I am not sure that that's a good idea at this time.

The sad and simple fact is that PzB can recover from his losses far far more quickly than you can.

If you let off now to rebuild all you will be doing is going from a level playing field of untrained pilots thrown into combat back to a Japanese reserve of thousands of trained pilots while the USN will not have recovered a fraction of this amount...you will be in even harder straights next attack as a result.

The pressure on his airforces MUST be maintained...he cannot be allowed the breathing room to place large numbers of aircraft on so called training.

As you youself pointed out...180 vs. 2000+ trained pilots in 3 months is simply unacceptable...your kill rate isn't high enough to deal with that. You can of course use Chinese based air to deteriorate his "training" to some extent...but it will be easier for those P-40's to do their work if the best fighter units are fighting you in the Pacific instead of flying escort in China.

Also do not underestimate the pressure that can be put on his industries by constant heavy attrition...he surely has large stockpiles of HI, oil, and resources at this time...the best way to burn through these is to force his factories to go at full blast replacing losses.

The key to absolute air superiority over the Home Islands in the second half of '45 (allowing a strat bombing campaign that might even the score a little) is to keep his aircrew quality on the ropes now.

Anyways...enough preaching for now

Just remember that backing off for a breather is much better for him than it is for you...and will be as long as hundreds of pilots can bomb Chinese bases and become aces doing it.

IMHO, reopening China theatre at this time and in this way, might be seen as kind of opportunitism and not too fair. The Allies should have better way to deal with the difficulties.

Hi Andy.. I dont think its really contraversial..its just that people look at it differently. Its clear that as the war goes on the US should be getting more and more pilots per month. It should accelerate. 150 or so in 1942.. 200 in early 43, 250 in late 43, a jump to 400 in early 44, etc.  Probably also with the number of planes.

In the game of "I wish", ideally there would be a kind of meter the allied player could control. The meter would show how well the war in Europe was going, and then could decide what percentage of material is used on the Pacific war (thereby adjusting his own production).  Allocate too little to Europe one would start to "lose" there and there would be consequences.. maybe recalled ships, planes, or army units.  Allocate enough there to get the job done quickly, you could get a big production boost in 44 and 45..

I totally agree you shouldnt be having to use untrained 30xp pilots.  Maybe you and Pzb should have a talk about it. If your pilots are going to be 30s..then perhaps in an admission this is a fault in the game (that hasnt been play tested this late in the war) he would agree to curtail his training to some degree. Maybe not completely.. I would argue that in fact you have been taking casualties at a higher rate than the US at this point in the war so the number of trained pilots would have suffered..but I would also argue that the US, with its mentality, simply wouldnt have sent off 30xp pilots to the war...

A big part of the problem is overly deadly A2A I think. And Im not sure how players can adjust to that.

Final note.. you might be overestimating how much training he is getting done. I know in my own case (and Im no where near the player he is admittedly) its not the level people have mentioned in this thread..

Sorry to be a pain.. Im still new and this discussion is a good way for me to think all this stuff through. I appreciate it!

I agree. Simply none has played this far. So essentially this is not a normal game anymore. It has become the "training ground" of the entire WITP community. We can safely predict some house rules revision would be widely adopted based on lessons learned here. So a good and fair game is highly expected. Cheer up!

But it is fair, that China can be put out of the war so easily?
Obviously you cannot imagine the problem:
PzB produces thousands of planes and trains his boys in China (which Andy left alone after he got too good fighters, very fair of PzB, really) while Andy is stuck with some phantasy production which is about 20% of what the US really produced. Tell us please, how one should handle that difficulty.

The problem is there is no right answer.

If I do nothing PZB will simply retrain his pilots and he will have 2,000+ elite pilots again plus the Shinden/Reppu while I am stuck with 30xp pilots and 180 trained navy pilots.

The game just does not work.

We closed down China purely because of my planes upgrading when they should not have done so. It was right and proper - PZB was keeping supplies low in China trying to keep me below 20,000 and he was managing it BUT by a quirk of the game I got P40N's so we had a discussion and PZB got a free hand in China.

Remember when I took on the game China was quiet on the ground but it was active in the air - it was only because of the game quirk that we shut it down.

Now having said all of that I recognise the accusation of opportunism that has been levelled at me.

The real question is if PZB knew I was going to do this would he have thrown as many trained pilots at me over Iwo - is it fair after he has destroyed his AF to not allow him to at least partiallly rebuild.

I guess had I told him 4 weeks ago that I was considering this then that would have been reasonable as it stands it is perhaps unreasonable - the fact that the allies are screwed on airframes and pilots should not affect the inherant unfairness of a 7 14 or even 28 day deadline in these circumstances.

So I am going to propose the following to PZB.

1. I will not interfere with training with Chinese based aircraft until 1st March
2. I will not use US or RAF aircraft in China at all until 1st April.

That should allow PZB to replenish at least some of the pilots he perhaps would not have thrown at Iwo had he known this was my intention.

Does that sound reasonable ?

Andy

As of 1st march

i am not sure this computes...

The (imo: flawed) game mechanics allow him to build up a force of trained pilots and good planes that in actual events the Japanese could never hope to possess... he used these to savage your forces and now is left with little - which is what he should have had in the first place. He got a free ride based on the game mechanics, and now people are crying foul that you are not allowing him a second free ride.

Have to agree.....the "training" method of bombing bases makes a mockery of the in-built training mission which was calibrated specifcially to conform to RL practices. While some exp gain via ground attack is unavoidable (for example, in my game with Rroberson, i have much of my Commonwealth airforce fighter/fighter bombers on ground support missions attacking Japanese troop concentrations in support of my own forces pushing into Burma.....something that was one of their primary jobs there in RL), one should not be bombing bases specifically to build exp. Japan's RL problem (and Germany's) was lack of resources to maintain a pilot cadre under attrition warfare.

I have to agree here.......as mostly a Jap player.......I never use on map training in this fashion....becuase it does exploit the game Mech.........PzB was allowed to do it once.....why should he be allowed to do it again?.......but as always...esp. in late war games.......the key is to talk things over with your opp.........

Thanks guys I appreciate the thoughts I don't want to cause grief for anyone its an interesting debate and as I said there is no 'right answer' its a case of being reasonable to all parties.

Considering how far you've both gotten, obviously the discussion level between you and PzB is excellent. I'm sure you'll both work it out. (it's too bad you didn't invest the Marianas.....B-29's would do wonders against his plane industries)

Marianas had 100k troops each behind level 9 forts and that was the first time I lost all my Hellcats and Navy pilots I had to withdraw I hated it but I had no choice.

PZB then re trained all the pilots he lost in China which is why I am unwilling to repeat the process.

Hi Nik,

I would also tend to agree with a caveat.

The normal pilot training model in WitP is based upon the conditions that the Japanese encountered in RL. Declining resouirces and oil resulted in declining training levels. But if the Japanese player avoids these conditions in the game, he is still penalized in his pilot training.

As an example, I currently have 3 Zero Sentai training at a base away from the action using the normal pilot training method. These Sentai were hard hit during earlier battles and had to be rebuilt. They have been training for the last 3-4 months and only one has reached 60 experience. The other two are around 55 exp. That means they have increased their experience by about 10-12 points over 90 days. That is unacceptable IMO. I would have to remove a unit for 6-9 months to bring the experience anywhere close to the level of the enemy's. Except for using China for training, there is no acceptable alternative for the Japanese player to train pilots.

IRL, 3 months of dedicated training as allowed by WitP should greatly improve a pilot's skill, even if it was only mock combat against their squadron mates. Unfortunately, it does not. Let me clarify this, it isn't so much the small increase gained as it is the staring exp level for non-trained pilots. The game does not have a routine that allows the Japanese player to increase the number of trained pilots he receives from the pool. I wouldn't mind seeing the number of trained pilots in the pools be based on the level of resources/oil/HI in the home islands. A dynamic pilot training porgram would also give the allied player greater incentive to interdict the flow of resources.

Andy uses daily air raids on Mandalay which results in substantial training for his units. I find this fully acceptable as it is a front line base, that if active, could present a danger to his forces. I, on the other hand, have no similar base that I could do the same without incurring substantial losses as Andy has enough airpower in place to make this method useless for maintaining pilot experience. Even without defenders in place, the distance I would have to fly would make ops losses prohibitive.

In my game with Andy, I have avoided using ground training for pilots as I do not believe in using this method on a large scale for training. A unit here and there, sure but not on a massive scale such as what PzB uses. However, I fully understand why he does it and sympathize with the need.

Why should this be unacceptable? I don't understand your problem here. Pilots with XP between 55-60 are trained and combat ready. Did you ever play the Allies in a campaign game? I'm in March 1944 now, playing the Allies (PBEM). Most of my newly arriving airgroups have XP below 60. There're some exceptions (mainly USN and USMC), but (as you'll probably know) Allied pilots with 100+ missions are sometimes withdrawn from the theatre (dice-roll dependant, simulating their use as instructors).

i'll beat the dead horse a bit more: training into the 50-60 level is one thing... getting super-dogfight/interceptor pilots (70-80 exp) out of bombing rocks (undefended or essentially undefended targets) is something else. USN pilots by the end of the (actual) war had 2-3 YEARS of training (including training in bombing rocks), not 2-3 months - and they enter the game somewhere in the 60s exp.

Lets be clear both sides get unlimited single circuit solo basic flight pilots which for the Jpanese is a stretch in itself

3 months to go from there to combat ready at 55xp is about right.

Is the issue lack of flexibility ?

The allies dont have the same issue as their pilots are off map trained therefore actually the Japanese get unlimited 'basic qualified' pilots and 30 free combat trained pilots a month

I dont want to get into a fight about this because the game is as it is.

I would argue allied pilot numbers should be boosted for the US at least to be de facto unlimited and that the Japanese should be given 20 x 100 plane sqns with no planes and no pilots at start that are only capable of performing training missions (plus possibly Kamikaze).

The sqns and these sqns only should have a 'draw a rookie' pilot button and be permanently assigned to the Home Defence restricted command  and a return 'trained' pilot to pool button cap the xp at 50 and hey presto if the Japanese can generate the frames and commit the supplies to allow flight training thats great then they can train as many pilots as they like 2,000 pilots/say 2 months to get to 50 and you can get 1,000 pilots a month trained - IF you commit the frames, supplies and pilots to do so.

I have NO real issue with any numner of 50 - 55 xp pilots its the 60+ ones that concern me when the allies are so heavily hamstrung

The problem is that the Japanese air forces quickly become non-competitive once 1943 is reached.

According to the manual your average experience levels for trained pilots in 1944 should be 75 (USN) and 65 (USAAF/USMC/Brits).

Now compare that to the Japanese trained pilot pools arrive at 50 (IJA) and 45 (IJN) for the same period. And that is the real issue. The Japanese pllayer is penalized with poor pilot replacements (all 10 IJN and 20 IJAAF per month) regardless of how well he has fought the war. He has no way of training these guys to anywhere near decent levels without resorting to on-map training. In Andy's game with PzB, the game would have been over a long time ago had it not been for PzB's China training.

And, yes I have played an allied campaign albeit vs the AI. I am currently in Jan 45 and even the most inexperienced allied fighters wipe the floor with Japanese pilots. To turn your question around: Have you ever played the Japanese into 1944? Or even to the end of 1942? If you have, then you will see that without on-map pilot training, the Japanese might as well surrender the moment the Hellcat arrives.

Anyways, it is what it is so I will drop it for now.

Chez

Should be - but i never saw numbers anywhere near this in the game... usually i was happy if i got a USN pilot with 60 exp. into Jan 1943 (supposed to be 70), USAAF pilots were around 50 (not 55), and "untrained" guys were from 20-27 range, usually not even 30 (i think i even got some Dutch pilots as low as 17). i'd be curious to see if anyone is drawing trained ALlied pilots in this range. i suspect the numbers the manual is quoting might be what the AI gets.

The manual is wrong or rather misleading

All pilots arrive at the preset level throughout the war so I think its 60 for USN and 55 for USAAF and 80 I think for the 10 pilots the IJapaneseN get these pilot xp levels do not change between 41 and 45 each month you will get that level of traioned pilots into the pool.

The table in the manual for the movement over time ONLY applies to reinforcement sqns that have not had their xp specifically set in the manual

i.e. VF 17 arrive preset to have 80 xp pilots but a CV Sqn with no specifified xp level in the manual will arrive at 70xp in 42 and 75 in 43

or to use a Jap example a George Sqn arriving in 44 with preset xp can be 70, 80 or whatever the scenario designer has set if nothing is set it will arrive at 75xp in 42, 60 in 43, 45 in 44 etc etc

That is why scenario designers need to be sooo carefull about messing with Japanese free pilots if you give the IJN 100 free pilots a month at 70xp they will get that level from 41 to 45 !!!!

OK things are starting to settle down a little my heavies attack the AF at Bonin this is the begining.

Some enemy ships are sighted NNE of Marcus I will send a carrier TF to check it out on their way home

I have decided not to keep ships loaded with troops at Marcus I am withdrawing the follow on forces to Midway I have decided NOT to commit them so I dont wantr them staying on ships to long and gettign fatigued so I will withdraw them.

1st ANZAC Army is moving up Malaya towards Bankok I don't expect them to take it as the real thrust will be an Amphib landing in the Saigon area.

A convoy has been sent to get 3USMC off of the beaches they are wasted where they are.

Time to switch the axis of advance once more PZB won this round but it cost him.

Op plan Yellow is declared a failure time to think again I think the concept was sound it was my execution that made it fail.

OK roundup time well where to begin....

I am convinced that the direct approach was correct given the time pressure and that the USN should have had the strength to finish Iwo alone BUT I miscalculated lured in by deceptive weakness. (p.s. the time pressure is more around his industry than anything else he will produce 500+ Shindens and Reppus a month if I let him - I need to pressurise his industry)

I attacked and should have taken more weight on the attacks at Wake and Marcus and only after they were mine should I have went for Iwo. Someone made a Market Garden analogy a few posts back and they were correct. I had intel that he only had 30,000 men on Iwo I wanted to take it before he reinforced .....well that worked out well didn't it !!!!

I could whinge about game mechanics but I wont we play the game we are given In hindsight

Marcus should be lvl 4 AF and Port before the attack on Iwo
I should have feinted against North Japan
My plan to land 1 reinforced Corps was a mistake I should have taken 9 Divisons and landed them all on one day AFTER bombers from Marcus had closed the AF's.

(Technical issue that P51D's cannot reach Iwo from Marcus so my raids would be unescorted unless I committed carriers)

So I tried to do it on the cheap and with speed and audacity and it blew up in my face.

I now have 1 Corps stuck on Iwo without a friendly AF.

On the plus side I have shattered KB and his surface fleet but it cost me my Naval Air that will take 6 months to rebuild my pilot strength. (although I can cover some of this with USMC pilots)

I have 4 CV's fit for action at Marcus the rest need refit and 2 more on West Coast within 10 days the rest need at least 2 months rest.
