you go to bed. Something else that you might want to try is a supplement called melatonin. Your body makes this stuff naturally and this is what makes you feel sleepy. You just might not be making enough of this stuff your self and a little boost may be needed. You can get this stuff at any store that sells dietary supplements and is pretty cheap. It is non-habitual and safe. I use it when I get stuck in that non sleep mode. Good luck
