It may look like aI am scattergunning a little but there is method to my madness ....honest !!!

I want to stretch him out and make hime cover different objectives.

It is amazing just how much airpower the allies have and because of the bases and positions I inherited I am able to evffectively apply it. The allies in late 43 even without SEAC front are a formidable force.

I am able to continually rotate Sqns and whole groups to keep the pressure on while keeping up a full campaign in the Marshalls and SWPAC as well as a lesser campaign in North Australia.

I have the ground units and the shipping my only lack is heavy battle line units to support invasions

Frank I am finally in a position to take yours and the others advice who recommended hitting Truk !!!

It will take about 4 days to prep and gather the sqns at my forward bases

Operation DRAGON will involve at least 4 Sqns of P38J's who can just make the escort journey to Truk from Sag Sag and Green Island.

I am then going to use every B24J/D and 17 I can muster.

I want at least 200+ bombers going in and I am going to attempt to flatten the place.

Andy

It might have good chances now:
You killed a bunch of his fighters there (what does he have there? Oscars, Zeroes, Zekes, Tojos, any newer models, I am afraid I lost it somewhere in yout combat reports.)
He might have transfered his carriers to rebuild his airgroups, so you would not have to fight through the additional cap.
His supply levels might be reduced yet by supporting Kavieng massively, so repairing the damage would hurt him even more.

You are trying to get the airfields, then the port? Or do you only want to flatten his airfields there.
But hey, that is far future. First nail his airfields and stop his cap, then you can plan further havoc for PzB.
Don´t forget to bring massive amounts of supply

Do you have spare AK/AP? would you think it might improve your situation to send say 30 empty AK towards his bases in northern Japan. He might think you try some invasion and put some fighters or bombers there. The additional landing of some small unit from sub would even improve this scenario.
You did some of this small landings in NG (or was it one of your ancestors?) and he reacted in force.

When you have neutralized Truk the central pacific is your´s. I am quite sure he´d try to stop you with his carriers and he would loose again. Your fighters are too strong, your AAA too superior.

Your further planning is NG, Palau/Ulithi, Okinawa, Japan? Or do you want to fight for the Phillippines (I´d try to avoid this!)?

Phase 1 will be 50% AF 50% Port I will be sending in about 300 heavies (I hope) I am pulling them in form all forward bases and all theatres for this strike.

So I am aiming for 150 against the port and 150 against the AF.

Its more a message than the start of the campaign. The campaign will start when I have Rabaul as my P38G's will be able to reach then.

At the moment I am more or less trying to secure bases to allow multiple axis of attack in the great 44 offensive.

Re this offensive I am considering many options of the main attack line.

1. Marshalls to Marianas to Okinawa
2. North Japan direct
3. NG/ Palau/Ulithi/ PI/ Formosa
4. NG/ Palau/Ulithi/ PI/ Okinawa

With lesser attacks considered after Japanese naval power is broken

1. North Austrlia/ Borneo/ Singapore
2. Karachi/Bombay
3. Kendari/ Balikapan/ PI

I have many options I just want to be positioned to take advantage of them.

My goals for the next three months are

1. As far as Siador and next two bases on NG
2. Rabaul
3. Neutralise Truk
4. Kwal
5. Kill as many Japanese pilots as possible
6. Attrit KB and his Battleships while conserving my own assets

Andy

New plan for Operation Dragon.

I am prepping three Divisions for assaults on bases along the coast of NG I will cover them with one Carrier TF at least.

THe plan is to time it such that

1. My invasion hits the 1st NG base covered by CV's
2. PZB will move fighters and bombers out of Truk or reduce the cap level to increase his strike escort.
3. I will launch operation Dragon aiming to close the AF and hit the port with LBA
4. My Carriers will move in close after his air is defeated or attrited to hit transports.

I dont have the combat replay but this turn PZB managed to get a 2 BB TF into Majuro where they attacked my transports it was a nice move pity Alabama Gp wasnt there as she would be a real handfull for a pair of Kongos especially backed by Colorado with the xp gains they have had bard busting.

USS Idaho was handed back to the navy today by the yard dogs after she transits to Pearl she will join Colorado replacing Alabama who will join South Dakota and North Carolina in a fast surface action TF.

HMS Formidable after five days of no sys damage repair at Pearl is trsansferring to SF to take advantage of the facilities there.

I estimate about 5 additional days before Dragon is ready.

1st/ 4th and 1st Aus Cav Divs are loading.

In NG I have LST's/ LCT's and small AP's sufficient to assault load 2 large and one small division

After these invasions I will consolidate my assault transport and Carriers at Tarawa for Operation Goblin the invasion of Kwal.

I want to use max effort on this strike with at least 4 Divisons in the assault wave and as many armoured regts as I can find.

A pre requisite of this operation is the subdual of Maloep.

I get lots of nice new shiny carriers soon the allied deathstar will be unstoppable then !!!!!.

I could go for a cruise....

10 CV's 8 CVL's 7 or 8 replenishment CVE's and lots of AO's could go touring near Japan now that would be afun and should dislocate PZB's defences.

Hmmmmm

It is tempting raid near Saipan or sail between Japan and PI picking off transports.

Or perhaps not its probably to much of a risk.....I should take Rabaul and Kwal and be happy.

Hi Andy,

Some questions:

the 3 division for NG. What starte are they in? Readiness levels etc?

You have 10 x CV's, 8 CVL's now?

I'd still err on the side of caution. KB is still nearly at full strength. Why risk facing it now (and potentially losing the near parity you have) when you can advance from Rabaul, up NG and in the Marshalls?

Just my thoughts.

Regards,

Steven

They are in New Guinea 100/100 but low experience as they are militia Divs.

I will land one Div on one base to test reaction if garrisons are as low as they appear 1 unit 2000 men looks like a NLF to me.

Then I will use 1 Division per base gain some xp take the base then witrhdraw the 2 Inf Divs and use 1/3 of the Cav Div to secure each one.

Alternatively I am considering just using the Cav Div in 1/3's and saving 1st and 4th Inf Divs to increase the assault on Kwal.

Re CV's Im not really planning on the deep strike but I will use them to cover the invasion the deep strike would be for 3 months away when I have that strength at present I have 6 USN CV's and 7 CVL's in 3 TF's 2 in NG and 1 in Marshalls.

I will be concentrating in Marshalls for Kwal Invasion

Operation Dragon was a huge success 300 plus 4E bombers escorted by 100 P38's at max range went in hard and fast and found......not much. No KB no masses of fighters I destroyed over 250 aircraft on the ground mostly transports. I did shut down the airfield so I have to be happy.

KB I am assuming is off covering PZB's invasion of Kai Island. I have part of one division and fragments of several engineers. I am not going to react to much as it is ancilliary to the main thrust and I am a little stretched at the moment.

In NG Siador and Madang invasion forces are at sea.

Spruance and Halsey are near Sag Sag heading North at Full speed to try and hit Transports fleeing from Truk.

2nd day attacking Truk my fatigue and ready aircraft are very very down despite 2 reinforcement groups I only just get to 300 bombers today. I manage to destroy another 250 aircraft on the gorund so Im happy mostly transports again.

Spruance and Halsey found and destroyed a ML TF West of Truk and are moving east to join Towers near Kwal.

1st 1 to 1 on Rabaul. Going to rest one day bomb the absoulute crap out of the place then going for a shock attack as my armour has finally arrived I now have 200 Grants there to back up my Infantry.

I am pulling 3rd NZ Div out of Lae to concentrate at Gili Gili a 4 Divison force

Landings on Siador and Madang tomorrow

My carriers will renzedous tomorrow or the next day.

The new Essex Class Carrier USS Lexington was launched today to avenge her namesake.

I dont have an airgroup for her so Ill need to use one of my landbound Hellcat Gps.

After the raid around Entiwok I will be returning all my carriers to Pearl for a refit as most ships are at 8 - 10 sys now and are in bad need of some yard time

Andy

the Launching of Lexington gives me 7 USN CV's and I think 8 CVL's so my strength is growing.

I almost caught the Jap BB fleet at Entiwok and I hope to catch at least one of them tomorrow although the Kongos can run fast

Andy's mistakes on Amphib operations.

OK i have been doing a lot of amphibs as the allies and I thought I would put my thoughts on the mistakes I have made and the good things I have noticed.

OK 1st observation Atolls are very very different.

For Atolls

1. ONLY use LST's and Barges for troops you must unload everything on day 1 if you dont you will shock attack every time you unload. I managed to wreck 40th Div on Maloep with this one.

For all

1b. use rule 1 if possible especially Barges which are your friend (I love LCT's) if not use small AP's.

2. Tanks and Marine Divs are your friend in all amphibs the number of Combat Engineers a Marine Div gets are huge to get through lvl 9 forts Marine Divs are a must for the spearhead. Armour is superb for the initial shock attacks.

3. BB's and CA's not CL's not DD's in the invasion TF are a must if there is any kind of DP or CD gun there otherwise a Rabaul will hurt you bad 51/100 ships sank in one day !!!! (Be very carefull not to lose PH BB's or R class BB's they are very very usefull in amphib ops !!!!)

4. Preparation preparation preparation not less than 50 or you will suffer (enough said)

5. Invasion TF commanders good land rating seems to help.

6. AK's only carry supply for invasion but have plenty of them to make sure your units have a nice supply

7. DMS and MSW are vital for heavily mined based use the Feinder method to clear them (BB Bombardment TF's with DMS's in TF with escorts do not bombard)

8. PT Boats are your friend they are expendable as are bargesand are exceptionally annoying for the IJN light and heavy TF's

9. Not sure about this one going to test it on Operation Goblin Invasion Force HQ's are beneficial.

10. If possible for hard invasions have a command HQ in range 100% prepped for the objective you are hitting. In this game PZB reinforced kavieng after my over reach but the extra supplies I offloaded, and the 100% prepped command HQ kept me alive. (also versus String at Koepang in our game I had 10k supplies per unit and a command HQ at Derby 100% prepped it made my invasion troops very very hard to kill despite his naval superiority)

Anyway thats my tuppence worth.

Andy

Shock attack ordered for Rabaul lets see what happens my forces are ashore at Madang and Siador but Hansa looks to be well defended.

6th 7th 9th and 3NZ Divs have all seen hard service and need a refit period.

I was going to move them all to rabaul after I take it to rest up but not sure if they will recover there.

If what I have holds at Kai island so be it I am not going to reingorce in the face of that level of enemy activity without bringing over heavy support that I need in the Marshalls.

My CV's met up I considered sending them all towards Ulithi/ Saipan where his fleet seems to be concentrating but decided its to much of a risk I am moving to the north of Entiwock and then will return to Pearl.

In the last month n this tour of duty my CV's have sank 5 enemy CA's, 1 CV, 1CVL 3 CVE;s numerous DD's destroyed over 1000 enemy aircraft and swanned about in the enmies rear areas un molested ....

You know not bad for the 1st voyage of the allied Death star !!!!

After a couple of weeks of refit they will sail again to support Operation Goblin. An a new plan I am considering Operation Hobgoblin (Entiwok)

Interesting turn

Kai island falls taking a few Engineers and about 50% of an Aus Cav Div. Not my finest moment but unless I was willing to open another major front inevitable.

I am dissapointed but the speed and ferocity of the reaction in what is a secondary theatre fills me with hope.

He must have sizeable forces in this area.

I may invade Timor in 44 just to keep him guessing.

The good news is that the concentrated Air Bombardment and 200 Grants knocked 5 levels off the forts at Rabaul they should fall tomorrow.

I am going to need to think through where I go next as this game will slow down for a while after the fall of Rabaul as I will need a huge supply surplus in forward bases for the next jump forward and I will need to redeploy slightly.

Andy

You don't think it's an exploit to put BBs in transport TFs?

To be honest never really thought about it.

With only 5 CA's and the losses I took at Rabaul I guess I dont have a choice. But I havent really thought about it.

MM no. why should it be? Historically battleships did give close support during landings.

To be honest I would prefer not to use BB's in that way I would rather have them in Bombardment TF's as they are a lot more effective when used in that way putting them in Transport TF's helps my transport TF's survive but does nothing offensively.

I dont do it out of choice I tried using CL's and lost 51 /100 ships in a TF so without CA's and with CL's not good enough my choices are limited

Today 1st Amphib Corps a truly multinational force completed the conquest of the great Japanese fortress of Rabaul !!!!

Under command at the kill were 1st US Cav Div, 9th Australian Div, 1st USMC Div (so 3 nationalities there ) 5th NZ Bde various base forces and 1st,5, 8 and 9th Aus Armoured Regts.

The Japanese defenders fled to the jungle after Grants of 9th Armoured captured the port while the Marines of 1 Marine captured the Airfield and the supply dumps.

A great victory that saw once an for all the japanese threat to Australia extinguished.

OK back to reality...

1st Cav needs 2 months rest, 1st Marines needs a couple of weeks (its amazingly in shape), 9th Australian Div needs about 4 months (this Div left El Alamein to spearhead the assault on New Britain being the 1st to land at Gasmata its at about 40/85)

I will be concentrating armour inf and HQ's at Rabaul for the next few moves

I have

1st Aus Div 100/100
4th Aus Div 100/100
6th Aus Div (Need a month of refit and prep time)
7th Aus Div (Need a month of refit and prep time)
9th Aus Div (Need 4 months of refit and prep time)
3rd NZ Div needs a month
43rd US Good to Go
1st USMC Div (Needs a few weeks)
1st US Cav Div (Needs a month)
3rd USMC Div (Kavieng)
Amercal Div (Kavieng)
1st Aus Cav Div (SPearheading the assault on Madang)

I have 6 other Regts/Bdes scattered in garrison and minor offensive ops in SW PAC area and about 7 Armoured Regts.

So basically for the next move I have 2 Militia and 1 US NG Div ready to go now. in a month I will have 5 more Divs sounds to me like I should spend the next month bombing the crap out of Kavieng Emirau and the Admiralties

Well done on capturing Rabaul - faster than most of us(including your opponent) would have thought possible.

Don't you think you would be better off sending the more worn out troops back to a non malarial base to recover eg Townsville? I am sure they would recover faster as well as the fact there will be more supplies for them in australia.

You mentioned sending your carriers back to Pearl - do you think that is a good idea when you have seen what happens to your advanced bases eg Kai island when the carriers are not around. I use Sydney with several repair ships and a fleet HQ - it works well repairing a few points of sys damage - you could rotate a few carriers at a time back to sydney for repairs and upgrades.

Your airstrike and follow-up carrier raid around Truk went well but why are you not keeping up the pressure on the airfield and port at Truk ? Your raid showed up large numbers of air transport planes - you really should try to keep them grounded (what are they up to ???). Also Truk port had lots of shipping completely at your mercy - your carriers and land-based air could have had a field day on port attacks. I just think you would be wise to keep using the carriers for now while there are good targets at truk - you should not allow your opponent time to regroup.

Enjoying the aar as always.

Heheh Asdicus I am considering rotating 9th Aus back to Australia for some R&R but I thought (and could be wrong) that a lvl 8 AF and Port was immune to Malaria especially with 999,999 supplies and fuel (which is my intent) if thats wrong please let me know.

The rest of my Division will recover in the field and like it !!!!

Shipping is actually quite tight for rotations AK's are full in supply mode and my AP's and LST's need some port time.

Sydney was considered butwith Lexington, Bataan and 3 CL's coming to join the fleet I would like to re order my TF's a little so 2 weeks at Pearl then to the Marshalls for Operation Goblin (Sydney is a little inconvenient for the Marshalls Pearl is better).

Kai Island is like no other forward base I have every other base can be LRCAPED by F4U's now if he wants to come play in CENTPAC or SWPAC I would think he was nuts I have literally 1000's of well trained experienced aircraft operating from well supplied protected bases.

I would really really like him to try !!!! Last time it cost him 5 flat tops :) If anything a raid into the gap between the Gilberts and Solomons is something I am watching for.

I Really hammered truk I am hitting it next turn but he has no ships in port they had been evacced back to Marianas and I am not quite ready to hit Saipan (YET!!!!)

Thanks for the comments

Andy

You are wrong, it is not immune to malaria.

It is supposed to be, we saw the code, but the code doesn't appear to work.

Soon find out though, just check and see if their fatigue goes below 30. If it does, its not malarial.

Once I have re organised a little I will probably detatch a 2 CV 2 CVL TF back to the Marshalls using Lex and my lowest other sys damaged CV to back up LBA but that will be all for a while

Hi, String.

Battleships did support invasions but they were normally in a separate bombardment TF and weren't actually assigned to the troop TFs.

As discussed I flattened Truk again 60 more transports bit the bullet.

Overall entering a logistical quiet spot for a while need to rebuild my stocks and refit my Inf Units.

Aussies will keep pucshing up coast of NG see how far I can get on a shoe string

Dissapointed about Rabaul may need to pull a couple of Divs back to Brisbase for refit.

Attention will switch to Marshalls for Operation Goblin next !!!

Operation Goblin begins to take shape

Available I have
V Amphib Force
3 US Corps

6th US Div
24th US Div
33rd US Div
37th US Div
24th RCT
161st RCT
503rd Para Regt

632nd US TD Bn
1st USMC Amphib Armour Regt

Now my original plan was for the two Engineer regts on Maloep to take part now they are not going to be aaialble so I am coming up short on combat engineers.

As a result I am going to transfer 2 Armoured Regts and 1st USMC Div from SWPAC for this operation. He has 50,000 men on Kwal so I will need all the help I can find. I estimate about 30 days until the assault including refit time and transfer time for units I am going to stage out of Tarawa to try and keep some secrets but he will probably pick up on it.

LST's, LCT's and MSW's will be transferred to Tarawa as will North Carolina and South Dakota giving me 5 BB's for the fight a luxury I have not had yet.

I want to land 4 Divs on 1st wave if I can put together the sealift.

Just for info

In next 24 Days I get 1 CV, 1 CVL, 2 CVE, 2 CL and 1 CA

In next 68 - 84 Days I get

1 CL
5 CA
2 Iowa class BB's
2 CV's
3 CVE's

4th USMC
28/93/31/77 US Div and 11 Aus Div plus 6 Tank Regts

Andy
