More ships sank today, as the battleship Hizen, grievously damaged in the first night of action at Brunei went down 120 miles northeast of Jesselton. Additionally, the freighter Atutasan Maru, the only transport seriously damaged in the unsuccessful enemy attack on the transport fleet, sank near Jesselton.

Elsewhere, the British cruiser Carysfort was torpedoed by one of our submarines, as she was approaching Singapore after returning from Brunei.

On land, troops of the 8th Division took control of Jesselton whilst others landed at Sandakan. The aim of securing a lodgment of the northeast half of Borneo is all but complete.

The town of Sandakan was taken by Imperial Rikusentai today.

At Jesselton, the transport ship Aratama Maru sank, another casualty of the Battle of Brunei.

The sixth month of the war begins, as an Imperial submarine torpedoes the Royal Navy battlecruiser Tiger at Singapore. Unfortunately, once again, the 45cm torpedo wasn't enough to sink even the previously damaged enemy ship.

The included screenshot shows the score as of 11/1.

Two stragglers from the Battle of Brunei sank today. On our side, the destroyer Hatsuyuki foundered off Taytay, whilst the British destroyer Seymour was reported sunk east of Singapore.

At Singapore herself, submarine No. 41 reported a very heavy RN depth charge attack, and that she was retiring with some damage.

(PS: that boat took almost 70 floatation damage, and isn't very likely to make it to friendly port. How's that for not hitting anything, Bill?).

This turn was a virtual carbon copy of yesterday's. Two more straggling destroyers, the Yugure and the Grenville, sank at either end of the South China Sea, and another IJN submarine was depth charged very heavily at Singapore and forced to retire, though not before torpedoing the American destroyer Hulbert.

No destroyers went down this turn, but something much heavier: the Royal Navy battleship HMS Marlborough, heavily damaged at Brunei, finally succumbed off Kuching. That went a long way to levelling the score for sunk ships:

The IJN command has decided to temporarily suspend submarine operations at Singapore, after the third submarine in as many days was heavily damaged by enemy destroyers. There's simply too many of them.

And speaking of sunken ships, here's the current confirmed tally:

IJN: 5 BB, 1 BC, 1 CA, 1 CL, 19 DD, 1 MSW, 3 SS, 1 AD, 2 AK, 6 AP, 4 TK

Allies: 4 BB, 4 CL, 40 DD, 12 PG, 4 SC, 2 MSW, 1 SS, 1 AE, 2 AO, 7 AK

Very expensive round of what turned out to be destroyer-bashing at Singapore last night. HMS Venetia and Versatile and USS Pruitt and Truxton were sunk, but unfortunately a lucky enemy torpedo strike pierced the flank of the battleship Hyuga. Annoying, to say the least...

Aside from the loss of IJN destroyer Matsu, a straggler from yesterday's action at Singapore, today was a quiet turn.

Since it's been an otherwise quiet turn, let's have a little physics demonstration. This is what happens when a pair of Mk 10 torpedoes perforate an otherwise healthy Japanese battleship:

USN PRESS RELEASE:

Yesterday a group of crack submariners previously based at Manila and now operating from a secret base in the Pacific Ocean severely crippled a Japanese Battleship off the coast of Borneo. The heroes are now returning to their secret base for a well earned rest. However, the war continues and equally brave replacements remain in the vicinity and across the Pacific region as a whole

"Returning to their base for a well-earned rest"? Guess they must have been on their way home then, when THIS happened:

It was only a single torpedo hit this time, but still annoying. The God of War is smiling on Bill for the moment...

Surface action at Kuching last night. I forgot to turn on my screenshot program before running the turn, so there's no visual presentation of the battle, although I've asked Bill to take a pic of it.

The fight featured a trio of British BC's along with cruisers and destroyers against some battleships and cruisers of mine. Several ships on both sides were badly damaged in the battle, but only the IJN destroyer Tsuta was lost.

Elsewhere, submarine No. 41, severely damaged at Singapore several days, sank today on its way back to port.

On the fourth anniversary of the end of World War I, there was (surprisingly) no activity in South Asia. No more battleships getting torpedoed...

More stragglers sinking this turn. On our side, it was the destroyer Take, while for the enemy, it was the British cruiser Southampton .

At Manilla, RN submarine K-16 has resumed its career as a disturber of the peace, willfully disregarding the large number of depth charges dropped on its head today.

Elsewhere, the use of flying boats for ASW work has really taken off (pardon the weak pun). The 4th Rec. Chutai at Wake is reporting one attack run after another on American submarines, and even several hits. It would be interesting to know what sort of effect (if any) these hits are having. Interestingly enough, all attacks on submarines are happening whilst flying Naval Search missions, not ASW patrol. Also, this particular Chutai is by far the most experienced air unit in our order of battle.

Nothing today. Apparently, my flying boat crews at Wake heard the praise I gave them yesterday, and took today off, cause they sure didn't hit anything.

A regrouping phase will probably start now, considering the losses both I and Bill have sustained in the South China Sea. Of course, the USN haven't taken any losses lately...

Nothing in the combat report.

Forgot to take screenies but the subs hit by aircraft at Wake have sustained float and system damage in the mid 20s
