I am in my first game as the allies in scen 15(AI) and was wondering what is considered a good defense as far as dates go to hold onto important positions in PI and DEI

Singapore?
Manilla?
Timor?

And any other important place in those areas.

Singapore: anything after Dec 31 1941 is good
Manila: depending if you plan your last stand there or in Bataan/Clark, can be June 42
Timor: against AI in vanilla game...varies, but usually it falls fast after Java etc.

VS AI you can hold all three of them indefinetly. How?

Reinforce Singapore, send in all units you can find from India. Use the AVG and american 4e bombers from there to crush any japanese attempts to get close. In PI retreat all forces into Manila and build up forts. Send in lone AK's to bring supplies. AI doesn't enforce an effective blockade, and as long as singapore and manila are yours it doesn't move vs. timor.

You mean how long can they hold? It sort of depends on Japan too, how much they intend to commit, but for me at least :

For Manilla, if you (litterally) fighting-withdraw back to Manilla, it can probably hold until mid/late February or maybe early March.

For Sing, if you fighting-withdraw to Sing, and then Alamo Sing, you can hold until about mid-February.

Timor - Do you actually mean Java (with Soerbja and Batavai, where most folks make a stand)? Again, depends on Japan, but the end of SRA (Java) tends to collapse in early March. Regarding Timor, some IJN will take Timor early on, to cut the link to Oz (or even assault it Oz).

Oh wait. You meant the AI. Honestly, I haven't played the AI in while. I was speaking as PBEM.

What about Rangoon? I've allowed the Japs to hold me up in there. They do daily attacks but we are pretty even strenghtwise. But the problem is my supplies are running low and any ships i try to send in to resupply get bombed to the ocean floor by that airbase a few hexes southeast. But as I've been rather slow in reinforcing burma from india, I have no other land forces close by to do anything. So Rangoon will hold as long as I have supplies...which may not be much longer.

Rangoon sucks, it's a death-trap. But since you're there...

For supplies, you can at least put your bombers, and even the patrols on Supply transport into Rangoon. I think Akyab puts most of them in range of Rangoon (of course, that means hauling supplies to Akyab). Also, don't forget about fast-tran into Rangoon well enough from Chadpur. DD/CA/CLs can haul quite a bit in. You'll need to fly LRCAP over the TF, but the in-and-out range should keep you far enough from Japanese LBA that your LRCAP will actually keep them away from your ships.

And bomb his troops with "ground attack". It causes disruption to the enemy troops, and will spoil their attacks somewhat (but don't get all giddy about it).

FWIW, the AI will impale itself. If you can get it "stuck" at Rangoon, you can attrit it to death. I also have never seen it do any sort of the amphib op again India (the only real way to gain a foot-hold in India/Ceylon).

What have you got in Rangoon? I think there are like 6 brigades in Burma (or is it 8?). How many are (trapped) in Rangoon?

I took Singapore on 01-07-1942 in a PBEM vs a good player. Multiple landings and cutting off retreat paths is the key.

I should have the PI cleared out by Mid Feb. My oppanant was unable to concentrate his troops in any area so only 1/2 made it to Bataan. Again, pinning units and cutting retreat paths is the key.

I tried "Fortress Rangoon" against the AI and lost a ton of troops there. Fortunatly the AI did not press it's advantage.

I would station a few units outside Rangoon to take advantage of the river there. Might even be able to repulse a river crossing or two before having to go Alamo.

In the PI, Manilla is the place to hold since you get the 4x defense bonus for the urban area. many people like Clark because of the resourse/supply but you cease getting the supplies once the hex is contested and it is clear terrain (no bonus).

If you use the AVG and your opponent is mostly consumed with Sing, you may be able to sneak the units out by sea. That's what I would do. YOu can either Fast Transport them with BB, CA and DD or use the Kazillion AKs in India. I used four floating AK TFs to extract units. Each unit was spread across about 10-12 AKs so that if a few got bombed or torpedoed not too many troops were lost. But your opponent can't have overwhelming air power in the region or it will be a death trap.

Using the RN BBs in a fast transport TF...?

Isn't that an oxy-moron?

-F-

(* Truthfully, I didn't even know you could a put a BB in fast tran TF. Certainly putting an R-class BB into the TF would re-catagorize it as a "Not so fast, but just be glad you're getting out TF." *)

Well I'm at work so from memory I think I have an AA unit, 3-5 engineer units and 4 infantry units, two of the infantry are indian units and one burmese unit and the 4th infantry is a 1/8 strength unit i tried shipping in that got caught in a storm of bombs...

I think the jap troops number around 16k to 18k, and my forces are just under 13k...

my supplies are staying barely over the needs requirement...but that is only because i have a bomber group running supplies in. i'm going to try and send in 15 - 1 AK convoys to run the gauntlet so maybe they don't all get bombed. but that will be about a week until that happens... and my fortifications just dropped to 1 or 0...

I did move a p-40 airgroup in to do CAP, but with only 21 flyable planes and 28 under repairs.. i will move them out... my troops are getting hammered by airpower...

Singapore is also under assault by over 100,000 japs... i've got about 55,000 there, but they are very fatigued from the constant battles since the pennisula got invaded.

its Jan 11, 42. but I feel that once I lose singapore, the rest of the DEI is going to fall rather quickly...

NOTE: this is my very first scen 15 game.. I am playing like I have a chance to hold...no run and cover for me. fight them hard, and pull out when its almost to late.

Plus my history is a bit vague on how everything went down from dec 8 41 to may 1 42

As far as the phillipines go, the japs haven't attacked clark field yet, 24k of their troops are down in naga(? the base two hexes southeast of manilla) locked in battle with 18k and 2 tanks groups. I've been sifting forces from Clark to Naga slowly...I don't want to leave clarke undefended, but If I can muster enough forces to push the southern japanese force back into the sea, i'll be doing alright...the only issue is supplies and airpower... both are dwindling to non existant. I don't believe I can get more supplies to manilla as i believe i have 3 jap CV TF's roaming from Singapore, to the southern PI.

What would you do in that situation?

As far as history - everything did go down(hill) from dec 8 41 to may 1 42 (for the Allies). Right after that is about when things started getting better (Japanese repulses at Gili Gili/Milne Bay and Coral Sea).
