It's been a while, but today we found another US submarine, 120 miles NE of Vigan. The S-17 attempted an approach on one of my convoys, but was detected by the destroyer Kaki, and driven under with a barrage of depth charges. At least two hits or close misses were heard, but a sinking could not be confirmed.

It is far from sunk

As the first month of the war draws to a close, IJA troops landed on Batan Island in order to deny its use as a base to the enemy. The enemy support unit stationed there surrendered with nary a fight.

Elsewhere, measures are in motion to rid our new territory of uninvited interlopers. I'd say more, but you'll see what I mean soon enough... MWAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!

Erhem...

The second month of the war begins with making the reacquaintance of an old enemy. The previously damaged French cruiser Waldeck-Rousseau was found 60 miles east of Singapore, limping along to the west, obviously attempting to reach the city's shipyards. One of our submarines made not one, but TWO approaches on her, each time hitting her with one torpedo. It is perhaps fitting that the attack was made by Imperial submarine O-3, formerly the German U-Boat U-55.

Elsewhere, a straggler from the American ambush at Wake a few days ago, the Nichiryu Maru, has sunk some 120 miles east of Saipan.

In the Philippines, Imperial reinforcements continue to pour into the battlezones of Luzon and Mindanao. It won't be long now...

In a vain attempt to avenge yesterday's Imperial succes, an American destroyer tried to attack the O-3 east of Singapore today. Obviously, it failed.

At Guam, our bombardment force arrived this morning and gave the island a thorough pounding. The enemy coast defences achieved three hits in return, apparently with slingshots:

Most Japanese battleships were named for geography...

Anyhoo, on with the war. A new American underwater pirate appeared in the waters near our recently acquired based at Batan Island, and was promptly pounced upon by Imperial destroyers. This constant lack of ASW success is immensely frustrating...

At Manilla, our troops attacked again today, and whilst our losses were high, we managed to penetrate and destroy one of the enemy's main fortifications. Imperial Intelligence believes that our troops outnumber the foe about 2-to-1, a bit short of the desirable ratio for a succesful attack. The difference will be compensated for by the courage of our soldiers.

At Guam, another bombardment crashed into the American positions on the island, this time illiciting no response from enemy coastal defences. Cowering in their rat holes, no doubt...

(PS: as you can see in the attached screenshot, Bill's actually ahead on points in the ships sunk category. That was from the transports he sank with his battleships at Wake a few days ago. We shall have to remedy that...)

Nothing much to report this turn, aside from our troops landing on Guam and Jolo. We'll commence the attack in both places tomorrow.

Imperial Rikusentai today planted our flag on the Island of Jolo.

On Guam, Army troops found surprisingly hard resistance. Whilst ejecting the enemy from their fortifications, they've yet to secure the surrender of the American garrison. Still, with the support of the heavy guns of the Nihon Kaigun, we will shortly conquer the place.

Off Singapore, sub action continues. Apparently, the German-designed submarines of our fleet work better than our own home-grown versions. Something to ponder...

(The screenie shows the fight east of Singapore. The insert is the damage status of my transport TF at Guam. Whilst my battleships were completely immune to the American CD fire, the same obviously doesn't go for my transports).

Imperial forces landed at Zamboanga, on Mindanao, today. Elsewhere on the island, at Cagayan, our ships continue to bombard the positions of the Philippino Reserve Division, awaiting the arrival of Army troops to storm the city.

The battle of Guam reached its expected end today. One oddity was the appearance, around noon, of a trio of American airplanes, who attempted an unsuccesful attack on our troops on the island. When the American fliers returned to their aerodrome, they found it overrun by Imperial forces. The attached photograph was found in one of the barracks at the field.

In Manilla, our forces overran the enemy's second defensive belt in very hard fighting today. Our losses continue to be high, but in the end, the indomitable Bushido spirit of the Japanese soldier will prevail over the weak-willed Westerners.

Elsewhere, submarine action continues off Singapore and at Batan Island, as inconclusive as ever. At Cagayan, another thunderous naval barrage hammered enemy positions.

Guys

This game is on hold for a short while as Terminus is experiencing technical problems with his computer. Hopefully we will be back very soon.

I'm back. Game will resume later today...

As in, now!

Submarine action continues off Singapore and Batan Island. IJN Submarine no.32 attempted an attack on enemy ASW ships at Singapore, and got two depth charge hits for her trouble. These resulted in a staggering 5 sys and 2 flt damage! Oooh, scary!

The Battle of Manilla rages on. Today, our brave troops finally cracked the enemy's inner defensive cordon, ejecting him from his fixed fortifications. We shall soon see the mettle of our enemy's pasture!

(PS: This image is from the IWM. I manicured it a bit to fit into the AAR, but this should in no way be construed as copyright infringement).

Nothing of note to report today. We continued the prosecution of US submarine S-7 at Batan Island, and managed at least two solid hits on her. Unfortunately, no lifejackets stamped "USN" floated to the surface.

In Manilla, vicious street fighting continued to claim the lives of many soldiers on both sides, as the enemy was flushed from rathole after rathole. Casuaties remain high, but are becoming less lopsided. (No more 5000 to 4!)

An old enemy popped up again today in the form of the disappeared Chinese cruisers. They were found at Legaspi (of all places); unfortunately the ones who found them were a quartet of unescorted Japanese transport ships. The results can be gleaned from the screenie. I'd forgotten all about those bastages!

(All things considered, I got off lightly. The Chinese won't...)

Nothing important happened today. That I'm prepared to post in a double-sided AAR, that is...
