Hi there and welcome to this thread. Title says it all. Please add your two bits and be honest about it. Everyone here has lost a spouse, a job or two, plenty of friends, and perhaps even a decade or two of life expectancy over a PC game so there's nothing to be ashamed of. All that is just evidence of a well designed game.

For me I can't say yet cause I only briefly played a practice game for 11 turns and just check out the forum here when I'm having a feed. I'm paranoid of starting a game without knowing the mechanics and messing up. I'm an idiot for sure. Anyways please feel free to comment.

How much time ??? 100's of hours at the very least. Ive had teh game since launch and still dont fully understand many aspects of this superb game ( gound combat anyone ??? ).

it all boils down to how much else you can sacrifice to make time to play it imo , no wife/kids/job and i still sometime s get that one more turn feeling.. TV has been consigned to history and about the only social activity i do is bathing and personal hygene . Although some i know might even disagree on that

BTW welcome tokyoboy, i have seen your posts in the past but not said 'hello' yet ..

hello

bye

I do 2-3 turns a day averaging about an hour per turn....so...about 3 hours a day just playing the game.

"Flushing down the toilet" would indicate that I consider my WitP time wasted, which I don't...

How much time do I flush down the toilet on WitP? None. It is my privilege to be able to occupy myself for an hour or two every day in a most enjoyable PBEM with my oldest and best friend. This is quality time compared with the 3+hours I spend in the car every day so I can spend 9 hours in the office. The only time I enjoy more is the 2-3 hours every evening I spend with my wife fixing and eating dinner while we listen to the radio, and the 6-7 hours I spend sleeping.

I always save a months worth of turns so that if I make a "game mechanics" type of mistake for lack of knowledge I can go back a month of time, if necessary, and try it again. Most of the time its just repeating 2-3 days and the longer you play the number of game mechanic mistakes dwindles.

I'm with Terminus and Irrelevant: I have flushed no time down the toilet with WITP. Research has indicated that using the brain regularly can help stave off Alzheimer's Disease, so considering all the time I have spent on this game (at an average of 1 hour per turn, somewhere between 600 and 1000 hours) I should be mentally competent long after I am dead...

Ever play vs the AI or have months worth of gaming wiped out due to a game killer bug? I should have worked out or something!!

Actually, Ron, I have had that happen (game ending bug) in many computer games over the years. For me, it's not the completion of the game that matters, but whether I enjoy the experience along the way.

Granted, but this game eats up so much time and effort that this becomes an issue, for me anyway. I'd actually like to make it into 43 during a PBEM game because as a hardcore Allied player being on the brunt end of not only the Japanese juggernaut but the WITP version, with all the pro Jap bonuses like the 1st turn Uber move, it would be nice to just once be on the offensive.

The AI is not enjoyable as I like to think there is a shred of a challenge offered up vs the computer. Getting to 43 vs the AI is about exciting as picking ones nose. AI can't even take the DEI, despite never using any forces not historically involved!

Realistcially I spend 3 hours a day on WITP BUT there are a lot of ifs and buts in there:

Real Life stuff can take up an evening or weekend at times = no play on somedays.

You got it, Terminus. The part of my life I consider "flushed down the toilet" is the 50 hours a week I spend at work. A "crappy" passtime performed only for a bribe. Real living is something they don't have to pay you to do.

Funny how that seems to work in our world. Something which someone can only bribe you to do is considered time well spent while that which you would do if you had your choice is considered to be wasting the time which you could be devoting to that which you would rather not be doing.

Well I didn't mean to say WitP time is a pure waste but the title is inferring that maybe there are many important things which we need to do that are put off or just not done cause we are playing war games. Anyways, lets let this thread of misunderstanding sink beneath waves along with the countless minions of forgotten threads.

Bye thread If you're lucky you might land on the Musashi or Prince of Wales.

Hi,

Don't feel bad. I felt the same way too - many years wasted playing Pacwar, UV and now WITP - realtime - easily 2 to 3 years - perhaps could have done many other things - like doing volunteer work, etc. Well I resolve to do other things while playing my PBEM games - learning how to swim (ya - play WITP and yet can't swim!.) Maybe running marathon next year.... Life should be more than WITP. IMHO

You could do worse, like watching that trashy tv. At least the brain is working for most strategy game play.

Yes good idea patrickl to temper the game with other hobbies like sports. I like to do cardio and weights as well as play chess a lot and other stuff. I used to collect comic books til I realized how much room space it takes up.

I'm thinking though how to play WitP without overloading on it. Like at 1 turn = 1 hour including loading game, sending zip and watching combat, you could play 1 hour a day but only get in 1 turn a day which would make the game last up to 5 years real time! I can see the temptation to play multiple turns a day to speed up the game time but the cost in real time is inhibiting. Hmmm... You guys who play multiple games at once must be supermen (or freaks). I'm not playing now but I can understand the fantastic addictive quality of the game. I'm also considering purchasing Battles in Normandy cause it looks like another juicy delight. That Gary dude really knows how to hook warloving people in with his goods.

Yep, trashy TV -avoid them. I hardly watch TVs. The only TV I watch are news, occasional documentaries and Panorama. I kind of like CSI though.

I've never had a tv and probably never will. I used to watch the history channel at my parents home to see cool war documentaries and other stuff. I liked Ancient Warrior and Big Battles that Changed the World.

Yep you said the word : temper the game with other things. Live life with multiple goals - including WITP.

Kind regards,

Nice arrangement. I am I ever glad I'm not married. I think PC games are wives worst enemy... well after alcohol, collar lipstick, screaming babies, smelly laundry, rowdy friends, and the hassle of finding a good divorce lawyer have all been factored out. Ahhhhh so nice to be single. Actually I shouldn't say this cause it seems almost everyone using this forum is married.

Heh, once saw a US caricature from the early 70's, showing a Danish airliner coming in to land at an American airport. It had pit hair under the wings!
