Nothing to report today, aside from the continuing battle of Manilla.

"Won't be long now", he says... Well, if only General Durrant's troops would see the inevitable and surrender, then it might indeed not be long now...

Supplies or no supplies, the American and Philippino defenders continue to resist our forces in Manilla. No matter how much we outnumber them, those 3-to-1 odds just won't come!

More bombardment at Manilla this turn, but that's not the main event of the day, or I should say, night.

The Imperial Navy's battlecruiser squadron paid a little visit to Midway Island in the hours following midnight on the 29th. Once there, they encountered a large number of enemy vessels, and immediately engaged.

Forces encountered included a US destroyer squadron, of whose number the USS Hazelwood succumbed to heavy gunfire. Then, our ships came upon a group of enemy minesweepers busily removing the mines we'd laid earlier by submarine. Scattering the small enemy vessels, we sank the Turkey and the Lapwing, the latter absorbing some ten 35cm shells before finally sinking.

Moving on, we found the enemy cargo ship Mercury and pummelled her to the bottom of the sea. Finally, the previously damaged destroyer USS Williams was put out of her misery, courtesy of heavy gunfire from our battlecruisers.

The net damage to the Japanese force consisted of one destroyer hit by about half a dozen small-caliber enemy shells. She made it out of the battle zone under her own power.

(Since I'm battling my annual Christmas cold, I forgot to take proper screenshots. Sorry...)

FOLLOWING MESSAGE FOR JAPANESE IMPERIALISTS:

Your incursion into the area surrounding Pearl Harbor will NOT be tolerated. We understand that your substandard ground forces at Manila have caused a tremendous amount of frustration in Tokyo but this, in no way, excuses your current actions. Remedial action is underway - oh and watch your back, those Limeys are pretty upset as well

According to our agents in Singapore, the US ammunition ship Nitro sank today in port, finally succumbing to the damage she'd suffered on the night of the 19th.

Elsewhere, the battle of Stalingrad... erm, Manilla, continues to grind on inconclusively.

The third month of the war opens with several oceanic altercations. Imperial submarines operating in the waters around Midway report several inconsequential ASW attacks by US destroyers.

At Truk (of all places!), Dutch and Australian ships executed a short and ineffectual bombardment, sustaining severe damage from our coastal defence units. Talk about sound and fury!

And finally, oh joy of joys! Intelligence wireless intercepts have revealed that our old foe, US submarine S-8, has sunk off Balikpapan. The first submarine loss of the war, and it only took two months!

Don't forget our secret weapons: Archimedes-style death ray mirrors and flaming arrows!

Nothing to report this turn. Things are in motion behind the scenes, though. We'll see how much more trouble I can make for myself...

Only action of note today was the fall of the town of Guiuan on the southern tip of Samar.

Other than that, the game will be on hold until after Christmas. See you next week!

So much for the Christmas Peace! I'm making a stopover at home before going out again, so I thought I might as well run the turn Bill had dropped in my in-box yesterday.

The Second Battle of Wake Island. This time, the US battle line didn't find defenceless cargo transports and tankers there. The line-up was Nagato, Mutsu, Yamashiro, Fuso, Hyuga and Ise vs. Tennessee, California, Oklahoma and Mississippi.

Unfortunately, the engagement uncovered a glaring flaw in pre-war Imperial munitions procurement, i.e. the blasted inability of our AP shells to penetrate heavy armour at longer ranges. The engagement never closed to inside of 15,000 yards and even though our sharp-eyed gunners achieved several main battery (35cm, 41cm) hits on the enemy battleships, they universally failed to penetrate their thick hides.

As for traffic going the other way, the Americans failed to score even one main battery hit on our battle line. A large number of 5-inch shells impacted on our battleships, but obviously didn't inflict any significant damage.

The heaviest damage on both sides was suffered by the escorts. Three US destroyers (the Dent, Montgomery and Ramsay) were severely punished by very accurate gunfire, and all veered out of formation, burning furiously. On the Imperial side, the light cruiser Chikuma was struck by a lucky American torpedo whilst the destroyer Shimakaze absorbed a number of hits from her opposite numbers on the enemy side.

The entire Imperial battle line, supported by our battlecruiser squadron, remains combat ready.

The Second Battle of Wake continued today. Bill seems to have brought EVERY SINGLE SERVICABLE US battleship to the party to face my slightly smaller forces. Through a long series of engagement stretching through both night and day pulses, our battle lines inflicted grave damage upon each other. No battleships were sunk on either side, but the included screenshot shows the ships lost to the Imperial Navy this day.

Actually we still have a few warhorses up our sleeve

All I can say it was the perfect way to end Christmas Day - watching a massive Naval WPO engagement whilst sipping a glass of Armagnac

Not sure whether to be happy with the results or not - will post damage screens - can't sus out how to join them together - Terminus can you help? (or anyone else)

On the last screenshot I posted, the list of sunk Japanese ships is put together from three different parts on the Sunk Ships List. I've cropped the different parts out of the screenshots from the game and pasted them together. If you're using Photoshop, there should be a Crop function (the GIMP has one).
