I dont have access to the combat replays at work but the highlight is that my attack failed and that PZB was able to pull in more troops by air.

It cost him in trransports but he is steadily reinforcing.

Noomfoor has lvl 8 forts which was a shock 0:1 and no fort reduction.

Indications are that Sansoper is also being heavily reinforced (Unit count is now up to 8 from 3)

The 35,000 men of the aqssault force have just finished loading but I am torn about what to do.

I want to keep up the pressure but can only really afford to get bogged down in one of the assaults.

My options are.

1. Stick to the plan his Sansoper then Wasile/Namlea
2. Amend the plan bypass Sansoper and go deep straight at Wasile then pick off Sansoper at a later date.
3. Reinforce Noomfoor 1st then methodically move on.

All three are viable and the beauty of my preparation is that I can do all three.

Going to think about this a little

This plan was always a diversion to attrit his forces and force him to commit to the malaria infested bases in the area and it is working he is steadily reinforcing.

My initial thoughts are its time to recut the plan and be bolder but strengthen my punches......

OK the new plan

1. Sansoper is temporarily scrapped and troops will unload at Rabaul troops will remain prepping for this objective.

2. Wasile will be invaded next instead 1st Aus Corps with 3rd NZ Div/ 3rd USMC Div,  1st, 7th and 30th Australian Bdes plus armour will jump ahead covered by all of my fleet carrier assets. i.e. I go in fully protected.

3. 6th Armies 1st Amphib Corps op against Woleia is CANCELLED 6th Army is immediatly transferred to join 8th Army for Thunderchild minus 93rd US Div.

4. 9th Aus Div, 93rd US Div and 364th RCT are tasked as reinforcement for 14th Corps on  noemfoor and will begin prepping immediately.

5. After the Wasile landing shipping will be diverted to allow ABDA Corps to land on Namlea and Kai Island.

6. US 11th Corps on Sarmi replaces US 14th Corps transferring to 6th Army after 1 months refit in Australia.

This leaves the following in 1st Aus Army for a more constrained Hydra offensive

ABDA Corps 3 Divs - Namlea/Kai Island
14th US Corps 3 Divs - Noemfoor being reinforced by 2 further Divs from theatre reserve
1st Aus Corps
- Wasile 3 Divs
- Sansoper 3 Divs
(This Corps is over tasked so I may cancel Menado op and use US 1st Corps instead)
1st US Corps 3 Divs - Menado

It lends more weight to the punches without compromising the operational momentum.

Any thoughts ?

OK the only other thought I have is a total switch of emphasis either before or after the Wasile operation.

1st Aus Army (ABDA Corps/ 1st Aus Corps) attacks Bali/Java area
6th US Army (1st/11th and 14th US Corps) completes Hydra securing Noemfoor/Wasile and Sansoper
8th US Army (1st (from 6th Army)/3rd and 5th Amphib Corps and 3rd/9th US Corps) takes the Marianas.

I could really use at lease 1 more Aus Corps HQ.

I now have to think in terms of Corps and Armies as my forces are so large and unweildy. In the early war its all about bdes and divs now its all about Corps and Armies

on the other hands Japan is comfortable to send divisions here and there easily and forts are high
just another step in this logictics puzzle

it is a real problem I face Sneer.

He has good forts all over the place and has reaction forces at central hubs making even Corps level assaults on secondary bases difficult.

Lets not forget I am now bypassing concentrations.

Unless I am willing to use a full multi corps army in every landing I run the risk of getting held up.

If I do use those scale of forces then I can only launch one invasion every three months.

Its one of the reasons I am using a sledgehammer on the Marianas

If I start to see Indian Divisions in the line then I may reconsider that op but I dont think he is short of ground forces

Hi Andy,

I too am feeling a similar thing in my game against Faber (at least I have just started to sense this).

The Japanese have LOADS of divisions to dispense with. Coupled with level 9 forts = formidable obstacles.

Yup and lets not forget I am missing Malaya/ 12th and 14th Armies and forces at least equivalent to those I am currently deploying in order to put pressure on the Japanese from the North.

Without the threat of an Invasion on Burma/Malaya or Sumatra he can send more ground units south

I think Option 3.  He's reinforcing, so Noomfoor will be a tough nut to crack, but you have him sending his troops in.  With a sustained air campaign and shelling from the BBs, you should be able to make it a death trap -- bag transports and troops.  Once Hydra I and II are consolidated, you should have some troops ready for additional operations.  But the last thing you need is to lose 35K troops in Noomfoor because you overcommitted to an over-ambitious series of attacks.  In addition, if the Noomfoor attack fails, Hydra V+ will be in jeopardy of failing, too.

None of the options above is really suitable IMO.

The closest suitable option is, IMO, number 2. Go for Wasile and then leave Sansoper. You don't need it in order to secure your supply lines so long as you bomb it enough to render it impossible to operate bombers from it.

One thing though, rather than Wasile would you not go for Morotai? It has better base facilities and is the logical base to use for further operations against Mindanao.

Yup 2 is better and is the one I am going for

Had I been seriious about attacking Mindanao then yes it is a better option but remember I dont have the ground forces so this is a Diversion !!!! Morotoi is built to max and has a lot of troops on it and its a major air hub its going to be more straightforward to land next door.

2 is the way ahead I am reordering my forces accordingly

If it's option 2, then you'd best find where he's ferrying in troops from and shut those airfields down/shoot down his transports.  That's his Rapid Deployment Force and until its wings are clipped, he'll be able to fly reinforcements into any place you land.  Of course, if this offensive leaves his air transport crippled, then that will make things easier down the stretch.  I just hope you haven't suffered any serious setbacks by then.

Well i can shoot down 20+ transports a day but they keep on coming from the Palaus.

When Sarmi gets to lvl 5 then the fun will begin P38J's escorting B24J's will make the Palaus an interesting place to base forces.

My plan is to go in with more weight and reinforce my assaulting Corps and cancel a few of the out reach objectives.

I already class Hydra as a success the offensive started on 6th February 44 at Aitape and Dagua then I hit Sarmi all of which were taken we are now at 15th March 44 and I have secured Sarmi and won a major naval battle on the way.

Noemfoor is sucking in Japanese troops which suits me fine as I am about to bypass and go deeper.

If I successfully land at Wasile and then reinforce Noemfoor to the extent that I take the base I will be happy.

(I am also noticing that the Admiralties/Emirau are looking weak now as PZB has air evacced some forces so I may take them to give me a more secure LOC in the area).

Basically If I take Wasile, Noemfoor and perhaps Namlea I will call an end to the operation transfer most amphib assets to Centpac and use the remainder for operations to broaden my LOC

Andy
I am still aiming for 1st June 44 for Thunderchild

I hit lots of his cutoff bases I will soften them all up for a short time to keep these marauding betties at bay.

I am more and more re considering Medck's advice to consolidate a little

I think I will use some recon assets to try and check what kind of defences he has in other bases in northern and central NG.

The IJN /IJA cannot have covered them all....

My next wave is definitely going to hit Wasile but I have time to land other forces on other less defended bases in the area before I reinforce Noemfoor to much more.

Options include the bases at Admiralties/Emirau and other northern NG bases plus perhaps Amboina or other bases nearby as well as Namlea.

The ABDA Corps have the forces to hit several bases perhaps spreading his reaction force is not a bad thing !!!!

Hmmmm interesting PZB attacks me again in the north in the Aleutians he is determined not to let Komodorski get improved its now lvl 1 so I may put a dauntless sqn there for the next tiome he tries this.

It is becoming more and more apparent that PZB has evacced Emiraus and Admiralty Islands.

Now if he has managed to evac them then I can probably take them cheaply.

As a pair of extra bases securing my LOC they could be usefull aslong as they dont distract to much from the main offensives.

Ill start a Bde preparing for each one just in case the opportunity presents itself

OK doing a little prior planning

In the next 60 days the fleet will consist of

12 USN Fleet Carriers
1 RN Fleet Carrier
9 USN CVL's
27 Combat CVE's
6 Replenishment CVR's
8 Modern BB's
4 Old BB's
10 Modern CA's
6  Old CA's
16 Clevelend or Brooklyn class CL's
7 Other CL's
Numerous DD's

50 LCI
35 LCM
93 LCT
76 LCVP
149 LST
2 LSV
8 LSD

and about 50 AP's of varying capacity

I am going to need to work this out pretty carefully.

But the Fleet Attacking the Marianas will need the bulk of that force as I am planning on landing 2 full Corps on Tinian in the first phase.

1 Marine Div
6 x US Inf Divs
1 x Airborne RCT

I suspect I will leave the bulk of the Barges in SWPAC to keep up the pressure there with Wasp/ Saratoga and Formidable backed by some of the older CA's and CL's (Primarily the Australian and RN ships)

The 4 old BB's will be used in my assault Transports and I will use the 8 modern BB's in 4 fast bombardment TF's to support and guard the landing I am planning on providing quite a lot of detail on my Marianas attack as I need to keep it straight somewhere.

If I plan on using 135 LST's, 6 LSD's, 50 LCI's and the 2 LSV's plus say 35 AP's and 100 AK's thats c 7 Divs plus armour and support assault loaded (AK's for Armour and Support minimally loaded)

More to follow in the weeks and months to come as I finalise my TF organisation

As a Japanese player it is amusing to see the forces listed above have the appendement that they must be carefully apportioned in order to be effective ;).

That isn't, of course, to take away in the slightest from Andy Mac... He's playing an excellent game against a top opponent... I am just a bit more used to juggling 6 BBs between 3 or 4 pressing missions and doing without CVs at all than the juggernaught above so it struck me as funny to see its strength being listed.

With that said, yes, you're going to have to be careful. I would be surprised if ANYTHING in this game turned out to be easy or "cheap". And if it ever is easy and cheap it is only so that it can be made more difficult and more expensive elsewhere. Kudos to you for continuing this game

My TF's are inching forward I am making a big effort to pound Kavieng from Rabaul.

My principal goal is to get ashore at Wasile and start to make PZB nervous about end runs

Kai Island is also possible.

The rough timetable is

1. Land Wasile
2. Loop round north of NG to North Aus
3. Pick up ABDA Corps on transports
4. Take Kai and Namlea (possible Amboina as well as it looks lightly defended) with ABDA Corps
5. Make Kendari and other bases in area untennable
6. Withdraw LCI's LST's etc and most of forces earmarked for Thunderchild to Pearl or Kwaj for a few weeks of refit/R&R

ORIGINAL: Andy Mac

Nasty, nasty.

For the big southern push (that ended with the capture of Noumea) in our PBEM I scraped together almost every warship and transport I could manage + almost 75% of the IJN/IJA airpower.

copied from my AAR on the paradox forums:

Area #6 - The Southern Area

Now this is the area where the fun is going to start. A massive fleet has been assembled and will attack in two waves. Yesterdays and todays recon flights over Efate and Luganville has reported little or no land units there so most of the ground units commited to first wave will probably not even land and will be transferred directly to support the second wave.

btw, the invasion fleet STILL hasn't been detected

1st Wave.

The targets for this invasion force will be Luganville and Efate islands. Luganville, being closer, will be invaded first and then Efate will be taken.

Ground units assigned to this force are -

Luganville:

16th Division
64th Naval Guards
67th Naval Guards
19th Engineering Rgt.
20th Engineering Rgt.
144th IJN Base Force
143th IJN Base Force
145th IJA Base Force

Efate:

35th Brigade
21st Mixed Brigade
Yokosuka 6th SNLF
Yokosuka 8th SNLF
43rd Naval Guards
Sasebo 5th SNLF
145th IJN Base Force
144th IJA Base Force
146th IJA Base Force
9th Base Force
31st Special Base Force
1st Aviation Regiment
34th Road Construction Batallion
15th Construction Batallion

They and their supplies are transported and escorted by -

7 Light cruisers
15 Destroyers
1 Minelayer
4 Gun Boats
2 Patrol Boats
8 Minesweepers
210 Troop Transports
15 Transports

2nd Wave.

This wave will target New Caledonia. It will land either at La Foa or Koumac which are north of Noumea and then will advance to Noumea. This wave will launch after Luganville and Efate are secured

Ground units assigned to this force are -

7th Division
38th Division
2nd Division
5th Division
65th Brigade
8th Heavy Field Arillery Rgt.
44th Naval Guards
2nd Army Corps HQ
143rd IJA Base Force
143rd IJNAF Base Force
144th IJNAF Base Force
145th IJNAF Base Force

They and their supplies are transported and escorted by -

4 Light Cruisers
19 Destroyers
4 Patrol Boats
14 Gunboats
19 Minesweepers
76 Troop Transports
20 Transports.

The smaller number of transport craft assigned reflects the assumption that the taskforces will land with no opposition as the beaches are to be taken by a paradrop from Lunga airfield and Guadalcanal

This will consist of -

1st Para Rgt.
2nd Para Rgt.
2nd Yokosuka SNLF

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

All those vunerable transports and escorts are being covered by the mighty combined fleet. There are three surface combat taskforces, with the purpose of defending the convoys and bombarding the beaches, which consist of

11 Battleships
10 Heavy Cruisers
15 Destroyers

Aircover and support will be provided by three carrier division which consist of

8 Fleet Carriers
3 Light Carriers
3 Escort Carriers
5 Heavy Cruisers
3 Scout Cruisers (float plane carriers)
2 Light Cruisers
14 Destroyers

They carry

300 A6M2 Zero fighters with an additional 15 in reserve
178 D3A Val dive bombers with an additional 13 in reserve
181 B5N Kate torpedo bombers with an addtional 15 in reserve
18 A6M2-N Rufe float fighters
and several dozen float search and recon planes

Also operating together with the invasion group is an ASW group of 6 destroyers and a replenishment taskforce of 2 fleet oilers and 2 destroyers.

edit: oh yeah, 32 submarines are screening the targets.

We also have about 150 Army level bombers and about 100-150 landbased fighters to base into newly captured bases. More can be brought in if nessecary.

And of all of it String the thing that bugs me the most.....

"btw, the invasion fleet STILL hasn't been detected"

Ever since that little fiasco my B17's help out the PBY's on LR Search.

It reduces my 4E bomber strength until I get PB4Y's but I aint ever gonna get caught like that one again !!!!!

Ayup. I think the first notification you got was when my bombardment fleets hit Luganville (or was it Efate?) The transports were only 120 miles away by then.

My recon sucks (I am, however, not blaming the game. I am not making proper use of assets.)

Yup use all those early forts for bombing then dont complain if the IJN sneaks up on you.

Another quiet turn Wasile looks like its been reinforced I may be striking to deep but I need to go for it I need to force him to disperse his combat power or else I will have no chance

OK time to fall on my sword !!!

I screwed the pooch tried to send in a low risk invasion of Kai (figured it would be low priority)

And set the PT Boats on escort to retire so they didnt hang about and the Aoba BG did the rest.

OK I am picking up over 500 fighters at Morotoi and over 400 Aux thate some pretty hefty overstacking.

Welll I am going to try and make him pay for it.

I am concentrating P38J's at Sarmi and B24J's at Aitape and Sarmi very low key.

As soon as they are recovered and ready I will send in the heavies to teach him a lesson about overstacking (I hope!!!!)

I am delaying the armada approaching that area to a crawl to give my AF time to get the job done

I am curious how such long "training programme" affects your bases in China? How many supply do you have? What is status of your units there? Mostly disrupted or in quite good shape? It's of course low-priority request...
