Hmm, I know I sound like a broken record and the only reason I'm speaking up is that if the Tinian invasion fails I could see this game simply ending as the Allies won't be able to rescue their troops and "try again". But why try to close Guam 50% and Saipan 40%? Those %es will guarantee that both airfields will be able to fly CAP tomorrow and Land-based CAP has been what has slaughtered your bombers before.

Would it not be more efficient to fully close Guam today and then sweep Saipan tomorrow with your carrier air before sending in the carrier-based bombers and B-29s... Your decision obviously but 50% closure of an airfield doesn't prevent CAP and so gives Pauk the choice of setting up an all-out CAP effort over one or other of the bases and greatly damaging your forces in a day's time. I know if I was the Japanese player and saw you splitting your effort I'd pick one base, send every fighter I had in and figure that every fighter I had would have a good chance of standing and winning when you split your force again between two targets the next day. If on the other hand I saw 2 airbases closed down on 2 consecutive days and knew that on the 3rd day the 3rd one would be closed I would be VERY reluctant to send fighters in against your massed strikes as Japan just doesn't win "all or nothing" battles in 1944 if the Allied player keeps pouring it on.

The issue is this Nemo my BB's are one shot weapons if I use them to close the AF to early then his masses of engineers will repair them and I will face the situation you are describing without a key weapon these are level 7 AF's therefore I need 85% or > AF Damage to keep them closed to CAP this is almost impossible to do other than by steady attrition - I need to hit each base multiple time to not only build AF damage up but also to kill the engineer squads.

I know he hasnt sent in CAP today and I know that I have 2 BB Sqns in reserve to close an AF if I need to (or 1 plus the Iowa Gp to clear the way).

80% of my carrier bombers are hitting Guam AF tomorrow supported by 2 Sqns on B29's this should hit it hard

20% are hitting Tinian to keep the damage levels high supported by 2 Sqns of 29's and a BB bombardment

6 Sqns on B29's are hitting Saipan AF.

I have to accept that I cannot totally close all three permanemtly its not possible if I concentrate on more than 1 I can get damage up to the 50 - 60% level on them all and then that puts them in range for say a Night B29 raid to close or cripple one and for my BB's to close the other.

What I am saying is yes I can close them for a day or two but with my shredded 29's and BB's so far from Wake I cannot keep them closed therefore I need to play a cagey game and lift the damage levels day after day.

Basically this is a war of attrition and I need to keep on him

I guess the one other point is remember my intel advantage if pauk reinforces with heavy CAP I will know about it - it is a Japanese disadvantage that bit red AF icon but in this case its not totally unreasonable as I have surface sqns in each base with radar so I would know if decided to ship in 300+ fighters to contest the air.

Have you though about a lateral move to take Woleai, Ulithi, or something in B29 range of the Marianas, that might be lightly defended ?

That would help you to unload the burden of suppresing three bases by using more B29/24 and Tac bombers

Unfortuantely I dont have much in the way of combat power and I made no progress in SWPAC so it would mean having the Marianas at my back and only my carriers to keep them quiet - nice idea but not doable I need to concentrate on Marianas alone for now

The biggest mistake I made was my diversion off of Java was so effective that I didnt dare send the slow battlewagons of the eastern fleet towards the Marianas.

If I had another 8 BB's and a lot of CA's in CENTPAC just now this would be a different battle where I would be round the clock bombarding.

I have ordered a Battle Sqn centred on Warspite, Valient, QE and 2 older US BB's to depart Colombo

A second fast Sqn with Repulse, Mass and 10 CA's (mixed RN/USN) departed three days ago but its a long way to go.

In total over 50 warships including 2 CVE's, 1 CVL and 7 BB/BC's in en route but it will take time - and time is a commodity I dont have much of I must assume that after pauk has had two or three days to rest his fighters and repair damaged one he will be back that gives me that 2 or 3 days to rearm with hellcats and close those AF's

OK an update my operations went as planned I got a good bombardment on Tinian and I think all three are now shut.

A problem though my fleet carriers are not moving they keep chugging at 4 hexes despite being ordered to sprint 12 !!!!

Lexington ate two torps today in the gap so thats potentially 90 Hellcats out of my TOE bloody annoying - she should make it but you can never be sure.

Superforts ordered to hit Guam

Carrier Air hitting Saipan but the carriers are moving closer to Wake in order to replenish fighters as my bridge is now shut.

Guys I have made a HUGE mistake I am on the edge of my seat.

Last turn Pauk tried an ambush but Guam and Saipan are still closed...

BUT in a fit of what I can only call madness I ordered my last two BB TF's in to hit Tinian and ordered my fleet to 1 hex from Tinian on Ground Attack with Superforts hitting the base's AF

So far so good

I also ordered a SHock Attack.

BUT in my guts I 'know' that Pauk is sending in KB this turn I just know it dont ask me how or why but 3 seconds after I sent the turn I realised this is the end of my fleet - oh crap what have I done oh crap oh crap...

KB and his surface fleet are incoming and my fleet is going down....

Guys the movement issues with TF's I have been encountering just became critical - Pauk wasnt waiting in ambush so I got awway with my recklessness yesterday.

But having realised that desperation was not yet called for I was starting to pull back because I cannot seem to trust my carriers to move properly to replenish so the only option is to pull back and rearm in total.

I was in the middle of doing this when a BB TF went off in the wrong direction I am 100% certain the orders were to remain under my carriers protection on patrol and there was nothing for them to react to. ( Checked every order for every TF several times as I know things are tough)

Anyway cest la vie three more capital ships lost - I am taking a couple of days break from this game because this was just crazy

Accordingly 3 BB' are sunk.

So far Lexington is crippled and Barnes sunk because of these isses (not to mention lots of AK's when my carriers took an extra three days to get to Wake in the 1st place) now 3 BB's I think its fair to say I am steaming I am going to do a full reinstall and hope this corrects the issues because a dangerous position off the Marianas becomes totally impossible if my TF's dont obey orders (reaction I could live with unhappily this is just crazy)

p.s. my problems started to occur after the scattering of my transport TF's off the Marianas so I am wondering if thats whats caused this as I had over 500+ TF's on the map at that time hence my hope a reinstall will correct the issue

I understand you wanting to take a break. Losing 4 capital ships to a bug like that is something that would make me consider asking for a re-play of that turn.

I am not sure I dont mind askign for replays when its land movement issues and I have certainly offered them before in other games whe its clear its been a bug but on this case I am not sure I dont like naval redos because we have no control over other aspects - i.e. Lexingotn eating a Torpedo (although she shouldnt be there anyway)

On balance I wont ask for one but this finishes the Tinian offensive 40% of my BB's on the bottom despite very carefull preparation - what amiusing is that this is the only TF that hasnt expended its ammo yet ;) All my other BB TF's have already bombarded this one was the reserve TF covering the fleet incase his surfact TF's caught up with my Carriers.

Pauk has offered me a redo as an honourable opponent and I have refused.

Its just to much of a slippery slope on this stuff what happens if my carriers react in a way I dont like - its a BUG

Navy stuff is just too hard to redo fairly so absoulutely no Redo it would be unfair on so many levels.

OK Guys while I insist on no redo this does leave me a tricky problem

My carrier air cannot keep up with losses and I will be relying on it more to get the job done as I am now short a  and with 40% of my BB's with davy jones then my choices are narrowing I dont see how I can avoid putting Marine Corsairs on my Carriers now I really wanted to avoid doing this until this batrtle was over as its unfair to change a HR like this in mid battle but I dont see much choice as this battle will be going on for a long while and I need to start using the Marine pilot pool.

I will need to discuss this with Pauk any thoughts ?

I don't see any problem with making this change to House Rules now....  In the Empires Ablaze mod ( Japan optimised for offensive and defensive capabilities and ONLY to be played with PDU on ) there is no restriction on Corsair use at all as I always believed Corsairs were the only Allied defence against the numbers of front-line fighters Japan can generate in '43 and '44 with PDU on.

So, this House Rule needs changing ( and always has, long before this situation arrived ) and I see no reason not to change it mid-operation.

Don't see any problems using Corsairs in Carriers... not after what happened.

Good luck.

I don't see why Allied players want to have a HR restricting Corsairs on Carriers when the Japanese player gets a huge bump in the numbers they can produce that are non-historical plus the advantage of having the "training" prgram in China. In stock, you already have the low amount of naval pilots and Hellcats to overcome vs. the Japanese being able to out produce the Americans in new generation planes.

Even without these recent results, you already have one hand tied behind your back trying to take an island like Tinian. Your trying to play a game with too many historical restrictions, self imposed, IMO.

It seems to me after such a scenario the US GHQ would have decided to change dramatically its ways, ie many houserules could be renegotiated here...

Yes on this I agree and would recommend other allied PBEM player take note of Marine Corsairs on Carriers when PDU is on should be allowed certainly after 1/44 (I can still see arguments for restricting it before that) and I was a fool to limit it but to be fair how could we know the impact until we got here ?

I am a fool and I know I am a fool not to ground attack train but I just cannot bring myself to set up training 'camps' to do it - I know its not right so I wont do it.

(Dont get me wrong I am not in any way criticising any of my opponents on this point they all see it differently and I suspect most are unhappy about my AF stacking so we all have little foibles in the game that we need to live with)

As I said up front I don't like naval redos - I have a personall dislike of them as there are to many other quirks in the sea model to make it viable.

Land combat thats a different ballgame because land movement is genuinely borked sometimes but naval nah just need to go with the flow.

Lets face it guys I have been outplayed in this game so far and 3 BB's won't make much difference to that.

<puts away the ganja>

Ok this mellow crap is for idiots its time to start planning the comeback !!!

Tinian will not fall quickly I think we all need to accept that now so how can I still win there.

My carriers need to inch carefully back to Wake to replenish and I need to think about where I can muster more force from.

Time to get planning

Just finished a detailed review of my options its not pretty the conclusion I have came to is I need to wait 100 days the battle of Tinian is going to be a long haul.

I need to accept now that Pauk will get some reinforcements and supplies in but I need to be as aggressive as I can to slow them up.

OK over the next 70 days I Get the following list of ships and troops

1. West Coast arrivals 2 CV's, 15 CVE's, 1 CL and 45 DD's.
2. West Coast Yards 1 CV, 2 BB's, 1 CA and 2 2 CL's
3. Eastern Fleet already en route 1 CVL, 2 CVE's, 7 BB's, 12 CA's, 12 CL's. 4 CLAA's, 17 DD's
4. Eastern Fleet new additions - 1 CV, 2 BB's, 18 DD's

Ground Units

I have 6 Divs or equivalents resting at Pearl, 1 En route to Pearl and 2 Divs that arrive in next 70 days plus 1 I can realease from the Aus Militia - So I can muster another 10 Divs but only 4 Armoured Bns in 100 days.

I also recieve 4 fully equipped B29 Gps.

Thats the resources - the plan will need to be worked up but I think it has to be the following.

For the next 100 days my fleet will interdict Tinian in as much as I can. I need to accept its not 100% possible and plan for a concentrated campaign in 100 days which will be slow.

So I will send in supplies now and allow my forces to recover so no more attacks for 100 days.

1 x BG from now on will be round the clock on night AF attack to try and slow fort building, my BB's and CV's acting as one force will  periodically close the AF.

In 100 days my reinforced fleet bolstered by the reinforcing forces will hit Pauk with everything I have left my goal in the meantime interdict what I can and keep that dammed AF shut.

Pre requisites 1. close the dammed training AF's even if it means diverting Superforts, 2. Interdict as much as I can, 3. Dont lose any more capital ships.

If anyone can come up with a better plan I am all ears...

This means at best the fall of Tinian by the end of September 44 say clearance of Marianas by November not pretty but about the best I can hope for given where we are.

In the meantime I will order all my rear area carrier groups to 70% training missions to try and get a crop of reasonably trained pilots for the next round

I know that you don't do the "training camps" for ethic reasons. However, where could you send your rebuilt CV TF (ethically acceptable targets) so the pilots could gain some experience so when you go back hard at the Mariana's they have a better chance of survival??

Agree about closing down his training program. If not, they should be just finishing up in time to counter your big push in 100 days.

true, milk runs on Marcus with the CVs would build up there experience and be a very fair way of doing so, "a la Wake"..

Oh I 100% agree with that I will happily train against Marcus.

I think its going to be a fine balancing act I need to keep as much pressure on Tinian as possible without breaking my fleet until such time as my reinforcements arrive.

AND

I need to not commit reinforcements piecemeal. I need to gather them into one almighty fleet and reinvade in force.

I am tempted to perhaps assign one ANZAC Div to the Marshalls as under cover of LBA they could sieze a few bases and keep attriting Jap air power - Pauk has probably evacced most of it now..

So I hate the thought of 'waiting 100 days' as this is time I cannot afford to lose BUT I need to maintain a credible threat against Tinian and interdict it as much as I can.

Phase 1 is I need to back off and fill up my sqns with fighters just now my fighter groups are sufficiently worn down that I need to back off fast.

Now that you are pausing, you NEED bases in range of Tinian.

Check Woleai, north NG, Marshalls to see if you can grab something cheaply.

A base of 0,0 with 8 Seabees will be a dangerous 3,3 fort 9 in a pair of weeks and you have a zillion of Seabees and EAB

Game back on Pauk has relented !!!

Apparently he had forgotten about the HR restricting 2E to 4E the time has really passed when it would have been of value as I allowed B24D and B17 to drop out of service.

I will increase the proportion of heavies but it does little good now - it would have been usefull in suppressing Chinese bases and Burma instead of all the tacticals ah well cest la vie.

Still on my 100 day plan concentrating trying not to lose anything else until I can take him out.
