Pauk raids Palembang he sent in 2 DD's and they caused mayhem ion the port fortunalty the tankers were fully loaded so at least I denied im the oil !!!

My raid against Alor Star looked like a total failure when Pauk sent me the combat summary I was very very dissapointed.

When I got home watched the replay and checked my intel I had destroyed 22 Zeroes on the ground and another 6 in the air......

YEEE HAAAA !!!!!!

Now that is a decent result for the allies. Even Japanese production will take a while to replace that many zeroes.

Add to that the number that must be damaged and It forces me to break the cardinal rule !!!!

NEVER GO BACK

I am sending everything I have at im again at Alor Star including 5th BG from Rangoon (all 10 of em) and the 39th BG (20 Forts)

In advance my lil surface force at Mersing is going in tonight IF I can damage the AF tonight and damage some more zeroes I could get lucky tomorow

Here is hoping.....

THis operation has been christened Operation Shrubbery !!!! (because I just watched Holy Grail again and am in a very silly mood !!!)

Hang on a minute I could have just screwed up badly.

He only had 25 zeroes on CAP if he had set 50% CAP that would imply I had destroyed virtually all the zeroes on the ground thats impossible he must have had a lot of zeroes there for me to have destroyed 22 on the ground.

Something isnt right the sneaky little Croatian is upta summit......

Could he have thrown away 22 zeroes just to bait a trap for my Heavies.

My escorts will be tired as will the bombers if he is sitting waitong on me with hundreds of Zeroes this is going to get painfull....

Na he wouldnt throw away Zeroes on bait ?

Would he......

OK now I know im getting paranoid !!!!

I hate sending a turn and waiting 12 hours for the response the suspense is killing

Hmmm mixed results (although I have not seen the ground losses yet)

Java Group Bombards Alor Star and then my heavies go in. (Not many fly).

It seemed like a decent enough result although the Tomahawk losses were painfull.

The first Japanese assault on Manila was repulsed you have got to love the urban bonus for defenders free forts that cannot be reduced ;)

I will evaluate my options when I see the state of my bomber gps

OK one other point Pauk and I have been discussing my use of long range patrol craft on the san fran to pearl and other routes.

My reasoning is below I have some sympathy with his view that 40+ Vals on a single MSW is a tad overkill !!! (I have trimmed the email conversation down a lot)

My Point

I use single AK's and MSW's, PC's, PG's, even occasionally DD's on solo picket patrols to give advanced warning of KB raiding my commerce. To me its just common sense (In other games I have had several 100 ship convoys gutted so I am very very carefull on the SF - PH route now) I also use small SC gps in this way with an AK as a fuel source I move them between Pearl and SF outside of the normal commerce straight line route (and yes if im not paying 100% attention they often stop as I have them on Patrol/ Do not retire and I divert them out of the way)

I am interested as to why this is an issue for you ? It seems a pretty sensible precaution for any Admirality to take before committing high value ships to a critical shipping route. (I just tend to do it at all t imes as I have to many troop convoys assigned to this route to feel safe

I rotate the ships assigned to the mid ocean pick et patrols all the time. (p.s. I normally do the same thing near Columbo and other high value ports Air recon is not enough !!!!

Yup two of my opponents just hit Sydney I am forced to commit huge resources to port and convoy protection now (this is actuallly more historic that the 60 or 70 unescorted convoy !!!)

I always keep one or 2 CV's at Pearl or SF for the same reason commerce protection is a huge issue for me if I cannot keep that route open and secure it is impossible for the allies to do anything and if I have BB's to go to the West Coast I am going to secure the routes 1st in as much as I can.

Now if this is an issue we can discuss it but I dont view this as gamey its just common sense to me.

His points which I do agree with but still think you need the flexibility as I would be ciminally negligent when I dont have air superiority and KB is around not to send patrols to find them !!!!

Well, there is nothing wrong with principal - but sadly there is two more things which affect this principal:

1. As you may know, Japan had coast naval guard on the perimeter around Japan (fishing boats). I do not know about allies. However, this is not represented in the game.

2. Game mechanics - It is not your fault that ALL (or majority) planes from KB will concentrate on the poor MSW or PG of whatever. Please keep in mind that planes spending points (forgot how they are called - ordonance?) so just imagine situation like this - You invading Marshalls but you find 20 msw, 20 PC/PGs, 20 small AP/AKs all dispersed and separated in "one ship TF". hm, of course it is extreme example, but where to draw line?

We have agreed that both sides will do it and that I will not whinge when the shoe is on the other foot later on.

I am happy with this

Am I being unreasonable ?

100k supplies 82% to level 6 at Johore the fight at Johore will start in a couple of days

Malacca forced the retreat of two more of my Bdes which is annoying a lot of my units require time to rest up.

OK in addition I am now evaccing the heavy bombers and some of my fighters (mostly buffs and hurricanes)

I will rest them up and bring them in when recovered.

A Massive decicive air attack on Singapore followed up by a hit on Singapore harbour

I am above 100k supplies unfortunately it wont matter.

I Have been retreated a little to much.

FMSV and SSVF are wrecked, 5 of my Indian Bds are between 30 - 50 AV as well. The speed of advance and poor timing of my retreats has killed any chance of a long defence.

I have 1st Malaya, 2nd Malaya, 22nd Aus, 27th Aus, and 1 Indian Bde at full Strength plus perhaps 1 Bde equivalent from troops shipped in.

5 Indian Bdes are at about 50% having been retreated at least once and both of my CW Bdes are wrecked.

6 Bdes is only about 600 AV behind level 6 forts they wont be able to hold long. He will bounce me back to Singapore.

If I can hold Johore for a month the 5 Indian Bdes can maybe recover enough to allow me to hold until end feb but I doubt it.

My only ace in the hole on this one is that every unit in my army is prepping for Johore and has been since day 1.

I am figuring he will be prepping for Singapore.

If I get bounced out of Johore its all over his prep and strength will make short work of Singapore.

Johore is the key it MUST hold for some time.

gAFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/28/41

OK I am now at 125,000 supplies in Singapore and Johore
Forts are at 5 92% and 6 40% at Johore/ Singers

But I have had to withdraw all my airpower he has me beat. I also suspect that the land power I have is not enough I was retreated a litte to much.

Both 55th Div and Imp Guards are in the line against me as well as 18th Div and a mixed Bgde thats a lot of heavy metal.

The AVG is wrecked and there is not much I can do about it between the three sqns I have about 40 good pilots left.

I will disband fragments of other units into the AVG to bring them back up a little in strength. Average XP will be about 68 when I am done.

The last few transports in harbour at palembang and Singapore will be destroyed.

I have withdrawn the Java Gp to the south as it will be a sitting duck in Sing Harbour.

No moves yet apparent towards kendari or Amboina. I think the SBD's have scared him off.

It doesnt really get me much but I am determined to keep my fleet in being as the threat of Force Z is what is keeping him back.

Moulmien is a real pain as he has me trapped in a pocket I am having to air transport my men out as they will retreat back to Moulmien if defeated.

I made a major mistake in not watching my rear in Burma.

Andy

More hits on fleeing transports and AP's including the sole AK ferrying my troops out of the pocket at Moulmien

Singapore hit hard but Johore is left alone which is good

Managed to kick him out of Hengchow with a shock attack to clear my lines again (a nice lil xp gain for those Chinese units !!!!!)

Johore should be level 6 forts by now

My last USAFFE Division (2nd PI) arrived today so I can finally retreat my entire force to the Manila perimeter there is little point in allowing myself to be cut off now so all forces will concentrate on Manila.

(In one of these games I will need to try to reinforce the PI just to do the unexpected !!!!!!)

Quiet few days as the last of my troops get into Johore.

Forts hit 6 but I suspect I am to short of troops to hold for long.

I am also collapsing my PI defences onto Manila.

Lexington starts her new duties as an aircraft transport and the first of my Marauder Gps start to near the front.

(I am also downgrading B17 Sqns to Marauders/Bolo's in India to free up Forts to fly sqns to Pearl.)

I made a mistake last turn that Pauk has been very gracious over.

I included a PT Sqn in the Java Gp to move from Palembang to Soerbijou. He launched an attack with Nells and a PT Boat ate a torpedo. Rightly Pauk was less than happy with this as we had agreed no PT Boats in Sqns larger than DD's except on tranfer. Now it was on transfer but it was perhaps to near the front ...my mistake...I have apologised and we move on.

My attempt to reinforce Singapore has cost me a lot of transports for I suspect little effect.

OK a few major plus points for January that will help dictate strategy.

Zero Bonus declines by 1 point (every little helps)

B25C and A20's enter productionit is my intent to downgrade some of my heavy groups.

19th BG (LB24's)
39th BG (B17's)
5th BG and 7th BG are all in India at present recuperating with very low numbers of 4E bombers.

39th will re equip with A20's and 19th BG with B25's.

42nd BG with Marauders is in Java at present and will go either north or south (decision yet to be made)

That will give me a minimum of 4 or 5 Heavy/ Medium USAAF Gps in India.

41st BG (Bolo's) are at Canton moving to Australia they will re equip with B25's ASAP

That leaves 3 Bomber Gps

11th, 17th and 47th covering West Coast and Pearl

I am intending to equip one with B17's (17th BG) one with LB24's (11th BG Pearl) and one with A20's/ B25C's (47th BG)

Over the next 12 months I recieve 6 additional Bomber Gps 22nd, 38th, 43rd, 90th, 307th and 341st

So by December 42 I will have a total of 13 USAAF Bomber Groups my aim is 5 in India, 3 SWPAC, 3 CENTPAC with the other 2 as floating reserve wherever I decide to strike !!!!!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/02/42

Raid on Amboina clears out a good chunk of my PT Boats

It is now decision time I have 3 surface TF's in range of Amboina I can send them in but have they done there job the mere existance of these TF's has delayed the IJN for at least a week. If I risk my surface forces I am sending my striking power into harms way.

Fleet in Being v Using my FLeet

its a difficult choice Pauk isnt overextending beyond Betty or Nell range.

Cheers but if you want a great AAR check out PZB's and Wobblies books against each other !!!!

I tend to talk to much about my fears (which I blame PZB for......up until that AAR my normal 1st move was to strip India to reinforce Burma !!!!)

Now its all I can do to put up any kind of fight in Burma !!!!

OK I have now reviewed my options and I have made a few decisions.

I will hold at Johore as long as possible at least until the forts start to go down.

I would like to make Pauk either change his preparation or commit BB's.

I will flood the Malacca straight and around Singapore with Dutch and RN subs.

Cat and mouse is still the order of the day around Amboina.

Major TF's 120 miles away but I am holding my light and heavy TF back from the front both are moving NW this turn with my light TF moving to fuel at Kendari.

If he gives me an opportunity I will go for him but I am watching the weather very carefully hoping for a chance.

As long as POW stays alive and afloat she is the most powerfull ship in the area and while backed by Revenge and Repulse actually thats a powerfull experienced fleet.

Revenge and Repulse are both under armoured and have minimal air defence BUT they both have great XP and a decent 15" gun I would happily match them 3 for 3 versus any combination of IJN BB's.

(Although I would want some way to neutralise the IJN CA's as they are almost more dangerous than BB's)

OK a little quiet this turn

My light TF fueled at Kendari and Betties tried to hit it the Dutch Fighters did well and protected the fleet.

Im sending in POW and Revenge to top off their tanks tonight lets hope they get as lucky .... I have reinforced the aircover over Kendari with 4 Wirraways and another 12 Dutch Buffalos.

Apart from that a raid on Akyab put a torp into a fiji class cruiser while the decrepit D class cruser was unharmed

I am withdrawing them to Colombo

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/05/42

Pauk hits Amboina again and bombards with a CL sqn I spot the heavies on there way in so it wont be long until he tries a deliberate attack.

I know that my Martins wont hurt BB's so they are ordered to ground attack but I dont hold out much hope !!!!

In China I lose my 1st city supply is just to low and 3 corps cannot hold agains the onslaught its annoying but not unexpected.

What is annoying is that 3 other corps were on there way but are to slow.

Ahh well

ORIGINAL: Andy Mac

Remember that recent tests showed that Intel reports on air losses are overstated.
Nobody ever said if it's a bug or a feature, but apparently this bug/feature is more severe with regard to destroyed planes on the ground.
In one PBEM my opponent is reporting the correct number of destroyed planes (he is Japan), in the intel those losses are between 30 to 70% bigger than the one he can check counting the planes before and after (replacements off)

It would be nice if Matrix told us something about it.

Good luck

OK a list of fragments rescued and there destination so far.

Malaya HQ (Madras - Cadre only will form my West Command HQ after the fall of Malaya - III Corps will move to Dacca under East Command at that point)
FMSV Bde (Madras about 300 men all heavily disrupted this Bde was fought out in Malaya so I am evaccing as much of it as I can)
102 RN BF (Madras 500 Men will move to Trivandram under West Command)
108 RN BF (Yanam 400 Men will dig in at Yanam)
43 PS RCT (About 10 Squads still a fragment evacced after being retreated from Naga will move to North Command on anti Paratrooper duty at Lucknow or Delhi)

11 DAF - Madras
12 DAF - Yanam
16 DAF - Trivandram

All full units under West Command when they arrive on fort building duty.

Others

PAF Aviation about 400 men at Darwin
Barisan Regt 50% at Koepang/ 50% Derby
9th DAF Wyndam
109 USAAF/ 112 USAAF/ 118 USAAF (all fragments) at New Caledonia

Given that I dont think that Malaya will last overly long I am moving heavan and earth to reinforce Java ..... I NEED to delay him otherwise India (and possibly Australia) are very vulnerable.

I dont think malaya is going to get it done so I am workong and a mini fortress Soerbijou now to try and win time

The jungle bases at the Burma/India border will hold off all sorts of attacks - don't worry about losing the inland bases. If your opponent tried to get to India via the land route you can "laugh your way to the bank"...

BTW - go back and review PzB vs Wobby and me in regards to using Java as a "distraction" to keep your opponent from taking India... then start moving forces to India "RUSH".

Good luck -
