I have 80 days to prepare as troops are shipped in and gotten ready so I have time.

Wake will be able to take 5 Groups of B29's so I need to preposition supplies, fuel and av support and an air HQ on Wake ready to take them and the fleet as this will be an important base.

Wake based B29's can support the attack.

IF I go for the Marianas (still not sure of the strategic relevance) or Bonins then those Wake Based B29's will provide very important AF suppression - something I missed in my game against PZB.

I may examine the possibility of securing a more advanced base able to operate B29's in the Marshalls as well if I can do so at low cost.

I think that the Marshalls are probably an empty shell by now, Pauk wouldn't leave many troops there to be POWs,, so you can probably clean up quite a few of these islands with not to many forces... if you can then have several airfields able to support your invasion of the Marianas, it makes it easier.

I know that you feel that the Marianas are not that relevant right now, but one of the difficulties you have faced in this game have come from the fact that, frustrated by the turn of events and especially the situation at Mandalay, you did not advance methodically enough. It is easy for me to say that, I am not in your shoes, but you should have taken the Andaman Is and Sabang and from there secured all northern Sumatra, and from ther either go to Moulmein/Tavoy, Malaya, or, hiding behind SUmatra, krept up to Java to make a link with Oz.

Now you find your self in a situation similar to that in Iwo against PZB : Many divisions stranded on an island that can't be used efficiently in the time being (the island there being the Bandou-VP-Songkhia triangle), and that are isolated enough that you can't provide water tight air protection to them...

Go For Tinian with 15 divisions.. then mop up the rest of the Marianas and advise as to were to go from there.

Yup hard to disagree frustration led to idiocy but we will go on.

If I am just going for the Marianas then I probably dont need to wait for 80 days.

I will have 15 ish Divs at Pearl in 20 days and in 56 days I will have 3 Fleet, 3 Light and 31 Escort Carriers and 10 BB's.....

I just need to keep Pauks attention on the West for a while longer

Eastern Fleet is reorganisng its Battle Line is sgtill healthy but a lot of Cruisers and DD's are badly damaged

It has 1 operational fleet and 1 light carrier with 2 escorts for back up.

Not enough to take on KB.

Operating in India is hard because of the low repair yards.

I have scattered moderatly damaged DD's and CL/CA's in ports up and down the coast and am trying to re focus onto a strong force at Colombo.

Defensively the Colombo Sqn will have about 160 fighters of which 54 are F4U's

and only 20 ish Barracudas for strike duty.

2 other carriers are crippled and need serious yard time but the journey back to the west coast is long and difficult.

Wooo hooo a development allied forces got a 1 to 1 at Mandalay knocking a level of forts off (I am still unlucky with engineeer rolls) so be it if I can break through in the north then it c hanges the entire war in the north.

Supplies are low and it takes about 3 days to restockpile combat supply levels but I will keep going until I secure Mandalay.

Strategically if Mandalay falls Pauk has a problem no where north of Rangoon is defendable.

So that means possibly standing at Rahaeng/Moulmien but thats risky with 14th Army in his rear at VP.

In the meantime CENTPAC concentration continues 15 Divs are now at Pearl with 4 en route from SPAC and 3 from West Coast when they arrive its time to rock and roll !!!!

Sledgehammer time no more messing with corps or divional assaults its Army Group over the beaches time !!!!

Heheh Pauk hits his own mines !!!!

But the Japs clear out my PT Boats and the co ordination fails.

I have lost the last few days results the gist is I am reorganisning my AF for an all out push in two directions.

1. Mandalay - most of the RAF (Lib IV and USAAF Medium (Mitchells) bomber force is now redeploying from forward AF's back to Burma where backed by FB's and every frame I can find we are going on a 2 week long burst in support of 12th Armies next attack on Mandalay.

All Transport A/C in theatre are now at Ledo and are ferrying in supplies for all they are worth.

This very importantly frees up space at VP for my surprise package.

2. Sumatra - Initial raids against Palembang have been a draw at best well its time to change that B24's based at Medan have done damage but they have suffered heavy losses and have been witrhdrawn.

I am concentrating most of my LR Fighter Escorts and trying to rest them to get operational numbers up I want 150 at each AF on Sumatra ready to go.

In 11 days 4 Full Bomber Groups of B29's arrive at Karachi. Thats 200 B29's now I will have enough B29's by then to equip one other Group from the pool. So in exactly 14 Days (Eagle Day) I will have 250 Operational B29's at VP locked cocked and ready to rock !!!!.

The allied carrier and surface fleet is now moving to Bankha including all carriers. which will allow Hellcat and Corsair escorts as well.

The PLAN

Option 1 Flatten Palembang once and for all everything at that base in one almighty wave.

Option 2 Attack deeper targets like Brunei, Tarakan etc bases with Oil production and then after the initial surprise is gone crucify Palembang.

Option 3 Attack Pauks Chinese Airforce Bases try to reopen Chengtu and then 2 and 1

Any thoughts ?

I want the B29's to crucify Pauk and drag his attnetion westward again. After the initial raids 50% of the active 29's and all future replacements are heading for Wake to get ready for the Marianas assault.

p.s. yes I have taken the advice offered I am going to throw a massive sledgehammer right down Pauks throat and take the Marianas - whatever the cost

15 Divs supported by 14 Armoured Bns should make a dent on his defences

"After the initial raids 50% of the active 29's and all future replacements are heading for Wake"

These are the new "amphibious B-29's" I'm guessing. I know it works in the game, but I want to cringe everytime I see a statement like this..... The thought of hundreds of B-29's trying to even find a place to park on Wake Atoll is just too much.

Good luck, Andy..., hope you suprise and clobber him.

Well we are playing fantasy in the pacific already so I dont feel overly constrained on this I will base 200 ish B29's on Wake and will use them to suppress AF's.

Could Wake have coped with B29's IRL not sure we play the game as is not how we would want it to be

'shrugs'

I agree Andy. Far too much a-historical stuff here to worry about something like that.

Just go in hard and decisively!

I think the target will be Tarakan in the 1st instance I have now got over 150 P38's resting at Bankha awaiting their opportunity to strike back.

Enterprise and Hornet have arrived at Perth with 2 BB's and escort and will proceed to West Coast for repairs.

I am awaiting the arrival of 6th USMC Div at San Francisco and I will be ready for an attempt on the Marianas.

I need to work out which forces will be going in the first wave.

34 LST's per Div I think allows me 4 Divs combat loaded.
25 AK's per Div allows another 4 Divs combat loaded
3 AK's per Armoured Regt will allow 10 Armoured Regts
with an HQ, a base force and an aviation regt on AP's and probably a further 2 Divs

This means an assault force of

1 Army HQ
2 Corps HQ
1 Amphib Force
9 Divs
10 Armoured Regts
3 Arty Regts
1 Aviation Regt
1 Base Force
2 Combat Engineer Regt

When the final ship count is in I will translate it into formations committed to the attack.

I think III Amphib Corps and XI US Corps will be the assaulting formations but I will need to review this.

The only issue with Tinian is that it is predictable... It is the best place to go....so it will be heavily mined and probably have good CD guns

9 Divs and 10 Armoured Regts is only 4,000 AV.

Assuming Pauk has 1,000 AV and lvl 9 forts that means I need to overcome 3,000 AV to take the place probably without total A/S.

Its not going to be easy I would really prefer another 6 Divisions to lift it up to 6,000 AV in the first wave but to much shipping has been diverted to the Western theatre (part of me is regretting my decision to go West with most of SWPAC)

The only good news is that I think Tinian is an island and therefore no auto shock attack to wreck my forces.

I think I will be ready to begin loadong inside 20 days

Forts at Mandalya now lvl 6

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Mandalay

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 194007 troops, 968 guns, 1083 vehicles, Assault Value = 2707

Defending force 81374 troops, 562 guns, 137 vehicles, Assault Value = 1767

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 6

Allied max assault: 2633 - adjusted assault: 3090

Japanese max defense: 1486 - adjusted defense: 5139

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 6)

Japanese ground losses:
1630 casualties reported
Guns lost 56
Vehicles lost 47

Allied ground losses:
4872 casualties reported
Guns lost 71
Vehicles lost 6

I need to wait for disrtuption to fall again.

13th Indian Bde is a shadow it is moving to yktina for air evac.

96th Chinese Corps is being flown in to Burma from India where it reconstituted, 5th Indian Div which has finished rebuilding at Calcutta is moving to the Ledo airhead the next rotation will involve pulling out 18th UK Div and Sparrow Force Bn and replacing them with 5th Indian Div.

A Chindit Bde is nearly ready for action so after the next attack I will need to pull out one of the shattered Bdes for a rest and replace them with the retrained Bde.

(Rotation is the only way I am keeping my force up to strength on the Mandalay front)

If I can break through at Mandalay it reaaly messes with Pauks defences I suspect he will have to give up Rangoon which would be a big victoy - a non malaria Port in Burma gives Pauk a LOT of problems

13th Canadian Bde, 44th Indian Bde and 5th Indian Div are moving to the airhead.

I recieve the first 4 African Bdes in the next 30 days they will rotate in as soon as they arrive at Ledo from Karachi.

Units needing rotation back to Calcutta.

200th Chinese Div
1st Burma Bde
2nd Burma Bde
45th Indian Bde
16th Chindit
23rd Chindit
BFF
251st UK
13th Indian Bde

Thus after the next deliberate attack I will need to pause until tyhe Africans get on scene as my forces are reaching critical levels at Mandalay they are just getting to worn down and need a rest.

I am treating my men worse than Macarthur treated the Aussies at present and they need rest

Just in case anyone is wondering about the mix of USAAF Sqns

At present I am operating

3 x B29 Super Heavy Sqns (with 1 awaitring conversion)
34 x B24 D or J's Sqns
45 x Medium Sqns Mithcells or Marauders
1 x Light Sqn (A20's)

I promised Pauk I would not go nuts on switching 2E to 4E (despite what he is doing to his fighters !!!)

I have the planes to upgrade everything to 24J's but I haven't and won't. (the B25J's are actually better at some things anyway)

The mix will change as more 29's activate (16 Sqns in next 2 days alone !!!)

And so it begins.....

5 BG's of B29's are ordered to hit Balikapan's Oil refineries win lose or draw Pauk now has a serious problem

1 Sqn is on Night AF attack to disrupt defending fighters, 1 is laying mines on the port the remaining 14 Sqns are ordered to plaster the refinery....

After a few weeks of going deep Pauk must redeploy his fighter assets.

in 3 weeks Wake based 29's will hit the HI - all those fighters Pauk has must be redeployed.

In the near future Palembang will also be hit but I think B24's can do that at least initially !!!!

Well today was the beginning of the fightback !!!

I had planned a co ordinated offensive

1. RAF from Akyab were going to plaster Rangoon and begin disrupting Pauks units resting there and cause atrtritional pilot losses.

2. USAAF strategic command Superforts from VP were going to plaster Balikapan's oil fields

3. USAAF P38's and B25J's (Bankha) and B24J's (Medan) were going in after the AF at Palembang to clear the way for future airstrikes.

OK well what actually happened

1. Akyab was closed in all day by the Monsoon and the attack on Rangoon was postponed 24 hours (meteorologists assre me they will go in tomorrow)

2. Superforts finally did their job in a daring daylight raid 180+ out of 242 possibles found the target and crucified it. Balikapan Oil production is down 50% and the port was mined.

3. Medan was closed in however Admiral Mountbatten ordered the fighter in anyway - a single B25J Group escorted by 200 P38's went in and despite heavy losses kicked the crap out of the defending fighters.

I think this can be called the first allied victory in a long while

The plan for tomorrow 1 Superfort BG has immediately been ordered to report to Wake to get ready for operations against the HI in a few days. The other 4 BG's (minus the 3 planes lost over Balikapan) are going in after Palembang Oilfields again 1 Sqn will be carrying mines.

Rangoon will be hit as well I want to break the SRA defences now before the Frank becomes operational in a months time.

The IJNAF came out to play today P38G's on close escorty and P38J's on high sweep combined to klill a few but I need to rest the fighters tomorrow.

Superfortsd went in but the earlier Sweep was not enough to clear the air I lost 20+ B29's they will rest tomorrow and go after easier meat the next day.

RAF again failed to hit Rangoon bad weather.

Medan and the bulk of the B24's were clouded in again.

OK resting the tactical bombers today tried to send the Strat boys after Miri but th eweather closed me down again.

VP is closed about 50% of the time now.

Fatigue is leaving my P38 Groups and repairs are underway. Palembang will feel my wrath shortly.

I think next time I go in I will sned everything at the AF 1st and then knock out the Oil at my leisure.

In the East the lst for the forces will be in position in three days PH now has 999,999 fuel and supplies with other PI Islands at about 300,000 of each.

I have 100 LST's and about 200 AK's and 30 AP's assembled the armada will begin loading in 5 days to allow for minor reorganisations.

Lessons I have learned from other games.

1. Dont try to interdict target in advance of landing all it does is gove notice of the target.
2. Invasion fleet should be able to do a minimum if 1/1 movement at flank.
3. You cannot take a target without losing some ships.
4. MSW's MSW's and yet more MSW's.

Strategically my goal is as follows.

1. Keep pressure on resources in the West and try to win at Mandalay - Mandalay is now the key to Singapore. If I break through in the north Pauk will have to retreat which should allow my forces to link up.

5th Indian Divand 7th Armoured bde are en route these fresh rested formations are going to try and pry that door open.

If I can reuninte 14th Army at VP with 12th Army from the north they can jointly unlock 6th Army in the bandou pocket.

The key is to unlock Mandalay.

2. Strategic bombing campaign against Oil and Resource sites accross the SRA.

3. Nuisance raids against HI from Wake

4. Marianas Invasion - if I take the Marianas then Pauk has to garrison Formosa, Chinese Coast, Eastern PI, Bonins etc in strength sucking forces out of Burma.

5. SWPAC ???

What to do with SWPAC is an issue...

I have about 3 Deployable Divs still in SWPAC area I figure Pauk will be stripping forces out of the area I could try an attack at say Rabaul aiming towards Truk to try and open up more options (although shipping may be an issue)

Or I could just shippem to Pearl and use everything in one mass all out push after I take the Marianas.

Don't know still thinking about it !!!
