OK day 1 of the air battle and I lose 2 in the air of rested pilots at 22,000 feet and I lose 2 for 1 all my pilots are 60+ and the tomahawk gp is 75+

I lose 60 he loses 30+

Not a disaster but thats a lot of enemy airframes and with the best will n the world my pools are tight

Pauk makes a comment that I am finally willing to come out and fight I am frankly slightly irritated by this.

I have attacked at Perth and Tarawa in Burma and at Narau and he doesnt react but this is finally classed as an attack.

I think he expects me to attack with insufficient resources and pools that cannot sustain a long fight well I hate to say it but he may be right I cannot stop 200+ Tonies and Tojos with my pools so weak of all fighter types.

Day 2

OK I had 200 of my best fighters in this fight and today I lost another 60 in the air and 40 on the ground.

IJA lost about 60.

My pools are empty P40E's and B's have no replacements, Spits have about 20 left but cannot take on replacements in Chungking

P38 Pool is empty only the F4F's have sufficinet replacements

The battle is over I am pulling out so far I have shot down slightly more than 1:1 when you inculde the bombers of earlier days and overall I have lost 1:1 so I have to be happy.

Against 200+ Tonies and Tojos I cannot stand and fight as the bombers will always get through so I am pulling out tonight.

About 50 fighters will be destroyed on the ground but so be it.

I have learned a lesson in this battle and that is that I need to use fighters with more depth in their pools.

Accordingly 2 Marine Wildcat Sqns are moving towards Aus where they will be transferred to India. In 30 days those Sqns become F4U's at this point I will try again to regain air superiority over Chungking

p.s. payback will be a wonderfull thing when my B24's and 17's return the favour

Andy

Day 3 its all over 40+ destreoyed on the ground

Pauk claims to see AAR's where the allies successfully go on the offensive in late 42 without unacceptable losses my riposte would be allies can only attack in 1 of 2 circumstances.

1. Operational Surprise is achieved and 4 - 5 days before IJN can intervene
2. In LBA range i.e. LRCAP range of P38's and extended range of wildcats so say range 5 form allied bases.

Anything that depends on Carrier borne Wildcats stopping zeroes is a a joke and a risk not worth taking as the allies.

Am I being too cautious every time I tried to fight toe to toe in 42 I have lost so I may be scarred by previous losses

I am also assembling 1st Australian Corps at Townsville its dual role is protection of the East Coast and prepping for PM

6th Aus Div
7th Aus Div
9th Aus Div
27th US Div

As you all know from my game versus PZB I like having prepped troops with minimum 2 full Inf Divs and armour for each invasion.

All three of my offensive Corps that are starting to assemble will have 4 Divisions of Infantry but will be short of armour so I will need to be carefull.

Options are Gili Gili, Port Moresby, Solomons or an early attack on the Marshalls all three are being considered I will have plenty of ground forces its getting them to the target safely thats the problem

The 2 Sqns of Wildcats have arrived at Perth I am loading them onto Saratoga who will deliver them with Illustrious for escort to India (they will be F4U's in 30 days !!!)

I will take the opportunity to put Saratogas group back on board as they have been orphaned in India since the early days Saratoga and Illustrious will then operate as part of Eastern Fleet supporting Valient at Colombo.

Formidable, Indomitable and Hermes are still at Perth the Battleline is moving back towards the fleet base at Adeilade ready to support my invasion of PM (7BB's 1BC)

As soon as Perth generates some more fuel I will return the carriers to Adeilade as well.

My Ground Units are assembling I think I will use the Suva based Corps for the invasion as I want to retain the New Cal Corps until I am certain I know what Paul is upto

The plan is to hit Gili Gili with 1 Australian Division from 1st Aus Corps then land a full US 4 Divison Crops onto PM

Last few turns have been quiet we are in the slow phase of the game before the allies are really ready to attack.

3rd US Corps and 9th US Corps are asembling at New Cal and Fiji and there is almost enough fuel at Perth for the remaining RN Carriers to withdraw to Adeilade. I have felt very exposed at Perth waiting for the fuel to build up enough to send my ships to safer ports.

MY 2 Sqns of Marine F4F's are on their way to India ready to convert to F4U's in time for the next little attempt to win air superiority over Chungking.

I am resting my best pilots and waiting and watching for my opportunity

If Pauk gives me half a chance he will have a hell of a fight in the Air over China !!!!

Well at least you still hold most of Burma and China........1943 is the best time for the allied player as you start to draw blood from the Japs.....and it gets better and better as the year rolls on.   I just got my first P-47s and the RN Fleet Air Arm are about to convert to Corsairs.  Hellcats in another few months even better !

Yup all the toys to come but I have decided not to wait.

Port Moresby has suffered under the Japanese yoke for to long already its time to kick open the road to Rabaul.

Pauk has an upgrade cycle coming in February and I am going to exploit it.

All my carriers are upgraded and the RN Eastern Fleet sailed for Adeilade after finally gettign enough fuel to make the journey.

It all hinges on assmebling the cargo and amphib capacity in time.

The plan is for US 1st Corps (1st Marines and 2 US Army plus 1 Aus Army Div) to hit PM while either 9th US Corps or 1st Aus Corps hit Gili Gili and one of the islands in the area.

More to follow when I have assembled all forces

Last few turns have been quiet.

Essex Joins the US South Pacific Fleet at Suva

1st Carrier TF, US South Pacific Fleet - Suva - Wasp, Hornet
2nd Carrier TF, Eastern Fleet - Karachi - Yorktown, Illustrious, Victorious
3rd Carrier TF, RN Pacific Fleet - Adeilade Indomitable, Formidable, Hermes
4th Carrier TF, US South Pacific Fleet - Suva - Enterprise, Essex
5th Carrier TF, US South Pacific Fleet - Suva - Saratoga, Lexington

Add to that 16 BB's or BC's (4 RN, 12 USN) between the two fleets also the RN has 13 Cruisers, RAN 8, Dutch 4 and the USN 31 Cruisers in theatre.

Main RN/RAN/Dutch Base is at Adeilade
Main USN Base is at Suva

They will combine for the operations against Gili Gili and PM

KB has been spotted on teh convoy route from India so I am glad I relocated the fleet to Adeilade I wonder if he was going to try something there.

Hmmmm as long as he is running up sys damage I am happy

OK starting to gather forces I will have about 150,000 men involved in the operation planning to hit Gili Gili with 2 Divs, 3 Divs at PM and I have a FT full of raiders to try and grab other bases in the area while I am at it.

Probably about a week before I will be ready to advance I am slowly building an AF at Charter Towers, Cooktown and Townsville P38's Spits, Hudsons and some heavies.

OK time to get ready.

The RN is almost in position and only waits on the US Pacific Fleet

RN Pacific Fleet

1 x Carrier TF - Indomitable, Formidable, Hermes with POW, Australia, 3 x Southhampton Class CL's and several DD's and a pair of old CLAA's. (42 Seafires, 53 Swordfish)

2 x Surface TF's

A Warspite, Revenge, Leander, Du Ruyter, Hobart and 7 RN DD's
B Repulse, Canberra, Dorsetshire, Exeter, and 7 RN/RAN/Dutch DD's

I expect the heavy surface combat lifting to be done by the RN I dont want to rely on the USN to take on Japanese ships in night surface action.

USN South Pacific Fleet

3 x Carrier TF's

Hornet/Wasp with Washington, 1 x CA, 2 x CL and 5 DD's for screen
Essex/Enterprise with Sodak, 1 x CA, 2 x CL and 5 DD's for screen
Lexington/Saratoga with North Carolina, 1 x CA, 2 x CL and 5 DD's for screen

4 x Surface Combat TF

3 of 1 x CA and 7 DD's
1 of Indiana, 2 x CA, 3 x CL and 4 x DD

2 x Bombardment TF
Colorado, Arizona, California, Missispi, 3 x CL, 4 x DD
WV, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, New Mexico, 3 x CA, 3 x CL, 3 x DMS

Replenishment TFhas 3 CVE and 1 CVR with screen and fleet oilers

So I am taking this invasion seriously.

13 Carriers (8 Fleet Carriers, 1 Light Carrier, 3 Escort Carriers and 1 Replenishment Carrier.)
16 Battleships (3 RN Battleships and 1 Battlecruiser, 4 Modern USN BB's and 8 dld ones)

I am not even going to bother counting the Cruisers or Destroyers !!!!

Ground Units committed are 2 full Corps

1st USMC Div, 2nd USMC Div, 24th US Div, 32nd US Div, 40th US Div and 43rd US Div

Now I would not try this this early against an atoll as I am using far to many AP's on this invasion but I want enough force to guarantee capturing Gili Gili and PM

Well I am slightly nervous as I dont really want to lose any carriers at this stage as it makes the late 43 offensive tough so I am going to be very very carefull Seafires on 90% CAP F4F's on 70%.

So total 40 Seafires and roughly 190 F4F's plus I will try LRCAP from Cooktown when in range......

That leaves about 80 F4F's and 4 Seafires for escort duties

Let's just hope that KB wohn't join up the party. I did have CAP of 200 fighters available and Japanese navy eat them for lunch.

Otherwise I think it is an wise move to capture Gili Gili and Port Moresby. This will basically isolate a large number of enemy troops in Southern Pacific.

Fingers crossed that all goes as planned!

OK well Pauk is back and time moves on my Fleet is inposition and will land c 100,000 men onto Port Moresby.

This is the first real operation the allies have tried and is backed by an impressive fleet and carrier force so here goes nothing !!!

A second Corps of 40k will sit at sea ready to assault Gili Gili after I secure PM.

FT's are heading at full speed for the islands off of Gili Gili.

IN additoin a daring raid by the joint USN/RN Eastern Fleet will hit Palembang Harbour tomorrow !!!!

I dont think I am spotted I hope not if all tgoes well the 3 carriers of this TF will destroy several valuable tankers

Well it has begun 1st US Corps with 4 Divs landed at PM this and managed to get ashore in good shape.

It is looking good for taking PM

The raid on Palembang didnt work as anticipated.

Illustrious ate a torpedo and is able to make 3/3 so I may need to leave her behind.

I did manage to savage some AO's so that was good and will restrict IJN deep strikes for a while

I will try a deliberate attack tomorrow

Mines are hurting but the deliberate attack got 1:1 on first attack so with more troops landed I will order a shock attack for tomorrow.

No sign at all of KB but given my experience in the PZB game even at this early stage I am going to be very very carefull with my Naval Pilot pool.

Yeah, definately be aware of KB. I have a feeling that it can't be that far off from Port Moresby.

Hopefully you can conquer to base quickly so you will top class operational LBA airfield in the area.

Intresting to see what happens with this operation and what the Japanese defensive plan in this theatre actually is.

OK confession time I have messed up a little at PM.

Because I had shipped my 2 marine Corsairs that were in Aus to India for my next attempt at regaining air superiority I didnt have sqns immediately available to gain air superioriy over PM.

I had 4 Sqns of Spits ready but they dont have the range (I am to used to Spit VIII's now !!!!).

My P38's were trying it alone and it didnt work.

I have 3 Sqns of P38's at Cooktown and 1 of P40's

3 Sqns of NZ Corsairs have just unloaded at Brisbane and my 4 Sqns of Spits will move onto Wasp for a Malta style reinforcement.

The plan is for 3 Sqns of NZ Corsairs, 3 of P38's and 1 of P40 backed by 4 Sqns of Spits to go in as one force and re establish air superiority in a few days....

Watch this space for more details.

So far so good yes I am losing lots of planes but that doesnt concern me forcing Pauk to expend his current crop of super elite pilots is.

Its costing me a lot to do it but its working he is fighting over PM and yes I am losing a lot of pilots and planes but my lossses are Corsairs, Warhawks, F4F's and Lightnings all types that my pools can cope with I wonder how much longer Pauk can afford to let his reserve elite pilots get shot down.

I may withdraw to rebuild in a few days but for now lets keep going the more top pilots I kill now are less that I will need to face when I attack over Rabaul

OK I Lost more fighters I am losing about 2 for 1 in the air which is fine but my groups are now at nothing although they all have about 70% pilots left so I am pulling them out to rebuild rearm and then go back in.

I want Pauk to fight it out at PM I need to destroy that elite pilot crop Pauk has things will get easier after I do.
