Just saw "Richard III" movie (MGM 1995 with Ian McKellan). This was done using the original dialogue, but with costumes, props pretty much from the interwar (mid -late 30's) period (of course with lots of anachronisms).

In the latter part of the movie, the Queen-Mother gets on the most spectacularly ugly airplane i've seen in motion - some sort of hideous biplane transport that the Handley Page Handford brought to mind. Unfortunately, AFAIK, they did not give a credit to the airplane (but i'd sure like to know what it was!) Anyone else see this or know what it was? (The movie is playing on Starz or Showtime this month).

I vaguely remember the scene, was it a quite pretty De Havilland Dragon Rapide, there are still a number of these flying

Well, that hardly qualifies as an ugly aeroplane...

IIRC - the nose was the ugly part (which is not seen here).

Also, i am not certain this was the same model plane (although maybe it was). It was painted an OD green-brown, and that may also have contributed to hideous impression it made on me.

EDIT: The more i look at it, the less likely it seems it was one of these, unless they "dressed it up" (or more accurately, down). However, i have been wrong more than once!!

REEDIT: IIRC, the airplane in the movie was larger and boxier.

Arghh - going to have to watch this again, just for the airplane. If i can get a recording of it (on a DVD), i can put it on my computer and do a screen capture.

Actually the design has certain advatages especially for certain types of operations. The engines mounted on the lower wing make them easier to work on, nice if you're in remote areas.

Looking at it from this angle - maybe it was this guy. I just thought the low engines, "leggings" on the fixed landing gear, and it was painted a ugly green-brown, it looked pretty ugly. I thought the plane in the movie had a kinda flat nose, though, but maybe i am disremembering it (or maybe they made it more ugly for the movie).

EDIT - Still remember it as being larger.

Well, recorded the movie (Richard III), and that was indeed the airplane. Somehow, i think, in my brain i mixed (i.e. combined) this one with the one from "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome". Watching it, though, is strange as it seems highly maneuverable compared to other transport aircraft.

"Fantasy of Flight"? More like "Horrible, Mushroom-induced Nightmare of Flight"!
