I was wondering where is the border between Hami (China) and Urumchi (Soviets). I don't want to activate Russians.

This is using my map. The actual border for activation purposes is hard coded in the game executable, and runs along the Soviet border on the official map (as far as I am aware). The Soviet border on my map does not exactly match the one on the official map, but it is close enough that for most purposes it doesn't matter - just don't go too near the Soviets and you should be OK. I DID, however, deliberately make my Soviet border match the official one in the most critical parts of the border near Vladivostok, at the cost of some accuracy.

The biggest exception is Urumchi. For much of WW2 this part of China was effectively under the control of various warlords and Soviet interests, and some Soviet military were also present. This is reflected in my scenarios by making Urumchi (not present on the official map) under Soviet control, even though it is a long way from the border, in China itself. An attack by the Japanese on this part of China would likely have led, in my opinion, to Soviet intervention. Soviet activation in the game, however, is ONLY caused by crossing the Soviet "border", and Urumchi is not in the Soviet area. Even if the Japanese march up to the base, occupy it and wipe out the Soviet unit there the Soviets will NOT be activated (I have tested this). Therefore I have a house rule, included in the map documentation, that if the Japanese attack Urumchi, they sould also activate the Soviets by crossing the border elsewhere.

As a matter of interest - after 1943 the KMT more or less reasserted their control over this part of China, so from 1944 onwards the Urumchi base should really revert to Chinese control, but that isn't possible in game. I decided to represent it in its 1942-1943 status, as this is probably the most likely time that the base would be threatened by the Japanese - what happens pater in the game is of much less relevance.

I might add this to the map FAQ...

Andrew

Thank you, Andrew. I didn't play official map for quite a long time, so it didn't occur to me that this is a CHS question.
