p.s. my attack against Mandalay was interesting.

I have about 6 Divisions in the line plus an armoured Bde

IJA has about 5 Divisions and 1 Armoured Bde facing me behind lvl 9 forts.

My adjusted assault for about 500 IJA's was 10,000. I doubt my men will be able to take mandalay when facing that kind of strength.

My engineers managed to reduce the forts 1 level so it is only lvl 8 forts now but I cannot count on that roll working in my favour 8 more times.

I will bring up 12th Army into the line in a few days to see if they can make a difference.

Andy

Perhaps a nice naval landing in Rangoon?

I thought about it I have 3 Divs prepping for it now and after my deception attack of a few days ago he wouldnt expect it.

BUT Illustrious is out for a few months and 3 Carriers is not enough anyway.

I am going to go for it at Gili Gili.

Yunan looks to have a few aircraft on it nice big red AF symbol so I am turning my attention that way. Sweep ordered and my Heavies will go in tomorrow.

Corsairs on Sweep Ligthnings and Beaufighters on Escort

oooh Pauk was trying to defend Mandalay !!!

I lose 111 aircraft (but that includedes Boomerangs and Dakotas of which I have plenty) Pauk loses 90+ including 74 pilots !!!!

Victory to the allies methinks.

Pauk has probably found out that the force in the Torres straight is a deception he sank some empty barges !!!

I am turning the fleet around to rendevous with the fleet off of PM to move towards Gili Gili.

Gili Gili is 3 days steaming from my current postions but I have not yet committed to going in yet I really want to attrit KB a little before I do.

So I may move and fade a little for a few days to try and draw his carriers into B24 range.

I have 1 Sqns of Thuds and 4 of P38's at PM all resting at present to try and repair damaged aircraft.

I have equivalent of 2 BG's of B24's and 1 of B25C on various jobs. The 24's are VERY experienced ave 75 xp (lots of LR Naval Search has built there xp). The B25C's are at about 60xp.

I would really like to use LBA to attrit his pilots before committing carriers. Zeroes attacking Liberators will suffer a lot of damaged aircraft from the box defence which would make any cdarriers vulnerable the next day if I can time it correct.

Not quite ready to roll the dice and just go for it yet but it is getting closer.

Andy

No turn just the combat

My forces continue to advance on Mandalay.,

I am convinced going toe to toe with massed KB is not worth the risk at present.

But I do want Gili Gili.

Forces should be one day away when I get the turn perhaps 2 I think I will linger and try and tempt enemy forces into range of LBA at PM

All my P38's and P47's are resting and getting maintenance I want as many range 6+ fighter as possible readyt for a few days trime

all my deception plans and false leads have probably been wasted and not achieved anything except burn up my fuel my fleet will be concentrating in the next 2 days and then heading for Gili Gili.

I may perform a little bit of bob and weave or go straight in to unload I havent decided yet

OK Lets see what happens I estimate today or tomorrow we have the mother of all carrier battles

I have 9 carrier TF's at sea from the RN Pacific and USN South Pacific Fleet.

6 US Fleet Carriers
1 US CVL
2 RN Fleet Carriers
1 RN CVL
5 Escort Carriers
14 Battleships (4 RN)
45 Cruisers (16 RN/RAN, 3 Dutch, 26 USN)
I have not even counted the Destroyers and screening elements

The begining of the carrier battle my bombers were out of range but the extra 120 Wildcats on the escort carriers come in handy adding about 70 to the CAP

Lack of co ordination really hurats the IJN as several bomber sqns come in unescorted into massed fighter cover (MY Sqns are on 70% CAP btw)

pfff... It hurts... it hurts... This is a bit of an overstatement I think... I would love to lose 250 Wildcats every day for such a result... KB's offensive capability is gone... In stock just sitting with CAP without attacking is the way to win, in RL, the Allies could only afford that once jap offensive capability was blunted, a la Philippine sea battle, not before.

Anyway, once again you outsmarted your opponent in CV battle.. Congrats.

I dont have any fighters that operate out to range 5 so my options were limited I had my fighters at 70% CAP and lost 250 out of 350 thats a hell of an attrition rate.

I am surprised my fighter cap I had set all Wildcats to 70% but by my rough calc I had 86% of all fighters on CAP and I needed every one of them.

As I mentioned I am slightly concerned I had my CAP at 70% but by my count it was 86% that launched. I suspect my lack of counter strikes helped me here range 4 worked in my favour.

I reckon I will have 100 ish left but I have a replacement Gp at PM and over 100 fighters that can LRCAP the invasion hex so I will probably re organise my sqns and go on in at least my strike aircraft are in one piece

IMO Pauk made a mistake not waiting until I had committed he should have came in with everything in one force and tried to get into Kate ordinary range insteadt he fought a LR Battle allowing me to fight defensively. LR Battles cause problems for co ordination if you wat a decisive battle close to knife range and go for it at range 2

Pauk fell between 2 stools a LR Threat was a viable tactic or going in to hit me at range 2 in Kate range.

Setting up for LR attacks is the worst of all worlds because of co ordination, enhanced allied cap reaction time and extra fatigue

I didn’t want this battle but I do want Gili Gili

I still don’t know how bad my Sqns are but I would expect him to withdraw and try to attack with fast surface and LR LBA strikes from Rabaul/Torokina and Buin.

My strong impression is lack of co ordination goes up a great deal with range so a Long Range engagement is a big mistake in carrier operations as you get more un co-ordinated strikes

Close to knife range and go for the guts.

IMO he really needed to force this engagement 6 months ago by forcing me to fight for something I had to hold by being so passive in late 42 I was able to sit back and wait he is paying for it now as my carriers all have upgraded radar.

OK well this was a bit of a disaster for phase 2

A LOT more mines than I expected and my MSW force did not go in and my transports got hurt hard.

Independece hits a mine at PM

New Mexico takes 4 Torpedos
Missispi 3 Torpedoes
Pennsylvania 2 Torpedos
Revenge and Repulse 1 each

5 Capital ships out of 14 BB's hit by betties

LR CAP just cannot do the job

OK well this was a bit of a disaster for phase 2

A LOT more mines than I expected and my MSW force did not go in and my transports got hurt hard.

According to the combat report there were no MSW in the invasion TFs. Don't understand this, were they just not shown in the .txt or did you have all MSW in separate TFs? MSW in invasion TFs tend to sweep mines even better than dedicated Mine Warfare TFs (at least in my PBEM).

I had a MSW TF supposed to go in but they dissapeared off NW on there lonesome there were integral MSW's as well just not enough.

New Mexico is sunk, Missisipi is 60% sys, the rest are ok its annoying but not critical.

Unlike the game with PZB in the same position I still have 12 Operational BB's on station having 1 sunk is not a bad loss for an F4F backed invasion in the teeth of KB

My carriers will have re armed with fighters and be back on station tomorrow (I ran them into PM last night where they will all re arm with full compliments of fighters and return) I will withdraw the damaged units and reconcentrate my carriers into a place where they can hurt the Japanese if Pauk sends in his surface fleet.

POW/Warspite/Indiana and Washington and the rest of the RN surface fleet are still in good shape on overwatch for Jap BB's while the less capable USN BB's perform further shore bombardment

Another painfull turn to watch I am not losing a lot of ships but many are picking up damage which could make them easy game for surface TF's or a carrier raid.

I am sending my re fightered carriers back into harms way I have about 100 operational fighters and my carriers repair about 75 a day so tomorrow I will have 175 available which will allow more risks to be taken.

Prince of Wales is ok minimal damage from the torp SODAK is at 60 sys and may not make it.

So far Gili gili has been expensive even after my errant MSW TF returns to the fold why they went the other way I will never know.

I may move my carriers into harms way tomorrow to try and distract any surface ambitions Pauk may have

The fact is he is SOOO carefull about his pilots that I doubt he will have re equipped KB yet he will be moving his pilots slowly to the front to help his naval pilots so I think I can take some risks

Allies

Sunk
1 x BB (New Mexico)
3 x CA (Louisville/ Salt Lake City/ Dorsetshire)
3 x DD

Crippled and at risk
1 x BB (Mississippi)
1 x CLAA (Colombo)
7 x DD

Crippled, Heavy or Moderate Damage these should make it subject to subs and enemy action
3 x BB (Revenge, SODAK, Pennsylvania)
1 x BC (Repulse)
2 x CA (Minneapolis/Astoria)
1 x CVL (Independence)
1 x CVE (Copahee)
6 x DD

Japanese

Sunk
2 x CA (Atago/ Aoba)
1 x CL (Sendai)
4 x DD

Damaged in action extent unknown so I have estimated

Crippled and at risk
1 x CA (Kako)
1 x CL (Natori)
2 x DD

Other Damage

3 x DD

The tonnage favours the Japanese but if all my cripples make it safely to port I will call the losses in my favour I doubt that Kako will make it and I think Mississippi will.

I have 5 fresh BB's (2 with 16") at Pearl just finishing off refits so I can pretty much replace all my losses very quickly.

And that makes 24 sunk Jap DD's how many more can they afford to lose before they struggle for screening units.

In the next 30 days I get 1 BB, 2 Cruisers 2 Light Carriers 15 DD's and 2 CVE's so my losses are made good almost immediately

OK looks like all my BB's got home in one piece.

I will have to wait for float damage to dissapear before starting the long trek to West Coast Yards.

My carriers have re armed and are ready for action

Gili Gili is going to be tougher than I thought but I have additional forces available to send in once I have reorganised my TF's

Pauk is a miner so I will need to take care and bring losts of MSW's.

Allied troops are almost at Buna after crossing the mountains so I hope to take that town soon.

With Buna in my control Dobodura will follow quicky isolating Gili Gili.

Mandalay is not going to work now Pauk has reinforced to quickly....

However that is not neccesarily a bad thing... Old plans are being dusted off a long range plan to consider.

Pauk has lots of Ground forces in Australia
Pauk now has a large army at Mandalay

Pauk therefore cannot have massive reserves

I have 1 full Corps in India still (3rd Div/44th Div/26th Div and armour)  and 1 spare Corps in Australia.
Allies get Hellcats and Corsair IV soon.

If Pauk has stripped all of lower Burma/Malaya to defend Rangoon I may have opportunities

Andy

I like a prolonged combat at Mandalay, at times, to build up the experience level of your Indian/CW/British troops.
The bad thing for the Japanese is the don't get any additional CA's or BB's (after Yamato and Co.).

Aye but I doubt I will break through now but thats ok !!!

A little Corsair/Hellcat supported landing at Moulmien with 3 - 6 Divs into his rear could cause lots of problems
