Imperial officers of the Expeditionary Brigade took the surrender of the USN 120th Base Force at Cebu today, securing control of the island, along with just under 3,000 PoW's.

Grmbl... Picture this: two turns ago, one of my ships noticed a British Cuckoo airplane overflying it about 100 miles east of Hong Kong, which told me that the carrier Argus was nearby. Now, lacking a few hundred Nells and Betties to take care of the problem, I assembled a surface combat task force to go hunt for her, led by the same four veteran battleships that had savaged the Allied cruiser force at Hong Kong a while back. Last night, they found the Argus and her escort of about a dozen destroyers southwest of Batan Island and attacked.

Did they score as much as a single hit on the Argus? Nooo... Did they sink even one destroyer? Nooo...

Then, come daybreak, did the Argus launch her torpedo planes, which subsequently managed to put a fish into the battleship Settsu? You bet!

Well, that's friction for you... The Settsu should be able to make port, and my ship crews are thirsting for revenge now.

In other news, I've done a little summary of the ships sunk on either side to date:

IJN: 1 BB, 1 CL, 10 DD, 1 MSW, 2 SS, 1 AD, 5 AP, 1 AK, 4 TK.

Allied: 1 BB, 4 CL, 15 DD, 7 PG, 3 SC, 1 SS, 1 AO, 1 AE, 2 MSW, 2 AK.

A small measure of payback today for the Settsu, as submarine No.15 slammed a torpedo into the flank of the British cruiser Weymouth south of Hong Kong. The chase continues...

Disaster struck at the main Japanese fleet anchorage at Takao today. The battleship Settsu, hit a few days ago by a British aerial torpedo limped into port in the early hours of the morning, only to be set upon by Royal Navy submarine L-1, which hit her with two torpedoes. Her crew struggled valiantly throughout the day to save her, but at 1630 hours the captain was forced to order Abandon Ship, and 25 minutes later she rolled over and sank, becoming the third battleship to be lost in this war.

This was only slightly ameliorated when one of the forces sent to hunt for the Argus came upon a small Allied squadron off Hong Kong, consisting of the French cruiser Desaix and a quartet of Royal Navy destroyers. After a long engagement, the Desaix withdrew burning along with one surviving British ship, whilst the other three slipped beneath the waves. Little damage was suffered by our ships.

The Argus had another narrow squeak today, as our ships found the enemy carrier force south of Hong Kong. Apparently all those escorting destroyers make far juicier targets.

After this night action, the USS Pillsbury and Noa are at the bottom of the sea, joined by Japanese destroyer Shiokaze.

Yeah, they can! In some of the other AAR's of later scenarios, they've been downright successful.

As I was falling asleep watching this turn, my ASW groups at Wake actually managed to score a hit on the American submarine R-17. After that, I actually DID fall asleep.

An Imperial battle squadron caught the British aircraft carrier Argus again last night, in the middle of rain squall approximately 250 miles due east of Singapore. One of our escorting destroyers managed to land a single 12 pounder hit on the US destroyer Reuben James before the cowards slipped away into the night. No matter, the Argus will soon reach the end of her rope, and find a noose there.

The war at sea erupted again this turn with a night surface action off Singapore. The same battle squadron that failed to engage the Argus group on the night of the 28th encountered a large combined Allied force, led by the British predreadnought Agamemnon and comprising British, US, French and Thai ships.

While our forces, including the first class cruiser Ikoma with her four 30.5cm guns, outgunned the enemy ships, a combination of circumstances meant that the battle must be considered a minor defeat for the Imperial Navy. No ships were sunk on either side, but several of our heavy units were very badly damaged, and the Ikoma is not going to make port.

The battlelines face off.

As predicted, the Ikoma sank today, approximately 200 miles east of Singapore. Elsewhere, Imperial troops took control of the town of Puerto Princesa.
