It seems that PzB might be overreacting to Iwo/ Bonins.

Is it possible to cut off his ability to redeploy those troops by dominating the sea lanes and going around?

You are also being seriously hurt by your Army Air Forces inability to participate in the action...now is the time, PzB's reserves have got to be nearly completely commited, and there's no way he can recover if he's not allowed to "train" in China and if the pressure on his air groups can be maintained.

Above all, you cannot afford to ease off now...you have smashed the preparations, and any slack in pressure will simply allow those preparations to be rebuilt elswhere...you need to find a place where you can build up a huge LBA field and go for the throat with it.

Do not fret about Iwo...in my experience even with level 9 forts and mountains of supplies, cut off armies can be reduced by steady pummeling from the air and sea. While it seems that you will be unable to take the place by storm, he is equally unable to push you off, and this allows you to deploy superior firepower to the seige. Make his army bleed out over a useless island while you move past it...just don't allow an airbase to spring up on your supply lines.

The only solution to the current problem is to burn the Home Islands to cinders. His aircraft industry must be crippled and his supplies have to go up in flames.

What does the situation look like in Malaya? Pressure here can likely be more readily applied now, assuming that PzB has few reserve aircraft left in the Empire. As an idea (and not sure if it's feasible), a drive for Hanoi might put your LBA in range of his Chinese bases. This could only be good...perhaps even allowing you to take some bases inside of China to directly threaten his industry....pipe dream maybe, but might be worth looking at...it will likely get you more than an attack on India would (unless the cut off units in India automatically join up once their bases are cleared...in which case you should go all out for it).

Anyways...excellent playing.

Any chance now that KB is gone and his airforces are commited at Iwo to try to hit tinnian or guam? As soon as you can get LB heavies to pound Iwo and Bonnin and keep it suppressed you might be able to move your fleet away and hit something else. Fighting on 2 seperate fronts, one against your fleet air wing and one agaisnt the USAF might be more than he can cope with. Even if he can cope with 2 seperate fronts at once it ups the attrition battle and depletes his already hurtting forces

He has certainly pulled a lot of army reserves from somewhere - the combat strength on iwo has doubled. If you can keep those units stuck on iwo he will be much more limited in reacting to another move.

Are any of the Islands Nth of Japan worth looking at?

I am not sure about over reacting but his ability to reinforce by air is making me pause.

I have held the 5 Divisions of the 2nd wave at Marcus because I do not think even they will be enough to force a decison at Iwo - he has to many men to well dug in and despite crippling losses his transports still fly.

If after a bombardment campaign I start to see a fall off in his AV I may consider another Corps going in but I am loathe to commit more men to an unwinnable fight.

I have sent the 503rd Para Regt take Andaman Islands they got 3:1 on first day and I am sending Superforts to suppress Rangoon to avoid any transport savings this time.

I have landed two divs north of Palembang and was planning on attacking the base and taking the oil (and fuel generation) as it would be usefull.

OK next steps I don't know my Carriers will need some refit time so my next move has to be supportable by LBA.

There is one obvious target if I delay the attack on India for 3 months I could attempt an overland attack on Bangkok/Saigon its success would depend on how much of the China Army has been deployed to stop it.

I will have a strong army to push north and if I could get into LBA range of Hong Kong or Formosa then it has real possibilities.

"Dominating" the sea lanes is very tough in this game. Players have total and absolute control over their transport craft so they can easily "banzai" in very large transport TF's stuffed with troops and/or supply. Even if attacked, if they can reach the hex, sunk transports will dump their troops onto the base.

The game mechanics assist this via the search routines which may be arguably a bit generous in their abiltiy to spot any and all TF's if the range is close to moderate, and then allow air attacks to be launched so that makes placing surface assets in "blocker positions" a tougher positon. It used to be tougher still in the old days when "hits" on transports didn't damage the contents (supply etc) at all but there's still room for improvement. For one, transport/merchant craft are way too durable in the game.

Finally, there's no restriction on load/unload amounts so if you sail in 100 AK's to Iwo, all 100 unload at the same rate. That leads to greatly accelerated reinforcement.

Andy, I agree with Jolly Pillager above.  Looking at your last AAR, his AV is now larger than yours on Iwo.  However, yours is large enough to hold your position.  Given your command of the sea, as long as you keep your initial corps on the island and strong enough so as not to be ejected, he will have to keep more troops on Iwo because you could always, say, double your forces there in a weeks time with superior sea power.

You will occasionally have to run in a supply convoy to your forces, which could be a good excuse also to run in a cruiser TF for bombardment or slower BB's.  Keep some P-51s from Marcus (when sufficient) on LRCAP, another group to escort some LBA on constant Airfield attacks.  Keep a few groups in reserve back in Hawaii to rotate fresh planes in to keep the pressure.  A couple of months of this will wear him down significantly.  The divisions rebuilding on Marcus will be a good reserve, exploitation force for Iwo.

I would almost say go north to Hokkaido or perhaps Sakhalin first to suppress Hokkaido.  There are two bases on Sakhalin, the lower one I believe starts in stock at AF level 4 and the middle one is port/af 4 with ability to build to 6 and overexpand to 9.  If you go there, land with every division you can muster and have Army fighters and fighter bombers (P47,P38) on transports.  Then as soon as you can, hit the southernmost part of Hokkaido to cut off reinforcement to the island.

Giving it a little more thought, a strong, maximum landing on the lower port on Sakhalin is probably the way to go.  I would bring in 6 divisions in the first wave if you can with 3 more follow on.  2-3 days you should have the place.  Make sure you bring stacks of Seabees and AV Support to repair the place.  If you grab the middle base on Sakhalin next you expand to port 9 pretty quickly and then you have a mining base as well.

The move from the South into India with a few divisions is not a bad play for VP purposes.  The other move to secure LBA bases to hit China and the PI from the South is also good.  If you have the resources to do both without endangering the drive to North Japan then definitely do so.

Also, remember the Soviets will be coming in and a lot of those divisions will upgrade to Corps as I understand it.  Soviet air power is short legged, but, it will cut off any hiding place in North China, Manchuria for Japanese air forces to rest and rebuild.

I will say with Jolly, that there can be little or no let up in pressure right now.  His biggest defense is his ability to mass air power around on interior lines.  So, you must threaten in the highest number of places that he knows he has to defend (Iwo is a good example, he is committed and cannot pull back).  Once you have started down the road of suppressing his air power, you cannot slow down the pressure.

Best of luck.  Good AAR.

I would also say, that if the troops are loaded and you have enough ships ready to go, I would not wait long to strike elsewhere.  You might even feint your transports towards Bonin then to Sendai then to Hokkaido and then land on Sakhalin.  Let him see all the places you can go while your going there.

i say go for Formosa, that will give you B29 base's to strike the training areas in China and hit the home islands. Kill 2 birds with one stone

Aye thats how PZB did it he sent in a mix of 2 or 3 100 ship convoys, FT's TF's and lots of single ship TF's add to that Transport aircraft that I was killing at 40 per day and he was able to out reinforce me - it cost him but not as much as it should have done but what is done is done.

OK a new plan...

How about this

1. 1st Aus Army strikes North towards Bankok with 6 or 7 Divs.

2. 4 or 5 US Divs land somewhere else from the sea pincering him

3. 6th US Army lands 15 Divisons onto......KOREA in one wave !!!!!

Just before the Soviets enter the war say in May

Now if SEA goes well I perhaps land in Formosa instead but I play it by ear for a while

I dont like being stalemated but reinforcing failure would be a mistake so no more troops will be committed until I know what I am doing.

Andy how do you plan on escorting your convoy to korea? Wont you have to deal with the entire Home Defence Airforce that could be very high in quality and #s? Aslo where would you stage such an attack without it being spoted and picked off?

 Details mere details

I dont know I am still thinking about options but he wont have a HD AF with his losses so far I am sure his entire force (probably apart from a few Shinden to be Sqns) has been committed.

Also dont forget I have suffered heavy losses but the pilots that remain are the biggest baddest bunch of ******* ever to strap on a Hellcat....

One of the reasons my losses have been dropping is the quality of my remaining pilots ;)

If you give him a month or two he'll get his AF back in good shape however.

You have to bring 1mil+ supplies and all other stuff in one go if you go for Korea.

Ouch seems like your losses were prety high, 40 wildcats can you affoard to lose wildcat pilots like that? I mean they are still decent convoy escorts arent they?

Would defending your supply line to your forces in Korea be do-able? Are you better off getting a few bases for LBA cover first?

Now you have the Andamanes, you should attack and recon all those coastal bases in Inida. Maybe you´ll find one you could grab in a few days!
I am quite sure PzB doesn´t have more than 4 or 5 divisions left in India. Possibly you should do one landing to make him bring his reinforcements and then strike a second base.
You now have every possibility in the west! I still say do Colombo first, just to get those Brit reinforcements, should be two additional corps.

"Plan red" for India Malaya:
1. Cut supply line towards Burma
2. Landing in Malaya and liberating Rangoon
3. Make invasion in India (best in a central lying base so he needs to cover many possible advance routes.
4. Reopen supplylines towards China (airlifting)
5. advance towards Bankok Saigon
6. Destroy Chinas resources
7. Advance along the coastline, try to kill some of his divisions by pocketing them
8. put strategiv bombers into Chinese coastal hexes and bomb each and every base in range into stoneage
9. Attack Formosa, rebuild it as fast as possible
10 wage strategic war against Japan.

Sakhalin sounds like a good place -- you can put a lot of aircraft into it and commence bombing Japan. I think Korea is a step too far -- the Soviets will take it anyway shortly after they enter the war, so why waste the US troops there?

When will you be able to start an offensive with your Chinese troops?

India is on the agenda but I have decided to delay it a little while in favour of an overland campaign aimed at Saigon and Palembang.

India can wait to some extent

Re China I am more or less keeping China quiet if I attack all bets are off that s the deal with PZB but he isnt really in a position to do much about it at present so I may consider re opening the theatre

Hi Andy.. Im really new and so only have initial impressions of land warfare in SE Asia.. that impression being everything moves slow as hell. When you say overland to Saigon..do you mean form Southern China I assume? Can you post a map (if it isnt too much trouble) of the situation down there.  I think that is a good plan really.. at this stage and in this context, it cant be something he is expecting.

Don't you think it would be a little unfair to have the benefit of not losing China in the early years of the war only to use it to kick PzB when he's down now? This sort of thing is one of the reasons I prefer a no-holds barred game. At least then there's no question that whatever the other person does is fair game since the whole aim IS to kick the other person while they are down...

Problem is that PzB uses China as his "training" ground. IMHO this is the main reason for Andy's problems in the Bonins (other reason is that PzB is a true master of WITP naval warfare). The "ground-training" seriously unbalances this game (combined with the limited numbers of Hellcats and trained Navy pilots available). Basically Andy needs to close the training grounds asap.

But once PzB receives Shindens, Andy will be toast anyway. It will be impossible for him to counter lots of Shindens with experienced pilots. PzB will not only have better pilots but simply outproduce the Allies.

Im not sure China training is "unfair"... in the game, the Japanese player in particular is given a lot of lee way to change what Japan really did in the war.. for example, realize how crap the Oscar is and switch production and upgrades to fighters that are worth something..Tonies for example.  Well..one thing the game doesnt allow Japan to do is to realize that the war is going to be more than a few months so that they need to have a training program that produces..you know..pilots at a rate of more than 10 a month.   To me its no different than the Allied player holding off all offensives until he receives F6Fs.. in RL this would be not feasible for political and technical reasons. One you couldnt simply admit to the general public that your equipment is inferior, two, until the F6F was put into combat you wouldnt "know" that it was going to be a war winner.  Plenty of aircraft failed to live up to their promise and naval commanders simply couldnt say to the civilian leadership "well..we think next year our new fighter will be a better match...so we are just going to run and hide til then".

Ive seen a lot of agonizing over the China-training..but if you grant that Japan could change everything else..why not that one particular fact?

Lets be clear this was never a no holds barred game and China was a live theatre in the air when I took the game over it was only when I was able to upgrade to P40N's when I shouldnt have - at that point we agreed to stand down the air war in China. (I withdrew Chinese fighter sqns and when they returned they were P40N's because no I16's were in the pool) this was unfair so I shut down the Chinese AF giving PZB a free hand.

BUT I now own all of Malaya and have AF's in range of China so why shouldnt I try to shut down his training bases ?

I will keep land forces quiet unless he starts something.

My advance on Saigon would come via Bankok from forces in Malaya.

Nemo in a no holds barred game I would agree with you but this was never that type of game if it was I would be using air mining, I would be basing B29's on lvl 4 AF's, I would be massing heavy bombers for night raids, I would be stacking my carriers into impenetrable deathstars and landing 4,000 AV onto Iwo in a single day.

None of these I have done. PZB did not attack China by land after he realised how crap land combat was and how easy it would be to starve China by resource bombing recognising it was far too easy to knock China out of the war as he had done India. Which is a decison I respect - after my I16's upgraded in an impossible way I stopped my China AF which I think was also correct but to let that stand when I own all of Malaya and have paid in blood to attrit his AF over Iwo seems a little off.

Now I am happy to discuss this and have initiated discussions with PZB on the subject

lol Shindens and Reppu I am willing to bet he can produce hundreds of them !!!! I get P51D's which I can equip 5 Sqns with and 3 of those are 3 months away !!!!

My issue with China training is not the ability to produce 55 - 60 xp pilots I have no real issue with that.

They pay in supply and ops losses and need to take groups out of the line its a little fast but I can live with that if Japanese player restricted themselves to say 60xp and only performed it in China and not on cut off remnants so that they can keep fighter reserves near the front and in training I for one would whinge a lot less.

My issue is the 65 70 75 and 80 xp aces that are produced in massive numbers allied to PDU I think we may well find this makes the game impossibel to play as the allies especially when every single base will have level 9 forts no matter if its a sandbar in the middle of the Ocean.

We are only now beginiing to see the real problems that occur in late war as more competative games get this far.

I can see your point. I would bet that in the future new house rules would be made stipulating to what level Japan can train its pilots in China or (in my PBEM game) the Phillipines. I guess the debate now would be to what level it should be allowed. You mention 55 to 60..  I agree that 80 isnt appropriate.. I would think 60 or 65 is reasonable.

Like you mentioned, its sort of uncharted territory now so I suppose this AAR will spawn a few new house rules or at least self imposed guidelines.

OK this has turned out a little more controversial than I thought

Its like this with Shinden and Reppu on the horizon as Keregulen said  I cannot afford my 30xp pilots to be taking on 70xp vets from china ground attack training and in case you are wondering about 50% of all USN  carrier pilots are now sub 40xp

I am producing 120 F4U1D’s and 144 Hellcats a month and 60 trained navy pilots I am willing to bet that PZB is more that doubling that in Zekes alone never mind other air

Its crap but I should have at least 2,200 Hellcats in my pool just now and there is no way I should be getting 30xp pilots for my carriers we play the game we are given - this needs to be fixed the USN should not be this strapped for pilots my Ops losses cannot keep up with my Navy pilot losses.

I don't know when or how many the Japanese get but I cannot sit and wait China has been quiet because my planes upgraded do I just sit back and let PZB train 2,000 pilots in 3 months when all I will get is 180 navy pilots someone tell me this is ok and I will back off I dont see how I can let his training ramp back up
