I've been playing Russia in in 1796 scenario and find stockpiling food is difficult. Not prohibitively difficult as I am still able to wage war. I just don't have 300+ food built up after a few years of gametime. I have about 70.

Past experience has taught me that upgrading too many farms at once is a good way to cause starvation. He states he has upgraded farms to maximum. I've only upgraded a few. None above level three. I left Kiev alone...LOL

It seems to me also that when something is being upgraded like factories or farming, that output during the upgrading process is reduced.
I don't have any concrete data, but a recent upgrading of Moscow factories (my biggest manufacturer) caused a decline of labor until the upgrade was complete.

Also, he may have unbalanced his economy by putting too much into farming. In previous games I've tried to add too much labor to farming and actually caused a higher level of starvation. ...perhaps steelworkers, lumberjacks, and potterymakers make poor farmers.

...just seems to be the cases in my previous games.

Were there any military units starting to be built or levied during the time the pool of labour became smaller? Construction of divisions will shrink the population and thus the working labourers.

Dah. Didn't know lumber and iron could be piped that high, so far as the figures were not misleading.

I needn't see yours; I have such a waste dump of my own buried in a file. There is no easy way out of this catastrophe except, perhaps, leaving the game behind and replaying it - which I'm doing. Now my court-expansion craze is starting to produce the effect of bringing inflation... I mean waste well under control.

My trouble Sarge is that once I hit the "bad boy" spot I lose interest because it just becomes an interminable string of detailed battles to ensure I don't go under. I hate surrendering but sometimes I do it to shed glory.

I want to whine to the developers that upgrading culture(so you can get military upgrades) gives way too many glory points. I did a test with Austria in 1796.

France surrendered to Britain causing all the Frenchboys to come and kick my butt outta France (I was just doing QB's). Then they came to Vienna and I offered limited surrender which they accepted.

Anyway, even though I surrendered, I was running a very close second just because I was building culture and barracks.

Nowadays, we are less likely to put the job of raising cultural standards first as the waste gauge is our most pressing concern.

I was hoping to make culture give enough glory so that players could try to rack up enough points to win without having to conquer anybody. Do you remember approximately how many glory/turn you were getting from culture?
